MBB Game 16 - @ College of Charleston - 1/8/15, 7:30 PM

Post by Jojogunne »

Charleston did not look good losing by 30 on TV to William & Mary. Is this another winnable road game for us?

In short, YES.

Watched that game - CofC has what looks like a somewhat similar makeup in terms of shooting the 3 and not a lot of tremendous production down low (though they have some size) - they seem to really rely on it, and their shooting was not good that game, which put them in a hole early - though HU is also a 3 heavy team, I think HU is much more athletic and versatile in their gameplan with Rokas back, and has some guys that will present matchup problems - another good shot for an HU road W in conf...

would like to see us shoot the three better. If noy C of C is vulnerable to the drive to the basket. Our bigs need to seal off the weakside help and we can run that play all game long.

2 big road games to finish up this long stretch of away games - deceiving ones as there really aren't any 'easy' road games per say - CofC hasn't been shooting well for the most part, hence their record, but they shoot a lot and I'm sure have the ability to get hot at certain points

would def like to see HU shoot better at the start, but really they just need to play their game - HU has so many weapons now, they can really adapt to each game flow - W&M seemed to beat CofC by simply playing smart clean ball - CoC missed a ton of shots, and W&M made them pay by taking good shots and not turning the ball over

An inside presence really opens the flood gates for HU to attack from all over the court, so looking for Rokas and Co. to continue improving and making an impact down low - think they just need to play their style of fast, athletic, aggressive - if they get good looks at the basket, rebound well, and take care of the ball, this can be another strong performance on the road for HU

Hofstra is starting Nichols, Green, Tanksley, Bernardi, and Kone. College of Charleston is starting Donovan Gilmore (forward), Adjehi Baru (forward), Joe Chealey (guard), Anthony Stitt (forward), and Canyon Barry (guard). The players' positions come from http://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=67919&a=1 which has statistics.

Edit: Stitt averages only 3.3 rebounds and ESPN calls him a guard. http://portal.stretchinternet.com/hofst ... Type=video has video.

Edit: Stitt and Baru are seniors, Chealey and Barry are sophomores, and Gilmore is a freshman.

Edit: Hofstra leads 8-4 after over 8 minutes. Only 4 out of 22 field goals have been made for the teams combined. Tanksley has 5 points.

Edit: Hofstra blew a 10-4 lead. College of Charleston tied it and will shoot free throws with Hofstra leading 15-13. With 7:54 left in the first half Gustys and Kone have 2 fouls each. Tanksley has 7 points and nobody else on either team has more than 3 points.

This is not ok. 3rd conference game of horrible shooting. 27% with 7:54 left in the first half is unacceptable.

College of Charleston took their first lead at 18-17 before Bernardi made a three-pointer, but he's made only 1 out of 4 three-pointers so far. Hofstra leads 22-20. Hofstra has made only 6 out of 11 free throws.

Edit: Hofstra leads 28-24 at halftime. Green made a three-pointer off the rim and is tied with Canyon Berry for the game lead with 9 points. Tanksley has scored 8 but made only 3 out of 7 free throws. Kone, Gustys, and Walker have all played but have combined for 2 points in 17 minutes. The teams have only 3 assists each.

Tanksley has got to make free throws. He's left at least three points on the line.

28-24 Dutch at the half.

Somewhat ugly, not a bad game though, very solid defense. C of C has been able to slow the pace down which hurt us early, but I thought we started to play a bit better down the stretch. We just have to push it in the second half, they will get in more foul trouble. Kone and Gustys were sitting with two fouls which hurt us, I think Rokas' presence in the middle will be a huge plus as well.

Halftime seemed to take a long time. The College of Charleston announcers thought it was a media timeout when it was too early for that and it was actually called by College of Charleston. Hofstra took their largest lead of the game at 31-24 when Green made a three-pointer to start the second half. Hofstra leads 34-29.

Edit: College of Charleston went up 39-37 for their biggest lead before Green made his third three-pointer to give Hofstra a 40-39 lead. There's 11:134 left.

Edit: Gustys committed his fourth foul with 7:46 left. Hofstra leads 49-45. Hofstra has made 5 out of 9 three-pointers in the second half. Green has scored 16, Tanksley has scored 14, but Bernardi has scored only 3.

Hofstra wins 71-66. Again a gut it out win. We win again from the foul line. Green took 13 shots and had 26 points. Tanksley 10 shot and 17 points and Nesmith 6 shots and 11 points. All the stats for both teams similar but the free throws C of C 13-17 and Hofstra 24-32. The three guys you want at the end of the game shooting free throws for you Green was 13-14 Nesmith was 2-2 and Bernardi was 3-3. Game set and match.

College of Charleston led by as much as 3 at 55-52. Hofstra tied it at 55 when Bernardi got fouled in the act of shooting a three-pointer and made all three free throws. College of Charleston's last lead was 57-55. Green made two free throws with 3:26 left for the last tie of the game and made a two-pointer with 2:48 left to give Hofstra the lead for good at 59-57. Green had 26 points with half of them from free throws, which he shot 13-14. Green and Kone tied for the team lead with 5 rebounds. Green and Nesmith tied for the team lead with 4 assists. Hofstra made 15 out of 17 free throws in the second half. Both teams made 9 out of 22 three-pointers. Hofstra attempted way more free throws, 32 to 17, despite having only one fewer foul than College of Charleston.

That was a great road win. This is a game we have lost over and over again on the road. We take a 7 point lead late second half, lose that lead, this time we held tough and won the game.

The new "In Guards We Trust" shot extremely well from the stripe tonight. This is another thing that stands out from years past. This is where games are won and lost, and tonight, we really shot well from there.

Very frustrating game, but proud of the way we found a way to win, since in the past this is the type of game we lose.
On another note, William and Mary lost to Elon tonight, and JMU lost to Northeastern, which makes us the only unbeaten team left in the conference.

Great win!!!

Juan'ya! He's getting more and more dominant as the season goes on. Big game for Tanksley, and Nesmith off the bench as well. We got Charleston's best effort, not many Hofstra teams in the past would have gotten that win. The team played nearly mistake free down the stretch to seal the win, great composure.

Obviously we need a better effort from the forwards. Not a big fan of some of the foul calls, but Moussa and Rokas cannot allow themselves to take bad fouls early, we would have lost if not for Green's great play down the stretch.

W&M just lost, which puts alone in first place. Just win baby, we control our own destiny. Elon on Saturday night, I just watched the game, we should run them out of their own gym.

Green's 26 points led all CAA players tonight. Delaware's Kory Holden and Elon's Elijah Bryant scored 25 each, and they're both freshmen. Holden made only 4 out of 20 field goals including 2 out of 16 two-pointers and had 10 turnovers. He had the turnover that let UNC Wilmington tie the game at the end of regulation as they beat Delaware 74-73 in overtime. Bryant had made 6 out of 8 three-pointers and missed all 8 of his two-pointers, so Holden and Bryant combined to make 2 out of 24 two-pointers.

William & Mary missed a shot from at the basket, stepped out of bounds, and knocked a missed free throw rebound attempt out of bounds all in the last 42 seconds as host Elon won 85-79.

Remember when I took heat when I said that making your free throws an important part of winning games. Well when you have a lead late you need to make those points from the line to hold off your opponent.

http://gohofstra.com/news/2015/1/8/MBB_ ... ath=mbball is Hofstra's recap titled "MBB: Green Leads Hofstra To Important Road Victory over Charleston." http://gohofstra.com/boxscore.aspx?path=mbball&id=6420 is the box score. Hofstra had only 3 points off turnovers. Green, Kone, and Gustys had 1 blocked shot each. Hofstra led for 31:33, College of Charleston led for 2:50, and it was tied for 5:36.
