MBB Game 17 Monmouth, Jan 10 (Sat) 2 PM

Post by Jojogunne »

Monmouth (7-8) is running the gauntlet in CAA play. The Hawks started off by losing to Campbell before vanquishing Towson by 14 points on the road. On Thursday, they will host highly regarded William & Mary before traveling to Hempstead.

Among common OOC opponents, Monmouth has lost to La Salle, Syracuse and Quinnipiac.

Jason Rivera-Torres, a 6-7 transfer who has played at Vanderbilt and San Francisco, leads the Hawks with 15 ppg. He's followed by Stefanos Spartalis and Justin Ray with 11 ppg apiece.

MSG, FloCollege and WRHU (HAWC) will carry the game.

Interesting. The Tribe fall down to 7th. Campbell (3-1) now has that final top-four spot.

This could very well be a tougher game at home then the game on the road yesterday.

Yes, King Rice has the Hawks playing well now. Should be a competitive contest tomorrow. Looking forward to it.

Yeah, you won't just show up and beat Monmouth automatically. They are the type of pesky team that a better team can stumble against if taken for granted, but also the type of team that even if they play their A game, may not have quite enough to win if a better team like Hofstra takes them seriously. I think this could be like Quinnipiac game, competitive, pretty close throughout, but Hofstra "handling business," as Speedy likes to say.

ESPN has Hofstra with an 80.8% chance to win.

UNCW (at Stony Brook) and Charleston (vs. Hampton) both have very winnable games on Saturday, so Hofstra will likely need another win to keep pace.

As I said after watching William and Mary vs Charleston I don't think they are that good. Don't think they are nearly as athletic as we are.
Monmouth beating them at home supports my opinion.

That being said, if Patterson doesn't play that hurts us quite a bit in terms of our rotation.

Maybe Patterson is a better matchup against their leading scorer Rivera-Torres both 6'7 but I have no issues with DeCady playing him man to man. Of course Patterson is more of a scorer the Josh.

https://s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/side ... game17.pdf is our Game Notes.

Monmouth did not write a preview yet.

Here is the rest of the CAA schedule:

William & Mary at Drexel at 2:00 P.M.
https://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=611429
KenPom expects William & Mary to win 78-72 with a 68 percent chance of winning.

Towson at Northeastern at 2:00 P.M.
KenPom expects Towson to win 71-70 with a 50 percent chance of winning.

Hampton at Charleston at 5:00 P.M. on The CW in Charleston
KenPom expects Charleston to win 75-67 with a 76 percent chance of winning.

UNCW at Stony Brook at 6:00 P.M. on SNY
KenPom expects UNCW to win 70-63 with a 74 percent chance of winning.

Campbell at Elon at 7:00 P.M. on WRAL, which is Raleigh's NBC
https://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=611523
KenPom expects Elon to win 85-79 with a 68 percent chance of winning.

The 24 CAA games have not had any blowouts, which is defined by KenPom as at least 20 points. Stony Brook has the two largest margins of defeat, which were at 19 at W&M and at Drexel.

This is the CAA's only period of Thursday through Sunday without any games on CBS Sports Network.

https://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=612058 has statistics.

We are starting Edmead, Davis, Plotnikov, DeCady, and Onuetu.

Monmouth is starting Jason Rivera-Torres (guard, 15.3 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 3.1 assists), Justin Ray (guard, 11.8 points), Jack Collins (guard, 7.9 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 5.4 assists), Cornelius Robinson Jr. (forward, 9.3 points), and Stefanos Spartalis (forward, 11.5 points and 4.6 rebounds). They are 14th of 365 teams with 5.7 blocks.

https://monmouthhawks.com/news/2026/1/9 ... urday.aspx is Monmouth's preview titled "Hawks Hit the Road to Visit Hofstra Saturday."

https://s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/side ... fstra_.pdf is Monmouth's Game Notes.

https://monmouthhawks.com/sports/mens-b ... ts/2025-26 has Monmouth's statistics. They have used 15 players, but only seven meet my definition of a regular, which is 10 minutes per team game. Seven players average under 3 minutes per team game.

https://defiantlydutch.blogspot.com/202 ... owson.html is Jerry Beach's "Keep It Perky: Towson." The 78-67 win was our third unicorn score of the season, meaning the first time that we won by that score.

Been a while since a J. Ray started at The Mack.

Justin Ray, a reserve for Monmouth last year, starts today for the Hawks.

Well can see why Towson didnt score 50 against this team. Whatever happens rest of this mess of a game, Monmouth officially that team we DO NOT wanna see in the early rounds of the CAA tourney.

Missing Biggie too today, lack of that extra 3pt threat really killing our spacing and letting Monmouth clog the paint

I can see Edmead calling his own number and getting a couple or a few buckets in the second half to open things up for Cruz.

Gonna say Hofstra turns it around, 37-30, in the second half, to squeak by, 61-59.

Need an 11-7 Hofstra finish over the final 6:17 for this to happen. Possible. Need some stops and probably Davis/Edmead to come up big late.

Monmouth is as pesky as we thought they'd be.

Speedy with a really questionable sub putting Victory back in for Sunday who had been playing great with around 2 to play. Victory then gives up the and 1 putback to tie it. And then Speedy keeps a million time outs in his back pocket. Could have gotten German back in the game only arguably our clutchest shooter. Make it make sense?!
