dutchPride86 wrote: Mon Dec 22, 2025 10:14 pm So with conference play about to start, figured it was a good time to post my too long semi deep dive as to how I see the conference stacking up so far that none of you asked for. Lol. Anyway...

The Favorite:
-UNCW: Underwhelming non conf schedule makes them a little hard to judge. But still have best coach and home court advantage in conference. And one of deepest rosters (even with a couple of the CAA transfers not having even played yet). If CJ Luster (remember him from Stony?!) ever plays for them watch out

The Contenders:
-Towson: Tyler Tejada and Dylan Williamson are still there and really good. But do they have enough offense to supplement them? Dropped them from co-favorite for that reason
- Hofstra: We 100% should be in the mix for a top 4 seed at worst off what we've seen to date
- Charleston: Crushed by injuries. But reportedly going to get Colby Duggan back eventually (remember him from Campbell?!), which should make a big difference
- William & Mary: No stars cause no one plays big minutes. But deep and good. Seems like they made the right hire at head coach last year

One of those 5 teams should win the conference imo.

Wild card:
Elon - Beat Richmond, took VA Tech to OT, climbing up the rankings. They could be in the mix.

Middle of the Pack (all these teams could easily beat you if not careful):
Stony, Monmouth, Hampton, Campbell, Northeastern

Fighting to avoid the Friday game:
Drexel (did NIL destroy them? Doesnt seem to be their year). NC A&T

As for individual players, this would be my First Team:
Cruz Davis (should be POY favorite)
Tyler Tejada (Self explanatory)
Nolan Hodge (made the leap for Uncw averaging nearly 16ppg),
Chandler Cuthrell (Elon. Averaging 21pts 7reb as transfer after only averaging 7ppg off the bench at Purdue Fort Wayne last yr)
Erik Pratt (Stony. Averaging 18ppg, 4reb and nearly 3 ast. Nice find for them from Milwaukee)

Other players to watch:
Dylan Williamson (Towson)
Jlynn Counter (Charleston)
Jason Rivera Torres (Monmouth)
Dj Smith and Dovydas Butka (Campbell)
Lewis Walker (NC A&T. Might be Edmeads biggest comp for rookie of the year)
Agree on basically all of this - very good assessment based on what we've seen so far, in terms of how you classified which teams are in which bucket (including the potential mine fields among non-top tier teams, which always pop up in CAA play), the top players to watch, and the wild-cards of the good players who've been out for UNCW and Charleston, which could ultimately make all the difference in the race for the top.

Bottom line, it will not be easy for Hofstra (it never is) BUT I don't see this as a year in which there is anyone else to necessarily be wary of, a top team or two that HU can't quite reach (as in some past years). If Hofstra plays its game, continues to define its roles, and keep growing and improving, they should have a great shot to finish first and to win the CAA tournament. It'll be an interesting and hopeful year for HU in CAA play. And, as I say every year, one-third into CAA play - we'll have a decent idea where the season can be headed after the first six CAA games. Among that stretch, a huge bellwether test at Towson in the third CAA game. And later on, two other key stretches: two games to end the first half of CAA play (at W&M, vs. Charleston) and a huge three-game stretch in CAA games 12-14 (vs. Towson, at Charleston, at UNCW) should obviously reveal a lot and have a big say in seeding.

We moved up to #19 in the mid major poll while UNCW dropped to #16. https://collegeinsider.com/mens-mid-major-top-25

UNCW's loss hosting Howard is much worse than our worst loss. Our worst loss in KenPom was at Number 171 Iona, and UNCW only played two games against higher ranked teams. KenPom has them with the tenth easiest schedule of 365 teams. If their opponents stay where they are, only two of their first nineteen games (including six CAA games) will be against the top half. Then they play six of seven games against the top half. KenPom has our schedule being like every game being against Number 126, and UNCW's schedule as being like every game against Number 272. Bethune-Cookman has the hardest schedule, which is like every game against Number 58, and Fordham has the easiest schedule, which is like every game against Number 327.

So two EARLY things of note from first day of CAA play...

- Colby Duggan reportedly returning for Charleston tonight. Could dramatically change their outlook

- W&M is blowing the doors off Towson early in the 2nd half. Been watching this game... W&M super well coached on offense. Their lack of a star almost makes them more dangerous, good cuts and ball movement and shot can come from anyone and anywhere.

Towson on the other hand... either Tejada drives into traffic or Williamson hoists a deep contested 3. They have no offense to speak of. Not sure what happened to them. Maybe they had no $ left to fill out the roster after retaining Tejada and Williamson, but they look to be lacking talent

W&M won 84-70.

Duggan scored 10.

The CAA statistics at https://s3.amazonaws.com/sidearm.sites/ ... _Stats.pdf added a section for career leaders among active players. Of the top fifteen scorers, only four played in the CAA before this season. Davis is second this season, and sixth in career points per games among active players. Davis is first and Edmead is second in career assists per game among active players. There is no required total amount of games to qualify, but just like statistics within one season, players must have played in at least 75 percent of their team's games.

Just out of curiosity I checked a few March Madness "bracketology" sites. Although most had W&M as a 12 or 13 seed, teamrankings.com had Hofstra (predicted record of 22-9) as a 13 seed. Only one site had Towson and one had UNCW.

Very early, but interesting none the less.

I hate to get ahead of ourselves and look into the crystal ball. Lets wait until we beat a couple of the so called "powers that be" in this conference! But it's good that people are taking notice of this team hopefully no letdowns.

On CBS Sports Network, W&M won 76-57 hosting Stony Brook, while the other four games that are over or in progress are close.

W&M's Tunde Vahlberg Fasasi led all players with 22 points. He shot 8-10, and had 7 rebounds. Stony Brook's Rob Brown III made his fifth three with 4:00 left in the first half, and he had not missed a three or attempted a two by then. He did not score in the last 24 minutes. Stony Brook shot threes 9-38, including 4-28 by players other than Brown.

Charleston went up 14 with 11:32 left. Host Elon tried to come back, and Charleston won 85-81. Elon's Bryson Cokley entered at the first media timeout, played 32 minutes, and led all players with 23 points. Chandler Cuthrell scored 17, which was exactly how many he needed to remain above Davis to lead the CAA in scoring. Martin Kalu led Charleston with 19. Jlynn Counter had 16 points, 9 rebounds, and 9 assists. He became the first player this season to have at least 16 points, make at least 10 free throws, have at least 9 rebounds, and have at least 9 assists. He became the first CAA player to do that since Northeastern's T.J. Williams on February 23, 2017. Chol Machot became the first player to have at least 15 points, at least 15 rebounds, and at least 7 blocks since Akron's Enrique Freeman on March 15, 2024, and the first CAA player to do that from 2010-2011 to now.

Campbell's coach got his first CAA win, as they came back from down 57-50 to win 68-65 at Monmouth. Campbell had five players play at least 36 minutes, and their only other player played 11 minutes. Their lack of players reminds me of NC A&T last season, and that could hurt them when they play on Saturdays with one day of rest after playing on Thursday. Campbell's D.J. Smith led all players with 24 points. Campell's Dovydas Butka had 14 points and 14 rebounds. I wonder when the previous time two CAA players had at least 14 points and at least 14 rebounds on the same day was.

Northeastern leads 65-59 at NC A&T with 8:03 left.

Towson at Hampton is tied at 58 with 2:36 left.

Edit: Hampton's Jalyke Gaines-Wyatt had the game-winning three-point play with 28 seconds left, as they won 63-62 hosting Towson. Towson missed, but kept the ball because Hampton touched it while out of bounds. Towson's final shot was when Tyler Tejada's miss went from the rim to on top of the backboard. Tejada led all scorers with 16 points, but he shot field goals 3-13, and Dylan Williamson shot field goals 4-15. Gaines-Wyatt led Hampton with 15 points. Northeastern did not have anybody with more than 4 rebounds.

Northeastern pulled away to win 85-74 at NC A&T. Northeastern's William Kermoury and Xavier Abreu scored 22. Kermoury shot threes 6-8.

UNCW won 65-53 hosting Drexel. At the end, announcer Mike Vaccaro, who is nicknamed "the voice of the Seahawks," said that it was UNCW's fewest points, and the first time they got outrebounded. Drexel had 39 rebounds, and UNCW had 36. UNCW's Nolan Hodge led all players with 17 points, and teammate Noah Ross had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Garfield Turner led Drexel with 13 points. Drexel shot field goals 18-55, which is .327.

The standings are:

UNCW, William & Mary, Charleston, and Hampton: 2-0
Hofstra: 1-0
Elon, Campbell, and Northeastern: 1-1
Monmouth: 0-1
North Carolina A&T, Stony Brook, Towson, and Drexel: 0-2

Saturday:
Northeastern at Campbell at 12:00 P.M. on CBS Sports Network
Hofstra at Drexel at 2:00 P.M. on MSG2
North Carolina A&T at Stony Brook at 4:00 P.M. on SNY
Monmouth at Towson at 6:00 P.M. on Monumental Sports Network
Hampton at UNCW at 7:00 P.M.
If you have a way of getting regional sports networks from different markets, you can watch a quadrupleheader without Flo.

Monday:
William & Mary at Charleston at 7:00 P.M. on CBS Sports Network

After January 31, Towson will have played 11 CAA games, and UNCW will have played 9. I wonder when the last time two CAA teams were more than one game apart in CAA games played, especially if you ignore games in 2020-2021 canceled because of COVID.

EvanJ - Where you is the Hofstra at Drexel game on MSG2? Is that just Philadelphia area or something? I am not seeing it on the tv listings for Long Island.

The CAA master schedule shows the Hofstra-Drexel game on MSG2, but my cable provider (Optimum) does not:

This will be a critical week for us with two games on the road and one at home...Towson appears to be reeling so we need to take advantage of that and win the game in Baltimore...the other two, Drexel in Philadelphia, and Monmouth at home should be wins.

Would love to see us at 4-0 in CAA play after this week

Time to make Jaeden Roberts a starter. Kid is special. Would be a three-headed monster along with Davis and Edmead. Plotnikov off the bench and in at the end of a close game.

That would hurt us defensively as we'd be one of the smallest starting fives in the CAA. Roberts is perfect as a 6th or 7th man. Comes in hits some threes and give us a bolt of energy off the bench...he is fine where he is.

I really like what I see from Roberts who wouldn't scoring almost 7 a game playing 9+ minutes but German is a seasoned veteran who helps the team in so many ways and provides leadership. German more of a small forward Roberts a guard. It ain't broke so why try to fix it. It's working very smoothly the way that it is and Roberts will get minutes if either Cruz or Edmeade run into foul trouble. Robert's time is coming.

This league is very open this year - it's there for the taking, and I think this HU squad has the goods to do it - not saying it will be easy, there will be a couple of fighters, the W likely being the biggest, CofC if they get healthy, and a Towson / W&M / whoever. But this HU group is becoming one of the better we've had here - they can absolutely win the CAA and go dancing, I can see it - they gotta fulfill on that potential though... lot of ball between now and then. HU just needs to focus on being the best it can, and let the rest fall where they may.

And I agree on German, he's where he needs to be right now and so is Roberts - GP is playing in his correct position, and providing important stability - Roberts is a huge boost for this team off the bench, and can still play plenty of minutes - both seem to be thriving, no need to rock the boat! Keep this train moving and keep improving!

I was using the CAA's schedule.

NBC recently revived the national channel NBCSN. The Philadelphia channel is NBC Sports Philadelphia, so the acronym is NBCSP.

Charleston beat W&M last night 88-79 moving us into 2nd place behind UNCW. Duggan had 17 points. I know it's early but we have to be happy being picked 10th pre-season!
