Game 19 vs. Drexel on February 7, 2021 at 2:00 P.M.

Post by EvanJ »

Two area basketball teams have something good in common. We haven't had any postponements or cancelations other than Monmouth who we played later, and Newsday said the Knicks haven't had anybody miss time due to actual or possible COVID.

https://static.caasports.com/custompage ... M#team.ind has Drexel's statistics.

http://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=318623 will have statistics.

http://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=318187 will have statistics for Towson at Charleston at 1:00 P.M.

Both teams have the same starters as yesterday.

Ray is 1 point behind Carlos Rivera for 22nd in career points, and 16 points behind Roberto Gittens. Passing Rivera would make Ray eighth among our players in the CAA behind Jenkins, Wright-Foreman, Agudio, Stokes, Pemberton, Buie, and Adeleke.

Hofstra in yellow today - let's see if that brings HU the same luck it brought Drexel yesterday.

He's also one 3 from passing Rivera for sole possession of 5th-place in 3s (201 entering today).

Stupid turnovers in this game one after another. Ray can’t get into a groove. As I say that he hits a tough three!

37-35, HU at the half.

Biggest leads: 18-13, Drexel; 33-27, Hofstra.

Masic: 10 pts, 4/6 fg (already one short of matching his career-high) - he is smooth out there, makes good decisions; future is bright over the next 4 yrs with he & Cramer.
Cramer, on that note: 8 pts, 4/4 fg
Ray: 3 pts on 1/6 fg after the 30 pts yesterday (as streaky as they come, so maybe a good 2nd half for him?)

Bickerstaff hurting them for a 2nd day in a row (10 pts).

Ray, Coburn & Cramer with 2 PFs each, so they'll all have to watch that early in the 2nd half.

Go figure:

Yesterday, Drexel 22 TOs, Hofstra 11 TOs, but pts off TOs was 20-20.
Today, TOs are 7 each, but pts off TOs are 13-7, HU.

Both teams have a majority of the rebounds from one player, with Kante having 10 of our 18, and Butler having 7 of their 13.
Wynter leads Drexel with 11, and Bickerstaff made 3 field goals and 4 free throws for 10 points without missing.

Uh oh. Kante limps off the court at the 17:37 mark, unable to put weight on his right foot. But he is sitting - did not go to the locker room. So, he may just need to shake it off and could return.

He looks fine. He muscled his way to his 5th offensive board and 12th overall to score and give HU the game's biggest lead, 58-48.

Let's see how they close here with 11:42 left - no more extended scoring lulls (as we've often seen in the past) to let Drexel back in down the stretch.

Nope - 6 straight misses as Drexel scores 10 straight to get within 66-60.

Good collective effort with Ray struggling badly. They relied so much on him yesterday and lost.

Today, he was 1/11, but Masic, Coburn, Cramer, Kante and Burgess (late) all stepped up really well at different times.

It was a gutsy win. Props the Burgess late to hold off Drexel and we made our FTs to keep Drexel from coming all the way back. Kante solid game as many have said a win with Ray struggling in this game. So we are now 8-4 in conference play. Need to shore up our D. Drexe3l still shot about 50% which is not acceptable. This team with long scoring droughts opens the door for team to make comebacks. Coaching staff needs to work on that in practice.

Assist coach said in post game interview that Ray had some kind of stomach ailment...could have explained his play. Other guys stepped up...Masic with 10 points in the first and Kante was a beast with 16 points and 16 rebounds.

Nevertheless we go up by 16 and then the drought and inevitable run by our opponent...however they remained poised down the stretch and closed it out.

Nice win after yesterday's disappointment.

Yeah, Ray was throwing up before the game. But if he's feeling that badly, why is he taking 11 shots or even playing at all?

Nice bounce back win today. They bent but never broke in the 2nd half.

Interesting use of the bench this weekend. Staff plays a little Saturday and then Green plays 14 minutes today. Bethea plays in both games. No Silverio today?

Credit to Masic - very important and productive 22 minutes today.

Burgess had 8 assists, Wynter had 6, and Burgess took the CAA lead 5.474 to 5.467.

Green sat because he was not getting it done in practice. They ironed that out with him and they were pleased with his productive minutes today.

I'm not sure they win today without what Masic did for them in the first half today. i thought that was by far his best stretch as a Hofstra player so far.

Absolutely loving Masic - This kid is gonna be good. Reminds me a bit of Northeastern’s Vasa Pusica with how he plays. This team looks good for years to come assuming players don’t transfer out.
