2018-2019 Out Of Conference Opponents

Post by EvanJ »

I don't know how often I will update this. What made me start this topic is that Cal State Fullerton is 2.5 point favorites hosting Loyola Marymount. Loyola Marymount started 7-0 (6-0 vs. Division I) before getting their first loss at UCLA. Loyola Marymount is 19th in the RPI, 50th in the NET, and the only team to beat 7-1 Georgetown. Here are our out of conference opponents, with the records excluding games against us and non-Division I teams:

Mount St. Mary's: 0-6
Marshall: 4-2
North Carolina A&T: 2-5
Maryland: 6-1
Cal State Fullerton: 1-4 (their only win was against Monmouth)
Virginia Commonwealth: 5-2
Siena: 3-4
Kennesaw State: 0-7
Monmouth: 0-9
Rider: 2-2 (an usually low amount of games, and they haven't played any non-Division I teams)
Manhattan: 2-5
Stony Brook: 6-1
Total: 31-48 (.392)

Seems like the more we win the lower we are ranked. Our SOS seems to be weakening by the day. Granted we have played some good teams (VCU, Maryland, Marshall), but I don't think anyone anticipated how poorly some of our other opponents would play this season.

The combined record of Kennesaw, MSM, Monmouth, Manhattan, Cal St, and Sienna is 6 wins and 44 losses (with three of these teams yet to win a game). WOW!

We fell from 123rd to 152nd in the NET on Wednesday, and it hasn't updated through yesterday. We're 202nd in the RPI with an SOS 327th of 353. We could go 12-6 in the CAA and finish outside the Top 150. The Sagarin likes us better than other rankings in 137th.

In the Sagarin, our SOS is 5.77 points easier than the median. There's no way to know the mean without entering 353 numbers myself, but the mean and median should be close.

So true Cards, and frustrating!

Oh well, have to play who's on the schedule, and it looked pretty good on paper before the start, so won't complain now. The 3 good ones to me are pretty good ones, too bad HU couldn't take down 1, but this team proved it belonged with them. I'm seeing progression, and that is huge.

Those other teams are having a brutal year, my goodness.

Alas, just keep progressing and keep winning.

Our OOC opponents went 2-4 against Division I yesterday excluding Rider's loss to us. Stony Brook got their second loss 71-69 at Brown. Marshall lost 75-74 hosting Toledo on a winning shot with 3 seconds left in overtime. Mount St. Mary's remained winless. North Carolina A&T got a non-Division I win. Maryland beat Loyola (Chicago). Siena won 74-71 at Robert Morris. Monmouth lost 82-63 at Albany, who entered with one Division I win.

Kennesaw State fell to 0-9 vs. Division I by blowing a lead at Gardner-Webb. KSU was up 12 with 12 minutes left. They went down, and made a three to go up 69-68. After Gardner-Webb missed, KSU missed a layup. KSU got the offensive rebound with 28 seconds left, so Gardner-Webb had to foul. KSU made the first of two free throws. Gardner-Webb made a layup with 14 seconds left to tie it at 70 when they could have held for the final shot. KSU missed a three at the buzzer, and starting with the first score in overtime Gardner-Webb led the rest of the game.

Marshall won 75-74 at Akron. With a chance to expand their lead, Marshall missed. Akron could have held for the last shot, but they didn't. They missed with 4 seconds left, got an offensive rebound, missed again, and the ball was knocked out of bounds with 1.1 seconds left. Replay changed it from Marshall's ball to Akron's ball. At the buzzer, Akron missed a three that came down on top of the backboard. It was important that Marshall didn't miss a free throw, albeit with only 9 attempts.

Yesterday UNCW lost 93-50 and Charleston won 83-79. Today Delaware lost 74-68 at Stony Brook, Elon lost 92-91 host Canisius, William & Mary beat non-Division I William Peace 106-89, Drexel beat Quinnipiac 92-83 at a neutral site, and Northeastern lost 75-70 at Vermont. Drexel came back from down 16. Elon went from up 12 to down 11. They made their last 10 field goals, with four of them threes, including a three at the buzzer to come up 1 point short. With 4.9 seconds left and Elon down 3, Canisius fouled so Elon couldn't attempt a three. Elon made then intentionally missed and did not get near the offensive rebound. Canisiu made 2 free throws to go up 4. Maybe if Elon had made the second free throw they would have won in overtime. The CAA went 2-4 vs. Division I this weekend.

The CAA had 16 games through Saturday, with us playing the only non-Division I game. Then all teams have 5 or 6 days off before their first CAA game on Friday December 28 (Charleston at UNC Wilmington is their first game on December 9). On Wednesday January 9, Towson hosts Cornell. That's possible because teams get Thursday off on the weeks they play their travel partners.

Of note CAA teams playing last night UCONN blew out Drexel 97-65, COC 83 SIENA 58 and Elon beating Kennesaw State 80-67. Elon is now 4-8 and KS is 2-10. These games going pretty much as expected and to reiterate what everyone else is saying COC is going to be our main competition in trying to win this conference not that we are going to roll over everyone else. IDK that we have an answer for Brantley who last night only played 20 minutes had 23 points on 8 for 8 shooting hitting 5 of 5 three's. He also chipped in with 5 rebounds and 3 assists. He's going to be a real handful for us but maybe we can somehow get Kante in the game wearing Radovic's uniform. A nice thought right, lol.

Don't sleep on Northeastern. They'll get healthy for CAA play and be a force.

Akwasi Yeboah, who was averaging 20.0 points and 7.3 rebounds, had no points and 1 rebound. He may have gotten injured, which is bad for our schedule. Stony Brook won 76-73 at Quinnipiac. Stony Brook tied New Jersey Institute of Technology for the most away wins with 6. Both are 6-1 away.

Edit: http://sevenovertimes.com/playerrankings.php says that by win probability added, Yeboah is the best player in the country!

Manhattan lost to St. Francis (BKN). Rider had a shot blocked with 3 seconds left and missed at the buzzer to lose 81-80 in a tournament against Cal State Northridge, who was 3-8 before the game.
