MBB Game 20 William & Mary, Jan 25 (Thu), 7 PM

We host William & Mary on Thursday. One of the most competitive teams when we entered the CAA, W&M has fallen on hard times. The Tribe is just 7-12 and 2-4, and has lost its last three games, to Stony Brook, Campbell and NC A&T.

Trey Moss leads a quartet of players averaging between 12 and 13 ppg. The Tribe is close to their opponents in all major statistical categories except two: opponents have more steals (108 to 87) and more blocks (61 to 28).

FloHoops will carry the game.

Great chance to get over .500 in CAA play for the first time this season as they start the second third of their conference schedule.

Flo is streaming the game for free.

KenPom expects us to win 81-66 with a 91 percent chance of winning. Other teams playing on Tuesday and Wednesday could change that slightly. With three games this week, and one of the remaining two hosting a very bad W&M team, Dubar could be CAA Player of the Week. Thomas fell to fourth on the CAA all-kenpom.com Team.

Edit: https://gohofstra.com/news/2024/1/23/me ... stead.aspx is our preview titled "Pride And Tribe To Battle On Thursday In Hempstead."

Just like the Hampton game ESPN thinks we will win this game and gives us a 93% chance of winning. BEWARE!!

Hofstra -13.5
O/U 144.5
Equates to a 79-65 Pride win.

For only the second time this season against a D-I opponent and for the first time since the win against Buffalo, can we see this team play a full 40 minutes and coast to a wire-to-wire win in this one, PLEASE?

This team does not care about halftime leads...keep it close and then blow them out in second half.

Terrible approach. Resulted in losses against Charleston, Northeastern, and Campbell (in those last two, they didn't even keep it close by halftime, so even that doesn't always work).

Could at minimum be 5-1 (and maybe even 6-0) and looking very different instead of 3-3 right now if they cared about halftime leads. On the flip side, the reason they beat Delaware wasn't their second half at all, it was because of their first half and building a 12-point halftime lead. Not all games are won and lost in the second half.

Yep, that strategy sucks. Although I don't think HUSID is promoting that, more stating that's what this team is doing.

W&M is yet another terrible team in this weak conference - let's see HU come out and own a game from start to finish for once. I'm not going to be gassing them up for beating bad teams - they're supposed to beat these teams... by a lot.

I'm not a believer in this group yet - show me I should be.

Yeah, for sure. I wasn't taking it that way at all and didn't mean for it to sound that way from me. Was just echoing HUSID with my $0.02 on that. I think we're all in agreement that first half play is crucial.

https://defiantlydutch.blogspot.com/202 ... fstra.html is Jerry Beach's "I'll Be Quirky: William & Mary at Hofstra." The 80-74 win at Stony Brook was our second 80-74, and the first one was against LIU on December 2, 1963. It is the first time we trailed by at least 9 in consecutive wins since an 82-76 win over James Madison on December 28, 2019, and a 75-67 win over Towson on December 30, 2019. Wins over Hampton and Stony Brook were the first time we scored at least 48 in consecutive second halves against Division I teams since a 93-87 win over William & Mary on February 9, 2019 when Justin Wright-Foreman tied the team record by scoring 48, and a 99-95 win over Charleston on February 14, 2019. More recently, we did that in second halves against John Jay and Arkansas. We trailed at halftime 12 times this season, 12 times last season, and 10 times in 2021-2022. It was our first win when Bryce Washington scored under 7 points.

Dubar became our first player with at least 30 points and at least 10 rebounds since Loren Stokes had 30 points and 15 rebounds in a 77-68 win hosting William & Mary on January 20, 2007. When I read Jerry say it was rare, I guessed that it was that game by Stokes, and I was right. I went to a Sweet Sixteen that day. That was 548 games ago. In between, Charles Jenkins had a 30/10 doubel-double with 32 points and 13 assists in a 99-96 double overtime win hosting James Madison on February 18, 2009.

KenPom expects us to win 80-66 with a 91 percent chance of winning. That is down from an 81-66 score and the same probability after Monday.

We are 28-15 (.651) against William & Mary, and 12 of the last 24 games were decided by 6 or fewer points or in overtime.

Here is today's CAA schedule:

Elon at Campbell at 5:00 P.M. on CBS Sports Network
Monmouth at Stony Brook at 6:31 P.M. on SNY
UNCW at Northeastern at 7:00 P.M. on NESN+
North Carolina A&T at Delaware at 7:00 P.M. on DSN
Drexel at Towson at 7:00 P.m. on MeTV Baltimore
Charleston at Hampton at 7:00 P.M.

Yup. Don't recall them wearing them two straight games before. W&M in their black alternates instead of green.

Tyler has fallen about as deeply into a slump as any good player I can remember for us. He's thinking and not reacting now, 2nd guessing his own decisions.

Lead at 8 with Sunday entering the game....let's see if they can maintain it for once with him on the floor

William & Mary has one of the few kids in the country who shoots 3s as much as Tyler... lets not guard him. Great strategy

Thomas is now over 2,000 career pts and over 1,000 at Hofstra.

Offensive malpractice that Dubar only has 10 shots (making half) after going 11/14 on Monday while Thomas goes 4/16 & 1/11 from 3.

German's aggressiveness attacking the basket has made a big difference. Saving the offense from being entirely 1-dimensional
