MBB Game 21 - UNCW, 1/19/23 (Thurs), 7 PM

Post by Jojogunne »

Thursday night's match-up with UNCW (15-5) will give our men a chance to prove if they deserve to be considered one of the CAA's better teams.

Although UNCW still has to face the heart of the CAA, the Seahawks are arguably the second-best team in the CAA. When we joined the CAA, they were the top team, led by Brett Blizzard.

The Seahawks' losses have come to UNC, Oklahoma, UConn, Charleston, and, surprisingly, W&M (the last two by just 2 points apiece).

UNCW has five players averaging 8 ppg or more, including Trazarien White, who leads with 14 ppg.

The game is on the CBS Sports Network.

This is a MUST game IMO...we need to show we are a top four team in the CAA and this is the game to prove it after the Towson debacle.
Come on boys, show us what you're made of.

I still remember this one, in 2003, I think when Blizzard was a senior. UNCW went up 27, I think with a little over 14 minutes left and the Hofstra made a huge run, got it down to two in the final minute and had a chance to win or tie (I think) in the final seconds. They almost pulled off a miracle.

To date this is the most important game of the season as we need to rebound from a bad loss that was a collective effort against Towson.

ESPN: 70.1% chance Hofstra wins (sounds high - I see this as a very competitive matchup, like I think we all probably do, but I like the faith ESPN is placing HU, although I think much of the +20% above the 50% mark is due to home court).

They don't give the point spread until the day of the game.

According to Sagarin, which has the home court at 2.85 points, we are 4 point favs, mostly due to said home court.

He won POY as a junior in 2001-2002 and a senior in 2002-2003. George Mason's George Evans won the three seasons before that, so there was repetition. The next four POYs ending with Loren Stokes in 2006-2007 won it once. The next seven seasons had VCU's Eric Maynor twice, Charles Jenkins twice, George Mason's Ryan Pearson, and Towson's Jerrelle Benimon twice. Benimon and David Robinson are the only forwards or centers to win two POYs. The last eight seasons had seven winners, with Justin Wright-Foreman winning in 2017-2018 and 2018-2019.

https://gohofstra.com/news/2023/1/17/me ... twork.aspx is titled "Hofstra Hosts UNCW On Thursday; Game To Air On CBS Sports Network." We are 25-23 (.521) vs. UNCW. The only opponents with more than six games we are more even against are Boston University (11-11), Drexel (49-47, .510), and Iona (21-22, .488). We are .500 with 1, 2, or 3 wins against thirteen schools, which are Buffalo, Chicago State, Dayton, Nebraska, New York Maritime, Niagara, North Carolina A&T, Northeastern Illinois, Pennsylvania, Rutgers, St. Michael's, Stetson, and Troy.

https://uncwsports.com/news/2023/1/18/m ... games.aspx is UNCW's preview titled "Seahawks Go Island Hopping For Two Games." UNCW is 5-3 away with the last 5 games being wins. We won our last four hosting UNCW to improve to 12-8 (.600). Amari Kelly, who averages 8.0 points, is originally from Roosevelt, but he moved to Georgia.

https://s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/side ... 011923.pdf is UNCW's Game Notes. On Page 1 they mistakenly say "Dubar Darlinstone." The two "key reserves" include Marshall instead of Plotnikov.

https://uncwsports.com/sports/mens-bask ... ts/2022-23 has UNCW's statistics.

KenPom predicts us to win 71-68.

All of the CAA games are at the same time. Northeastern at Stony Brook is on SNY. Elon has off.

http://defiantlydutch.blogspot.com/2023 ... ngton.html is Jerry Beach's "I'll Be Quirky: UNC Wilmington." Estrada became the first player on any team from 2010-2011 to now to attempt at least 10 threes without making any. We attempted fewer than ten free throws 18 times in 52 games coached by Claxton, and 18 times in 14 seasons with 449 games before that.

https://csnbbs.com/thread-963692-post-18733195.html is UNCW fans' topic, but they have fans on another site that I did not search for.

http://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcas ... ?id=425820 will have statistics.

Edit: UNCW is starting Jamarii Thomas (guard, 7.8 points), Maleeck Harden-Hayes (guard, 9.6 points), Donovan Newby (guard, 6.8 points), Trazarien White (forward, 14.2 points), and Amari Kelly (forward, 8.0 points)

Jameer Nelson Jr. is starting for Delaware after missing four games.

We went up 9, blew it, were tied at 30 at halftime, were tied and 32, and ended on a 38-14 run to win 70-46. Thomas scored earlier while Estrada wasn't, and Thomas scored 28. Estrada scored 6 in the first half, and 8 in the first three minutes of the second half, which also included him missing two threes that had the rebound knocked out of bounds by UNCW. He made his only three with 3:38 left, and shot 8-18 including threes 1-7. He scored 17. Estrada and Thomas had 7 rebounds to lead all players, and Estrada had 4 assists. CBS Sports Network said Estrada is the only player averaging at least 20 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists. Those were our only double-digit scorers. Williams shot 4-5 and scored 8 in 22 minutes, but only had 1 rebound. Boachie-Yiadom committed his second foul with 13:45 left in the first half, and Williams played the rest of the half. Boachie-Yiadom made both of his shots and had 4 points and 2 rebounds. We had more rebounds, 32 to 28. Before the game, what would have been the odds on our rebounds not by Williams or Boachi-Yiadom being more than UNCW's. Dubar scored for 4 by shooting 1-4 and free throws 2-3. Plotnikov scored 4 by shooting 1-3 and free throws 2-2. Carlos shot 1-3 and made a three to score 3. He had 4 rebounds, and led all players with 5 assists. Marshall made his only shot to score 2. Barrouk, Best, Galgano, and Tomasco entered with 1:47 left. Galgano missed a three, which was the only shot by those four, and Galgano and Tomasco had 1 rebound. Washington did not play, so I wonder if he is injured.

Maleeck Harden-Hayes was UNCW's only double-digit scorer with 13. Their leading scorer for the season, Trazarien White, scored 3. He shot field goals 1-6 and free throws 1-3. Donovan Newby was second on the team with 8. Victor Enoh led them with 6 rebounds. He played 17 minutes, which is double his average of 8.5 before the game, and that is because Amari Kelly fouled out. Harden-Hayes shot 5-7, Newby shot 3-5, and the rest of UNCW shot 10-33. Harden-Hayes had 5 rebounds. Shykeim Phillips scored 6 and led them with 8 field goal attempts. He led them with 3 assists. UNCW used eight players for at least 15 minutes, including Kelly, who committed two offensive fouls in the first 2:02 of the second half to make four, and fouled out with 8:53 left. UNCW missed the first of a one-and-one three times in the second half, and the third time was with 8:37 left. It must be rare for a team to miss the first of a one-and-one three times with at least 8:37 left in a half or game. They brought in three players with 1:47 left to make thirteen. UNCW committed 16 turnovers, and shot free throws 6-14. We had more points off turnovers 16 to 5.

Here are today's other CAA scores:

Charleston won 69-55 at Monmouth. Charleston was favored by 21, but they trailed by 9, and their only lead of the first half was 3-2. By halftime they were down 3, I said I wouldn't be surpised if they won by double-digits, and they did. Reyne Smith shot threes 7-10 and led all scorers with 27. Andrew Ball led Monmouth with 16.

Drexel won 79-73 hosting Hampton. Hampton's Russell (Deuce) Dean led all scorers with 21. Lamar Oden Jr. led Drexel with 19, and shot threes 4-5. Amari Williams had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Towson won 79-67 at North Carolina A&T. Kam Woods led North Carolina A&T with 29 points, but their next highest was 10. Towson had four double-digit scorers led by Nygal Russell's 18.

Delaware won 80-53 hosting William & Mary to have the CAA's biggest margin of victory tonight. Jameer Nelson Jr. returned and led all players with 20 points. He shot 9-14. Delaware had four double-digit scorers. William & Mary's only double-digit scorer was Gabe Dorsey with 18. He shot 6-11, and all of his attempts were threes.

Northeastern won 79-66 at Stony Brook. Stony Brook led 32-31 at halftime, so like our game both teams scored about 30 in the first half, and one team played much better in the second half. Stony Brook's Frankie Policelli led all players with 22 points and shot 9-12. Northeastern had Jahmyl Telfort and Masai Troutman score 20. Troutman shot 6-9, and led all players with 7 rebounds. Stony Brook had only 19 rebounds. Policelli entered averaging 9.9 rebounds, but had only 5.

Awfully quiet on these boards tonite maybe a nuclear bomb that I haven't heard about, lol. I just came back from this game and it was nasty outside but but nice in the Mack where we take a tie game at the half 30-30 and outscore UNCW 40-16 blowing them right out of the gym winning by 24 points. It's the old saying no two games are the same coming off a 21 point loss to Towson where we know they aren't 21 points better then us and are we 24 points better then UNCW. Things for sure went our way in the 2nd half with our D keeping their leading scorer White to just 3 points and in fact they only had one player in double figures. Estrada while only scoring 17 had some tough luck on in and out three's but finished with 4 assists 4 steal and 7 boards. An all around nice game for Aaron who doesn't try to do too much knowing the double teams and finding the open man. Game ball to Tyler Thomas once again showing he can score 28 points on 11-18 3-6 and 7 rebounds. Carlos 5 assists 1-3 and three points with 4 rebounds. Warren Williams also a respectable game 4-5 and 8 points but only 1 board. The story in this game clearly was our 2nd half D only limiting them to 16 points maybe a record for us in a half don't know. We drop them into third place and remained tied with Towson and Drexel.

https://gohofstra.com/news/2023/1/19/me ... t-win.aspx is titled "Hofstra Runs Away From UNCW In Second Half In 24-Point Win." We are 5-0 on Thursdays, and 26-5 (.839) in our last 31 games on Thursdays. Next Thursday is my birthday, and it will be very bad if we don't beat Elon. This was our fourth consecutive game decided by at least 20 points, and maybe we will blow out Elon to extend the streak.

https://gohofstra.com/boxscore.aspx?pat ... l&id=12118 is the box score. The attendance of 1,732 is not good in general, but for a weeknight while the students are out (I'm assuming), it is okay.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFCYVEPEEZo is highlights.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mhyfqvf1DVw is the press conference.

The CAA standings through 46 of 117 games are:

Charleston 8-0
Hofstra 6-2
Towson 5-2
Drexel 5-2
UNCW 5-3
Northeastern 4-3
North Carolina A&T 4-4
Stony Brook 3-3
Delaware 3-4
William & Mary 3-4
Elon 0-6
Monmouth 0-6
Hampton 0-7

The CAA is the only conference with three winless teams. That will end on Saturday when Hampton plays at Monmouth at 2:30 P.M. on SNY.

Charleston is the first team to 20 wins. There are 363 teams.

As I stated following the Towson "you never know which HU team will show up on any given night". Tonight's blowout is a window into how good this team can be. It's all about the D. HU played tough as nails D tonight for at least 30 -35 minutes. It was fun to watch UNCW struggle to get open shots. Keep it up guys and you will go far!

Students should be back for next home game - hopefully there will be some interest. If the team continues to play like they did tonight, they deserve to get some buzz!

Guess ESPN knew what it was talking about with this one, though it should have been 50% for the first half and 95% for the second half.
