Other than a couple of turnovers Buie has been great. Huge shots for Ray. Tough first half for Pemba. Let's finish

Encouraging that we're up at halftime with Pemba not being a big factor

Considering UNCW went on a 12-0 run early after HU was up 4-0, being up 48-40 at the half isn't bad at all. That's a 16-point swing after trailing 12-4.

- Ray (9 pts) and Bue (12 pts on 4/5 fg) were huge for HU especially with Pemberton struggling (1/7 fg).
- Rok (7 & 7) solid. Just 12 away from Robinson's record.
- Cacok with the 3 PFs and JWF with 2 PFs are something to watch in the second half.
- If not for Talley catching fire with those three 3s late in the half, after missing his first two, to give him a game-high 19 pts, UNCW wouldn't be in it.
- Sabety struggled badly on D filling in for Rok, but he had two emphatic dunks to get HU going when it was still close (around 21-21 before those two slams), and then he had a big offensive board and kick out to Ray for a 3. Those three plays helped HU get some separation.

Gotta guard Talley on the perimeter, go at Cacok and draw that 4th PF as early as possible, and see if they can get Pemberton going. Think they'll be fine.

Four-guard lineup on the floor for HU right now is helping them offensively, but causing some unfavorable size mismatches that UNCW is exploiting at the other end. The lead has shrunk from a dozen to 58-54... but now Cacok gets his 4th with 14:17 left. Huge!!

64-61 lead now for UNCW, defense and rebounding nowhere in sight for Hofstra. Almost halfway through the second half, we have a whopping 2 rebounds... Seahawks are without Cacok, and we have no idea how to capitalize.

30 points now for UNCW's #4, why do we let someone go off every single game?

HU now up to 4 rebounds with 7 minutes left in the 2nd half. Pathetic.

If we could make some free throws, the game wouldn't even be close...

Gustys fouls out doing nothing with UNCW up 4 with 46 seconds left.
What a pathetic second half. No excuse for this team to be embarrassed by a 10 win team that has a first year head coach.

Talley now with 37 points, tying a CAA tournament record set by Marcus Thornton... against Hofstra. Can't even make this stuff up.

No defense. give up 12 more points than the opponents average.

I'm sick of it!

You cannot win games giving up 53 second half points. Once again, first to 90 wins. Very difficult to lose to a 10, now 11 win team. It seems like an opposing player gets the game of his season against HU very often.

Wow.

2 straight years 2 first round exits.

I'm at a loss. Beginning to think HU is just never going to win this. Just can't have anything nice.

Another POY completely wasted. I'm just... I don't even know what to say.

Pathetic - can't win playing ZERO defense - too much "hero ball" at end!
Some weekend for me - Michigan St loses to Michigan, Celtics blow game to Rockets and then this! UGH!

AND 2nd straight year being beat by a first time HC in the first round.

AND allowed another opponent to set the individual scoring record in the tourney after giving Thornton that honor.

I mean something HAS to be done here. Not saying I even know what, but this just can't be accepted or allowed to continue.

Send the staff to a defensive coaching guru, get someone on this damn staff who can actually coach it, hell just do SOMETHING.

What a letdown. I thought they were in pretty good shape, up 48-40 at the half.

I really hate to have to come back to this, but remember when I warned of it on this board in December, when many here were all excited about being on Sports Center with the miracle win at Monmouth then the next two, and they said forget the scores, all that matters is that they won. I said, it's great they won three straight on the road in December, but be wary of HOW they won:

85-84 at Monmouth
88-82 at Rider
84-84 at Stony Brook

I said back then, you CANNOT TRY TO WIN IN MARCH THAT WAY! You have to play at least SOME defense and not just try to outgun everyone.

Then they lost, 90-87, at W&M. I said the same. The excuses were they had the game won but gave it away in the final seconds.
Then they lost 86-85 at home to Charleston. And again, I said the same. The excuses were again that they gave it away late but were right there with the CAA's best.

Well... here we are, after being eliminated in the semis as a 3 seed, the only higher seed that was upset in this year's tourney.

88 points should have won this game. Maybe even comfortably. I picked them to win 84-72 because I thought they finally learned that lesson over the final four regular season games. But they gave up FIFTY-THREE second-half points to an 11-win 6 seed. That's inexcusable.

Talley torches them for 19 in the first half. So key on him in the second half? Nah, let him get 18 more and get to 37 to tie Thornton's record against the same regime. I like Joe, I love this team, but at some point you have to look in the mirror and ask yourself... go back and look at the tape in the second half, when UNCW shot 18/32 (56%) in the second half to end your season when you had a legit chance to go dancing, and ask yourself if what you displayed was anything CLOSE to a championship caliber defensive effort. They didn't deserve this. You just can't outgun everyone on your way to the NCAA tourney. It's doesn't work. Even W&M, who played even less D and tried to outgun teams even more than HU all year, showed up with a pretty decent defensive effort for 40 mins against Towson today... and scoring 8 pts less than what HU did tonight, W&M won easily, by 14. If Shaver and W&M could change their approach in March, you think HU could have?

Frustrating. A real chance at ending the NCAAT drought was there for the taking (and yes, it would've taken and upset over a better NU team and maybe over a better Charleston team but that was still possible), but defensively, they just didn't want it bad enough.

Maybe next year, before they start winning 88-85 in December again, they'll realize the warning signs of that long before March.
