Re: Cruz Davis
His 7.9 field goals made per game are tied for fourth in Division I, and tied for the most outside the power conferences.
Re: Cruz Davis
Cruz wins second consecutive CAA player of the week honors...Well deserved!

Re: Cruz Davis
Early last year, I was sitting down with with Frank Aligah
For those that don't know he was a point guard for St. John's during the Bob Shaffer era
He's very close with Rick Pittino
He told me we had a real good one in Cruz Davis
He said watch out once he gets comfortable in his role. You'll see a lot of good things out of him.
He said just be patient
He was right

Sp but you get it
One thing that Frank knows it's about guards he was the point guard on that St. John's team
I see him once every two months as he works with seniors in Nassau County

Re: Cruz Davis
Cruz just picked up his second straight Met Basketball Player of the Week as well. Apparently it's the first time the same Hofstra player has won that back to back weeks since Agudio in Dec 2007!
Well deserved recognition for Cruz. He's been absolutely terrific.

https://gohofstra.com/news/2025/12/19/m ... -list.aspx is titled "Davis Named To Lou Henson Award Watch List." Today's game will have two of the fifty players, as Quinnipiac's Amarri Monroe made it. Elon's Chandler Cuthrell, UNCW's Nolan Hodge, and Towson's Tyler Tejada were the other CAA players. The only CAA player to win it since it was created in 2010 is W&M's Nathan Knight in 2020. Knight scored 401 points in 837 minutes in 108 NBA games.
Re: Cruz Davis
Kid is becoming a heckuva player - he's literally unstoppable often in games. He does tend to disappear, which he needs to mature through and display more consistency, but man when the game is on the line he's the guy you want in control. And he seems ready and willing to fill that role. Very fun player to watch. He can take us far if he continues to grow into a true team leader.
Re: Cruz Davis
I give Pecora some creadit for Cruz' "disappearance" late in the first half and into the second half. Quinnipiacswitched to a 1-3-1 zone to slow our guards down. Cruz then tried to get Victory the balld down low with poor results...the kid needs to learn to keep the ball high, not bring down where everyone was swiping at it.
Hofstra then changed strategy, letting Cruz and Edmead, who had a great second half do their thing.

Davis is one of only five players named Mid-Major All-Americans by the Field of 68 (On3 Media):

Re: Cruz Davis
ESPN wrote their preseason and current player of the year predictions for each conference. They switched from Tyler Tejada at preseason to Davis now.
Re: Cruz Davis
Another major honor for Davis, who is having one of the best seasons of any Hofstra guard I have seen -- including Speedy!

Re: Cruz Davis
Davis is having one of the best seasons. Charles Jenkins as a senior in 2010-2011 was better, but it is close enough that Davis could finish better. One thing I sometimes calculate is how many points Player A would have if he had the same two-point, three-point, and free throw percentages with the amount of attempts of each shot that Player B had, and compare that to Player B's points. Player B is Jenkins, who scored 746. Player A is Davis, who would have scored 722 with that combination of attempts. Justin Wright-Foreman could also be close, but he did not have as many assists as Jenkins or Davis.
Re: Cruz Davis
He moved up to ninth in Division I with 21.9 points per game, and he passed Elon's Chandler Cuthrell for the CAA lead. He's also second in the CAA and 67th in Division I with 5.1 assists.
Re: Cruz Davis
Yeah this is a fun discussion-- which of our guards had the best single season for us and how's Cruz tracking toward it?
I think JWF might get overlooked from time to time... his senior year he averaged 27/3/4 on 51/43/87 shooting percentages.
From his HU bio that year:
2018-19: CAA Player of the Year...All-CAA First Team...CAA Championship All-Tournament Team...USBWA District II Player of the Year...Selected for CAA team at the 2019 Dos Equis 3X3U National Championship and named MVP after Team Colonial captured the title...Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American...Eastern College Athletic Conference Player of the Year...All-ECAC First Team...Senior CLASS Award Second-Team All-American...Earned most-ever MBWA weekly awards in one season for a Division I player...Earned most career MBWA weekly awards across all divisions...Seven CAA Player of the Week Awards are believed to be the most in a single season in CAA history (since 1985-86)
Speedy's senior year is up there, along with Charles, Agudio, and Stokes all also in the conversation for the past 30 years or so.
I've been watching since '95, so I'll defer to others on this board as far as how guys like Laurel, Thieben and Nisenson stack up.

Re: Cruz Davis
Desure Buie's senior year should also be in the conversation.
Conference regular season and tournement championship, NCAA berth, 7th in CAA in scoring, 2nd in minutes, led league in steals, assists, and 3 point %.

Re: Cruz Davis
I found this clip on YouTube called "Cruz Davis 2015 King James Shooting Stars Classic," but I don't know if this is OUR Cruz Davis.
The team is the U11 Gulf Coast Shooting Stars. They're based in Houston; our Cruz is from the Dallas area.
What do you think? The kid is a sparkplug.

Re: Cruz Davis
Also probably should have been the POTY his last year but lost to Nathan Knight of W&M.
Re: Cruz Davis
There is no doubt that that 11 year old is Cruz Davis.
What an awesome young talent he was. Open the link and enjoy!
