Speedy should make the team watch the start of Uconn St John's tonight... Hurley got uconn playing with their hair on fire to avenge the loss at MSG.
I expected UConn to win the rematch at home but I was absolutely shocked to see what St. John's scored (only 40 pts!) and shot (just 20%!) after scoring 81 pts in their nine-points win over UConn at MSG.
Shows how important playing intense, focused, committed defense is and how teams can inexplicably turn that on and off. Obviously, different matchups can change things even with a good defensive effort, but sometimes the same effort just isn't there with a lot of teams, and that's inexcusable. I said what I did about coaching in another thread with Coen and Northeastern this year, and that it's mainly about the players, but this is where coaching is a big factor - with accountability. No doubt, Hurley made his players accountable before last night with the way they came out and defended.
Sometimes shots fall, sometimes not, but defensive effort, intensity, communication, and commitment to the defensive gameplan should always remain a constant,
especially when your offense is struggling.
