We now have our roster posted on gohofstra for the upcoming year. It shows 14 players so I guess someone is either a redshirt or a walk on. Emma, Gooden, Carter, Fargo and Swint all return. Do or die for Danielle this year you have to figure.

I watched a half of this game since I was already at the Mack for the men's game. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised as we now have a real PG in transfer(JMU) Chloe Sterling who can score 18 POINTS 6 REBOUNDS and 3 assists. We also have a bona fide find in freshman LaNae Corbett from Maryland who played like she was possessed all over the court 15 points 13 rebounds. Emma playing 24 minutes had 7 points. We had a 10 point lead in the 4th quarter of this game only to succumb to their full court press and turn the ball over at the most critical time of the game. We lose a heartbreaker to Sacred Heart 63-58. Game was closer then the score indicates as we had to foul at the end. A tough loss I'll credit to the coaching staff for not practicing breaking the full court press enough. This will be a better year this year.

I didn't make it to the game until a few minutes left in the 2nd quarter. Definitely some bright spots, but unfortunately the game ends the way many have before in the past few seasons with the team looking lost on how to break the press. Sending three up and only trying to break it with tow players wasn't working at all but they continued to do it giving away the lead and ultimately the game. A shame to see them squander a nice run in the 4th to go up 8.
As you mentioned tc, great games by both Sterling and Corbett. Sterling may be the best PG they've had in years. Very quick and good vision. Can create and score. Corbett looked great and was all over the place. Mostly quiet games from our returners. Also liked the energy brought from Larsson and Keita.
Agree this looks like a stronger team and am optimistic about this season.

Thanks for having some vision here Pride this could be an interesting year. I don't want to be disrespectful but still don't get the start for Fargo. Just don't see her making a lot of contributions??

oh. - i didn't realize she started. Maybe for some program stability on what was expected? She wasn't in a lot down the stretch.
Looked like the stretch run (which i assume is generally the most trusted un less someone gets hot) was Sterling, Von Essen, Swint, Corbett and Larssen/Keita (with some minutes for Gooden and Carter). I do wonder if Von Essen and Sterling will split the 2 (or play small at the 2 and 3) and Carter/Gooden more of the setup PGs.
I feel like this years team may have more options/flexibility this season. 4 players didn't play including our other 6'3" Freshman Hodge. Not sure if there would be a plan for a larger rotation as they go forward

A lot more "quality" DEPTH for sure but as far as PG is concerned that's Sterling number one and no one is even close from what I saw. Rick Cole even said to me before the game started we have a really talented PG now. I wasn't disappointed as I watched her put the D to sleep then go right right past them to the basket. She made some tough shots and also was able to break the press on more then one occasion by herself. I don't think she's a great 3 point threat but she made tough shots in the paint.
Corbett super impressive as well and harassed one of their high scorers Amelia Wood a lot of the game. She was in her face and just being really physical. Wood shot 0-9 and had 4 points all from the FT line. This kid Corbet looks like a real find. Coach talked her up and it wasn't just coach talk.

We beat NJIT on the road 74-69 after being down by 10 at the half. Chloe Sterling 21points,freshman) Corbett 15 points and 9 rebounds, Swint 13 points and 13 rebounds and Emma with 12 points on 4 three's. A real find for us this PG Sterling and we have a freshman that's playing like a junior or senior. This is a far better team then last year and it's clear WE'RE GOING TO WIN SOME GAMES.

Chloe Sterling got our first CAA Player of the Week since Boogie Brozoski on December 24, 2018. In between, we went 94 weeks without having the Player of the Week.

Great news and hopefully Sterling can be one of the key players to start pointing this program in the right direction

If I run into Coach Atkinson today I'm going to commend her on the new acquisitions and tell her this is the best team she has had since she came here. I think by far and I know this could be premature but I'm getting a very good feeling about this team. I don't know who scouted this kid Corbett but she's a find in the early going. I've told coach Atkinson about the shortcomings of some of her prior teams but kudos to this team. Lets hope they develop into something special.

Didn't get to see this game but nice to see another win. Looks like Sterling starred again with Von Essen also having a strong scoring game. Swint had a double double and of what i can tell so far has been staying out of foul trouble which is a good sign.

I was at this game and continue to believe that this team could make some noise in the CAA. We have four starters that can legitimately average in double figures. I thought in the first half Sterling wasn't be very aggressive offensively and only had a few points but was playing aggressive D. I remember our old teams especially the ones that made some noise in the NIT would full court press the opposing teams and get steals and points off live ball turnovers. Last night we utilized a modest press and kept trapping the ball handler. It was effective and they had to call timeouts. Imagine a HU women's team scoring 75 points against a D1 team. We scored 82 points last year in a game against UNCW and 71 points against Hampton in the 1st round of the CAA. Those were the only times we scored over 70 points last year. We averaged 56 points a game last year making our margin for error very small. In 3 games this year we are averaging 69 ppg. Even in games where we don't play great D we still will have a good chance to win if we can continue to score the way we have in these games.
So last night Emma hit her first shot from the top of the key and continued from there having a strong game. She finished with 19 points, Sterling turning it on in the second half finished with 21 had 4 turnovers and 6 assists. Swint had 14 points and 12 rebounds and freshman extraordinaire Corbett had 11 points and 7 rebounds playing 27 minutes. We only had 11 turnovers and hit 15-18 FT's 83%. This will be a stat to keep an eye on. We shot 38% from 3 6-16. A very balanced attack and a good start for this team. Also worthy of mentioning here was Fargos' rebounding getting 5 but 4 were O rebounds leading to second chance points.

Stats to follow would be assits to turnovers
We had 13 assists and 11 turnovers
In the past, we would average over 20 turnovers a game
That means more possessions and more opportunities to score. Hence we go from 56 points game to almost 70.
Team is much more athletic and deeper than in the past

We continue to improve the program and get three early signings in the early signing period. Two girls are 6'1 that's a plus.

We played Manhattan yesterday at Draddy gym and if our games were just 3 quarters we would be undefeated so we blow a 10 point lead go into the 4th quarter with a one point lead and lose 62-49. Coach needs to figure out why we run out of gas/desire in the 4th quarter. We needed scoring from both Corbett 4 points 10 rebounds and Swint 5 points 6 boards and didn't get it. Chloe put points on the board but yet this wasn't a great game for her turning it over 7 times. At one point in the 4th there was a breakdown on D for Manhattan Chloe walked in to an uncontested layup and missed the shot. I couldn't believe it. Our 16 turnovers led to Manhattan getting 16 points to our 7. We shot 8-14 from the charity stripe while they shot 13-15. So many reasons why we lost this game.Their 6'3 center outplayed ours and had 16 points and 13 rebounds. Chloe had 14 points, Emma 12 and Fargo 9. Nice game for Fargo who has been playing inspired basketball.
We will regroup and play some winning basketball.

This was a return to the way we played last year
This team has more talent, but I don't think it says deep as we seem to think
We have four reliable players the other players we have no idea what we're going to get from game to game
It's still early in the season fatigue is not a problem for the fourth quarter
We just need to have reliable scoring and players that are not named Corbert, Sterling, Swint and Von Esson

We drove out to Manhattan for this one. They played great in the 1st Q both offensively and defensively and then went downhill from there. I didn't look at the box, but our post players missed a bunch of layups inside that they have been hitting. Corbett had her 1st off game - just couldn't buy a basket.
They did seem to wear down later in the game - the Manhattan bigs were just too much at that point - looked very skilled.
The interesting thing is it seems coach has shortened her bench from past years and was making a lot fewer substitutions. I'm not sure if I'm right, but i think Emma payed the final 3 quarters without a break. Felt like i was watching a mens game from that standpoint.
Disappointing loss - that is a team i think they should beat.

You're the man Pride it's been a long time since I was in that gym! You're a good supporter of both men and women's basketball. We're a rare breed. We need to figure out the 4th quarter it has been our demise. Like you said missed easy buckets at the basket include a real bad miss from Sterling. Gooden who seemed to be born again at the end of last season finds herself only getting a few minutes. Carter is grabbing all the minutes now. Fargo has played much better then I could have expected. A real plus so far.

Thanks TC. The women deserve our support - they work hard. I think this is the most talent they’ve had in the past few years and could be a turning point for the program.
Great point on Fargo. She hit a few big shots to settle things down and appears to have become a leader on the floor. Very active on D as well.
Gooden i agree. She looked great in the tourney run and hasn’t gotten then minutes this year. I caught coach making a point on work at the season ticket holder event that seems to be pointed at Gooden based on the reaction, so not sure what’s going on there. She has the ability to create but she missed a few and never saw the floor again. Think if Gooden is on she could be a real X factor.
That said we need good post play to win. Shots were there - most were just too hard off the glass. They can have a real advantage with Swint and Corbett up front.
Hopefully a game they can learn from as they get used to playing together.
