Getting worked, Elon wants it way more.
Just like we could point to other very valid reasons why they won yesterday but the overriding reason they won, by far, was Ray, tonight there were a number of reasons for the loss, but the primary one was the one above. This is why I was hoping for JMU. Elon has been hungry and confident for the past seven games and tonight simply wanted it more. Some of it is that HU's zone allows for giving up those types of offensive boards off of misses, but a lot of it was just effort and hunger, making sure the defensive rebound is secured. Kante actually pulled down a defensive board like that with force, toward the end, when there was still a chance. And I said, "Finally! But where has that been from him or anyone else all game?" That mainly just wasn't there tonight. Even with that, it was 55-54, but then the 21-4 run to close. Bottom line though, confidence and hunger can snowball quickly and to great degrees in March. It's happened so many times for so many teams. We saw that with Mason and especially VCU with their Final Four runs. It's like catching magic or lightning in a bottle for a certain period of time. For Elon, that started in February and continued tonight. Champions end that kind of Cinderella run though, they don't become the next victim. We'll see what Drexel or Northeastern does tomorrow with the CAA team no one wants to play right now.
