2026 Transfer Portal
Re: 2026 Transfer Portal
Just officially change the logo from March Madness to Money Madness.
Practically all players are nothing more than mercenaries today. The only choices for fans are to boycott that system or accept it.

Re: 2026 Transfer Portal
Its going to be an entirely new team come next year as the mutiny continues. What kind of number if anyone cares to guess did we put in front of Edmeade??

Re: 2026 Transfer Portal
Note that a lot of CAA schools have numerous players in the portal COC,Towson, us, S.B. but not a one yet from either W&M or UNCW!!
Re: 2026 Transfer Portal
The Hofstra exodus is very disappointing. Hard to be a fan. I continue to get season ticket offers with Edmead and Cruz shown. Seems something wrong with that.

W&M lost arguably their 2 best players yesterday, Tunde Vahlberg Fasasi and Reese Miller (as well as 2 more guys already today).triplec2195 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 07, 2026 1:45 pm Note that a lot of CAA schools have numerous players in the portal COC,Towson, us, S.B. but not a one yet from either W&M or UNCW!!
Vast majority of the Uncw roster were seniors. But you're right in that Patrick Wessler is now the glaring exception as far as returning players in the CAA.... unless Cruz decides to stay.
Re: 2026 Transfer Portal
For many of our players the portal is worth a look to see if there is some interest out there. Not sure that leaving means you dislike the program. You want to see if there may be a better situation for you.
For example, now that Edmead may leave, Wills might be more inclined to come back. Would not be surprised if the coaching staff may have some conversations with players in the portal regarding coming back. Famiiarity with the school and the system is still a plus on both player and coaching sides. There are player coach meetings regarding the portal and the staff may encourage the guys to see what is out there and maybe stay in touch in case they reconsider. Finally so many players out there we will field a good team I am sure.

Re: 2026 Transfer Portal
The NCAA has to fix the transfer portal insanity.
Can you imagine what a mess the NFL, MLB, NFL and NHL would be if all players could become free agents every year? That's what college sports has become.
Maybe there should be a limit on how many times a player can transfer? Or how much $$$ any one school can offer? Or perhaps there should be a player draft? Or maybe a "franchise tag"?
The current rules are unsustainable.

Totally agree JoJo. It's ruining college sports on so many levels.Jojogunne wrote: ↑Tue Apr 07, 2026 2:37 pm The NCAA has to fix the transfer portal insanity.

Re: 2026 Transfer Portal
How about the school enter into a contract with the player it offers a scholarship to stay 4 years. Might have some downside if the kid ultimately stinks, the current situation is not working.
Re: 2026 Transfer Portal
A contract is what I was saying here last year. If another school wants to poach a player, the poaching school would have to buy out the rest of the contract. The poached team would still lose the player, but at least that school would get some compensation (instead of nothing) to put toward better replacements.
It still keeps the power schools at a significantly higher level, but it at least would level the playing a little bit more for mid-majors (and perhaps low-majors). And there may even be some instances when mid-majors (or low-majors, though much less so) might keep some good players because the schools looking to poach may not want to buy out the rest of the contract.
Doubtful they'd add it, but some sort of salary cap with a ceiling to limit what poaching schools could spend, and a floor, to force lower-level schools to be more competitive, would be helpful too. Really, they need some sort of CBA that includes all of these (and other) things, but it's doubtful the NCAA would go for that.
p.s. The portal has been open for a little over 16 hours with 1,500 players in it. Almost 100 players an hour, to start.
Re: 2026 Transfer Portal
There's no incentive for either the big schools or recruits who are good enough to eventually transfer to move to a contract system that ties you down for 4 years, and big money donors will find a way around any kind of salary cap.
Long term (or maybe near term) I could see college sports entering into a G league model.
Hofstra makes an agreement with a partner school with a big budget, like St. John's, Syracuse, whatever.
The schools align systems - the big money school staffs Hofstra's assistants, they run the same defense and offense, etc.
The big money school helps fund NIL and sends recruits our way, who get preference to transfer to the big money school after 1-2 years because they already know the system. If we're talking a contract system in this model, that could work where the contract allows them to stay but also move to the partner school if they're good enough.

Former Hofstra players KJ Robinson, Khalil Farmer and Eric Parnell back in the portal.

Re: 2026 Transfer Portal
Correct, it would have to be a forced rule somehow. I wasn't thinking necessarily only 4-year. Was thinking it could be flexible, with 2, 3, or 4-year options and opt-out options (as in the pros) for the third and fourth year, with the biggest goal of getting a player like Edmead to stay for two years (rather than one) before moving on. That's the compromise they need most - flexibility for the player to move on, but for the school (like Hofstra) that does the initial recruiting to at least get that second year before a player like Edmead would move on - and if possible, some form of compensation for the poached school
Partner schools are an interesting idea as long as it's only first preference (as you say) and not big money schools working only with their partner schools. If the latter, it'll be too limiting for the big money schools to want to participate in that model.cactus wrote: ↑Tue Apr 07, 2026 4:33 pm Long term (or maybe near term) I could see college sports entering into a G league model.

Cactus isn't partnering schools a form of collusion

Re: 2026 Transfer Portal
What an absolute gut punch on Edmead - man this one HURTS - barely slept last night lol - this was a kid we really needed to find a way to keep for just 1 more year - absolute program changer.
I'm happy for him, he deserves all he can get, it's just really a sting as he was not only going to be the face of the program, he was going to be the face of the University for all intents and purposes. This had the makings of an all-time team with his return alongside Cruz.
The best case scenario now is that Preston goes to a big time spot and leads the team to a FF next year just like Estrada did. That's a feather in HU's cap that does pay dividends on the recruiting trail. We got a lot of play because of Estrada - Edmead can give us the same. He doesn't want to go far, so that kinda feels like an SJU or UConn deal to me. 'Cuse a bit farther but a national champion program that may be attractive with McNamara. Rutgers or Seton Hall are too 'small' IMO. Who knows.
Hoping Cruz stays and levels up, and that Lopez and this Blake kid are the real deal - I do trust that Speedy and Staff will put together a team that can win. If we can keep developing kids to get paid, we will keep being attractive to guys with uber potential and that can fuel our success. And the good thing is the CAA once again will be decimated and fully winnable if we can figure out our now yearly puzzle pieces. In some ways it will actually be exciting to see who Speedy turns into a star next!
And it may not have mattered here, but HU has GOT to figure out it's corporate money. HU cannot rely on individual donors - Cole is incorrect on that. HU does not have any billionaire tech founders right now that can bankroll at the level needed. We MUST find PE / corp money to get a kid like Edmead to stick for a year. There is ZERO reason HU should not be able to do that - at least they should've been able to give the kid something to think about - I have strong doubts Cole even tried to get real money for him - likely just gave up without a fight, and that just can't be anymore. We have to put up a fight.
Either way, there's not a person around, even the bigs and money people, that don't agree this system is broken and cannot be sustained. Because the reality is even the big programs are struggling. Just like baseball, there are just a few programs that can truly compete at the highest level. Most of the P4 teams are hurting just like the mids are, just at bigger dollar values. I know for a fact that VT can't keep their talent either. Most can't. If you're not a historically top 10 blue blood, you are scrambling every year and spending an absolute fortune to stay afloat.
It can't last. It won't last. But man they need to do something quickly because this is completely destroying college athletics.

Well said, Polito.
Re: 2026 Transfer Portal
I'm interested to see where Edmead lands or maybe even returns - he certainly can't play in the Big 10 - he'll get killed - you know you have to guard someone also - he needs a lot of help in that department. As far as the "human foul machine" Onuetu - he's mid major tops. I thought Roberts could have gotten some more run - maybe he comes back as mentioned before as well as Wills for that matter with the entire backcourt possibly opening up.
