119th Congress (2025-2026): Protect College Sports Act of 2026

My thoughts -
Think it's too tilted to the bigger schools. Permanently locks mids and smaller teams into a second tier.
There are some positives like limiting transfers and trying to reign in the current madness by creating a salary cap but I’m not sure federal legislation is the right answer. It swings the power back to the NCAA too much - and gives them an antitrust exemption so if they want to make rules to the benefit of the bigger schools, which is all they've ever cared about in the past, there's no pathway to challenge it.
Not sure of the right approach - employee classification/collective bargaining brings its own set of problems - but to me this isn't it.

It is fat from perfect but something has to be done and fact that this is a bipartisan bill and the transfer limit rule alone is enough to get me on board with hoping it passes.

Yeah, and unfortunately mid majors will never have the power here - we have to take whatever is set forth, and simply hope it's not a total sham lol
And interestingly enough, per the latest Blue & Gold Weekly, HU sent a student rep in full support of it, so I guess HU is onboard.
It's at least some level of bi-partisan, and it at least offers some help to womens and olympic sports, and puts a cap on this sleezy agents taking advantage of everyone - major college programs will always be able to outspend mids, that's always been and always will be.
Agree not perfect, but it's better than nothing. And for once, the NCAA has actually been trying to reign things in but they keep getting overruled by local courts - it's insanity, this had no choice but to go federal, it's the only way to help at this point. It's not the be-all answer, but again, gotta start somewhere because this madness just can't continue.

Anything to end this chaos in college sports is a good thing in my opinion.

He was re-elected in 2024, so he does not have to run until 2030. How many teams will have changed conferences by then?

Ha, that's a good question - the ACC and Big 12 are likely the most ripe for change around then IMO - I believe the ACC's exit ability shifts at that time - but who the heck knows, that feels like an eternity with how fast things are changing and how much will be different then.

Passed the Senate, but questions about whether it will pass the House before mid-terms - don't think so as I'm not sure they're even in session...?

The House is out of session until Monday after Election Day. In the likely event that Democrats take the House and maybe Senate, I am assuming that Republicans will want to do as much as they can at the end of the year. If the House passes it, the next step is Trump. It got over two-thirds of senators, so it is possible that Congress could override Trump's veto if Trump vetoes it, but there could be Republicans who vote for it but will not vote to override his veto. The process of writing bills, having them discussed in a committee, and then the full chamber can be slow. Even if the House was in session now, I do not know if it could change anything this school year. If it does become law by December, I wonder if it will make any athletes transfer after the fall semester who otherwise would have stayed.
