MBB Game 2 @Iona, Nov. 7 (Fri) 7 PM

Post by Jojogunne »

Like many mid-majors, Iona is a revamped team, with a lot of transfers and even a new coach (Dan Geriot, from the NBA G League). We will be the Gaels' first opponent this season.

FR Ore Odutayo played with Preston Edmeade at Williston Northampton (MA) last year.

ESPN+ and WRHU (HAWC) will provide coverage of the game.

I see the Iona game is on ESPN+, like the UCF one.

Anyone have issues signing in? Do you have to pay extra for it? I have FIOS and the Disney channel, and I think ESPN+ is part of the deal, but I could be wrong. I got blocked at a paywall looking for another $30 a month!

I do not expect ESPN Select (the new name) to be included with any TV provider. If that is all you want (meaning not the Disney bundle), it costs $12.99 per month, or $10.83 per month if you pay for a year. ESPN Select has so many college games. There are nights when I do not have a game I plan to watch, but if I check the scoreboard and see something such as one of our nonconference opponents or a possible upset that is on ESPN Select, I can watch. For $29.99 per month you get ESPN Select, Disney+, Hulu, and no ads. I do not want Disney+ or Hulu. We have nonconference games on ESPN Select every season in multiple sports.

If we win the CAA Men's Soccer Tournament, expect our NCAA Tournament game(s) to be on ESPN Select.

ESPN Select also includes all NHL games, some of the best soccer clubs in the world, Formula One auto racing, NFL PrimeTime, UFC, and other sports.

Thanks EvanJ. That answers my questions. Kind of what I was expecting. The content providers are trying to monetize whatever they can. It seems we will have a few OOC games on ESPN+ over the next month, so paying the $12.99 is worth it. Then I can cancel after that.

I wonder if Hofstra university could set up a viewing party at Hofstra USA for all the away games
A good way to engage the fan base

If you have Hulu plus Disney, you can add ESPN+ for another 10 bucks. Total of $19.99

I like this idea a lot, although for Iona, Columbia, and StonyBrook, they have people traveling with the team to do a pre-game meetup at a local bar/grill type place.

Joe, you should be able to get ESPN+ for free by linking your FIOS account here. No need to pay an additional monthly fee:

ESPN+ and ESPN select are two different things. I have had ESPN+ for many years now and it also incudes various paywalled articled and other information on the website. Its $12.99 per month and hofstra has a bunch id games in this OOC on it.

Wish I could attend tonight, but I’ll be watching on my phone instead. Interested to see how we respond after the UCF game. Once again, cautiously optimistic. Hopefully the bigs stay out of foul trouble agaisnt a smaller, less physical team.

Funny, just about everyone has us as 1.5 to 2.0 point favs except ESPN which has us a 1.5 point dogs and gives us a less than 40 percent chance of winning.

Will be there tonight, looking forward to seeing new guys in person! I'd never consider Iona to be an easy game, but based on how we played Monday and the reported results of the maac scrimmages id be disappointed with a loss tonight

Yes. The ESPN that was linked to just allows you to watch games on ESPN's channels.

https://gohofstra.com/news/2025/11/4/me ... clash.aspx is our preview titled "Pride Visits Iona for Early-Season Clash." We are 23-22 against Iona.

https://s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/side ... 6game2.pdf is our Game Notes.

https://static.ionagaels.com/custompage ... ofstra.pdf is Iona's Game Notes. Iona did not write a preview.

https://ionagaels.com/sidearmstats/mbball/summary will have statistics. Unfortunately Iona does not use StatBroadcast.

Still a 37.1% chance to win but Hofstra -1.5 on ESPN now.

https://defiantlydutch.blogspot.com/202 ... -iona.html is Jerry Beach's "I'll Be Quirky: Iona." Our four foul outs at Central Florida were our most since an overtime win against High Point in the Gulf Coast Showcase championship game on November 22, 2023. It was our most foul outs in a game that did not go overtime since a 77-68 loss at UNCW on February 15, 2006. Loren Stokes, Adrian Uter, Greg Johnson, and Jorge Lebron fouled out. Lebron fouled out in 1 minute because we were fouling at the end and we did not mind if he fouled out. Johnson did not play much that season, but he played 30 minutes because Carlos Rivera played 5 minutes. That was 625 games ago. We played UNCW three times that season with a triple overtime win at home on January 14, and a loss in our first CAA Final on March 6. In Claxton's five seasons, our first game starters had every amount of newcomers from one to five.

Edmead's 16 points were the most by a freshman in his debut since Eli Pemberton scored 20 on November 11, 2016. Justin Wright-Foreman, Desure Buie, Rokys Gustys, Charles Jenkins, Nathaniel Lester, Loren Stokes, and Norman Richardson combined to score 15 points in their debuts. Edmead's 6 assists were the most by a freshman in his debut since Chaz Williams had 6 on November 13, 2009. Edmead's 30 minutes were the most by a freshman in his debut since Jalen Ray played 36 minutes on November 10, 2017. Justin Wright-Foreman, Desure Buie, Rokys Gustys, Charles Jenkins, Nathaniel Lester, Loren Stokes, and Norman Richardson combined to score 15 points in their debut.

Iona has Denver Anglin, whose brother Dallas was one of our thieves in 2012. Obviously they are not close in age.

Iona is our fourth most played nonconference opponent behind Delaware (105), Manhattan (66), and Wagner (53). It will be our 46th game against Iona. James Madison (39), Rider (38), St. Francis (New York) (37), U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (35), Queens (in New York, not the now-Division I team in Charlotte) (32), Bucknell (31), and Lehigh (31) are the rest of the top ten including a tie for tenth.

Iona Coach Dan Geriot was an assistant coach for Cleveland's NBA championship in 2016.

KenPom ranks us 145th, and ranks Iona 238th. KenPom expects us to win 75-73 with a 56 percent chance of winning.
