MBB Game 18 - @ Northeastern - 1/14/15, 7 PM

Post by EvanJ »

This is a matchup of two of the top three teams in Division I away wins. Hofstra leads with 7, while Northeastern and Eastern Kentucky are tied for second with 6. An away win would be a big step towards a regular season title.

If we play like we did against Elon and hit say 30% of our threes we should be ok...Agree that I would like to see our bigs at least slow down theirs...Our guards should then be able to put us over the top

Definently going to be an interesting game. The first decent team we are playing that has a big man has their top scorer and best player. Rokas will need to step up if we are gonna win this game. Maybe even play Rokas and kone at the same time which hasn't happened much if at all.

Need to double Etherton in the post and make him give up the ball. Also want to see us pressure their guards Kone and Gustys playing together might work for short periods.

NBCSN only lists the game in Hempstead as being on the network. http://nbcsportsgrouppressbox.com/2014/ ... -schedule/

The first half of the game at Elon was an exception, but the CAA now lets you watch any game online for free if it isn't on TV.

The Sagarin and its components (four values) predict Northeastern by 0.69, Hofstra by 0.70, Hofstra by 1.93, and Northeastern by 4.92. TeamRankings predicts Northeastern to win by 1.6 and numberFire predicts Hofstra to win by 1.1.

If Hofstra loses there will be a three-way tie for first in the CAA at 4-1 between Hofstra, Northeastern, and the winner of UNC Wilmington at William & Mary.

Sagarin "Predictor" rating (after HCV) - which you'd use for financial investments has HU by 2.03 - lot of value with "short" (HU) if you are staunch believer in his ratings.

Northeastern's video at http://portal.stretchinternet.com/hofst ... Type=video starts and stops so I'm going to listen to the game without video. http://stats.statbroadcast.com/statmonitr/?id=68005 has statistics. Both teams used their normal starters, and Northeastern has started the same players every game. Northeastern started David Walker (guard), T.J. Williams (guard), Zach Stahl (forward), Scott Eatherton (forward), and Quincy Ford (forward). Both teams have led and Northeastern now leads 13-12.

Edit: Hofstra came back from down 5 to tie the game at 20 with 11:31 left in the first half. Northeastern has made two-thirds of their field goals. The teams are on pace to score 94 points. Tanksley has 8 points. Hofstra has made three three-pointers.

Edit: With 10:43 left in the first half, Northeastern has 2 fouls and Hofstra has 6 fouls. Brian Bernardi is bleeding.

Edit: With 7:26 left in the first half it's tied at 27. Northeastern has 7 blocked shots, putting them on pace for 22!

Edit: The under 4 minutes media timeout happened with 4.7 seconds left. Hofstra's largest lead was 4 and Northeastern's largest lead was 5. Green leads Hofstra with 11 points and has made three three-pointers. Eatherton made a layup at the buzzer to tie the game at 43 at halftime and give him 12 points. Northeastern has made a whopping two-thirds of their field goals. Eatherton, T.J. Williams (10 points), and Zach Stahl (8 points) have combined for 30 points. They have missed one shot each and made 13 out of 16 (.813) combined. Williams has 5 assists. Green leads all players with 6 assists but nobody else on Hofstra has an assist. Tanksley and Bernardi have 8 points each and Kone has 7 points. Northeastern has only 1 offensive rebound. There have been 8 lead changes and 7 ties. Hofstra has made 6 out of 10 three-pointers to raise their season percentage to .401. Robinson and Tanksley surprisingly lead Hofstra with 4 rebounds each. Williams has 6 rebounds and is on pace for a triple-double.

That was a great first half. Tied at 43. Just what you would want to see from the first-place team and the preseason league favorite.

Considering we gave up 66.7% shooting, while shooting 42.9% ourselves, I'll take the tie. But we better D up in the second half.

One of the most surprising stats is that we did not allow Scott Eatherton to get a single rebound in the first half.

Also of note, UNCW is up 44-24 at William and Mary at the half.

Northeastern's announcer's have noted how bad Juan'ya Green's defense is more than once...

Huskies STILL shooting at 67.6% at the under-12 timeout in the second half. They also have 11 more FTA (6 more FTM) than us and 9 of the game's 11 blocks, and we're only down 66-63, on the road, against the CAA preseason favorite. Would not have thought that possible before the game with those types of numbers against us. But we still have a good shot.

Northeastern's shooting so well because if they miss a shot, it's a foul. These refs should get pink-slips as they're walking off the court tonight, they have completely ruined this game against two evenly matched teams, jerks.

If we're not going to play any defense, we need to at least stop fouling, but the refs are too whistle happy for that. A game that favors our pace like this, there's no excuse to be down double digits.
