Newsday getting on Board

Post by triplec2195 »

A must read IMO two articles in today's Newsday almost hate using this word. The first article about the school and the successful push to raise money. Susan Poser is quoted often in the article on how important our sports programs are to the school especially basketball. We have seen a spike in our season tickets already for next year. Poser coming from Nebraska U knows a little about the importance of sports on a university.

The second article about Jay wright and his continuing ties to the school how Speedy recruitment was a boon to the program. A lot about school recognition etc. Underneath the article is another about the Alabama player who is now suspended pending an investigation. The placement of this article was no coincidence. So even if you hate the newspaper these articles are well worth reading and somewhere in there is a statement that we expect to retain both Cruz and Preston. FINGERS CROSSED ON THIS!!

Betting line moving more favorably to Hofstra with Alabama’s best three point shooter out.

Only by through, from -14.5 to -11.5. That's still pretty high without their second-leading scorer and their leader in 3-pt. makes and 3-pt. %.

I would take the points, especially since Hofstra is one of only six teams nationally without a double-digit loss this year.

Really good post I didn't see this in my Newsday but this adds fuel to the fire that we need to pay homage to this team. I talked to Cole about it and was assured it was going to happen. That was two years ago maybe we can tie the two Championships together because that team deserves much better recognition then they ever got!

I'm fine with that line, I may be in the minority not sure but I think that's actually a significant drop for a high powered SEC program that has a bit of 'blue blood-ish' cache as of late going up against a mid that hasn't played an NCAAT game in 25 years - a FF and an Elite 8 in a couple of years is no joke. That team has loads of offensive talent and a top tier HC. I'll take a 10-11 point deal, I firmly believe we have a real shot here.

And Newsday... whatever. About friggin time - but frankly, they owe HU coverage, this doesn't negate their nonsense and clear dislike for HU over the many years. Great to see the boost in attention, but they really don't deserve any credit for anything. It's shameful how they've treated HU in the past, even this year, so I'm certainly not fawning over them now. They can still take a hike as far as I'm concerned. HU should charge them to do any interviews, and give it free to everyone else just to teach those tools a lesson (not the writers per say but the organization).

I give Newsday credit for dedicating one of their veteran writers to the Hofstra beat as we edge toward the NCAA tournament.

Tom Rock's coverage has been excellent. Did you see how he explained what caused the Hofstra-St. John's announcement snafu? Plus, as Dr. Poser recognizes, the free publicity has been priceless.

Thanks to the internet, the newspaper business has changed a lot over the last few decades. Many papers have gone out of business and the survivors are consolidating. AI is even writing some routine articles based upon box scores.

So editors have to decide where to devote their shrinking resources. In a market like New York, professional sports dominate, leaving few reporters to cover colleges and high schools.

But good newspapers will find ways to cover events when something big happens. That is called "news."

Our first trip to the NCAA tournament in many years + a coach who starred on the last Hofstra team to play in the NCAAT + the CAA Player of the Year + a homegrown rising star = NEWS! That gives an enterprising journalist many angles to pursue.

So let's welcome Newsday and other media outlets into our world this month. If we can win a tournament game or two, that will make us even more newsworthy next season.

Fair and good points, Jojo. Newsday's coverage was very different throughout the season in past years. But as you said, technology has changed the industry. I'm guessing they would like to send a reporter to every home game as they used to, but can't because of technology's drain on Newsday's resources. So, they are forced to pick and choose what should be covered, and if that means skipping Elon at Hofstra in January and Northeastern at Hofstra in February in favor of waiting to do features at a much bigger time like this, then so be it. And that makes sense in today's climate. Just like programs have to work within NIL constraints now, so too, does the coverage of those programs based on technology restraints as times change.

Does anyone have the full video of the interviews Hofstra did with CBS last Sunday before the selection show? I've seen bits and pieces but not the whole thing.

Wanted to swing back through to give Tom Rock some love, guy has cranked out awesome content on HU, and his articles are very good - we need more of that - but we need it throughout the year - hoping that we can keep our stud Edmead in house and that local story can help drive more consistent local coverage and attention

Of course all media cover big stories, thats obvious - but Newsday isn't national it's local and it should absolutely be doing a MUCH better job covering HU all year long - it's been great the last 2 weeks, but not letting them off the hook just cuz they came in hot and heavy at the last minute - they have plenty of time and money to cover every friggin HS on this island, they can certainly manage to cover this D1 program.

HU and Newsday need to be better partners - keep those great stories coming Tom, we need it and this program fully deserves it!!!
