Funny that the two qualifying games mentioned in the link below are at the site of the CAA tourney two years ago and this year...

Why does the release talk about the 2021 team?
Re: JWF Named To USA Basketball's FIBA Men’s World Cup Roste
I think it's like the 2020 Olympics. They still called it that and we still saw Tokyo 2020 branded even though it took place in 2021 because of Covid.Jojogunne wrote:Why does the release talk about the 2021 team?

Here are the results and schedule. FIBA Americas has 16 teams competing for 7 spots out of 32 in the FIBA Basketball World Cup tri-hosted by Indonesia, Japan, and Phillipines from August 25 to September 10, 2023. United States is in Group D with Mexico, Puerto Rico (which is a territory but competes independently in basketball, soccer, and maybe other sports), and Cuba. Each team hosts and goes to every other team, although that won't happen because the first set of games were in Chihuahua City, Mexico including games Mexico didn't play in. United States beat Cuba 95-90 and lost to Mexico 97-88. Mexico is 2-0, Puerto Rico and United States are 1-1, and Cuba is 0-2. On February 24, United States hosts Puerto Rico, and Cuba hosts Mexico. Three days later, United States has Mexico, and Cuba hosts Puerto Rico. The final two games of the roun will be on July 1 and 4. The top three advance to Round 2, but teams want to do better than just advance because games against teams in their group count in Round 2. Round 2 will have a group of six from Groups A and C, and a group of six from Groups B and D. United States will be competiting against three of Brazil, Uruguay, Colombia, and Chile. Round 2 will have ten games, with four games against the two other teams fron a country's group that advanced counting along with six new games. The top three in each group and the better fourth place team will qualify. All confederations (continents) have qualifiers at the same time.

Can someone see if Adrian Uter is on the Puerto Rican team.
Re: JWF Named To USA Basketball's FIBA Men’s World Cup Roste
Stu I think Uter played in the Puerto Rican leagues but represented Jamaica in the FIBA tournament in the past.
However here are some familiar names on the PR roster:
JJ Barea
Renaldo Balkman

Might it have been easier to post a link instead?EvanJ wrote:Here are the results and schedule. Edit: I clicked on my link, and it shortened it to make it not work. Click on the link and add an end parenthesis at the end.

I spent a little time on the FIBA Basketball World Cup website tonight. It's not the easiest site to navigate, but I was able to ferret out some scheduling info.
As Evan noted in his post, the USA is in Group D, with Cuba, Mexico and Puerto Rico. The USA lost to Mexico and defeated Cuba in November with an almost entirely different roster.
Next week, the USA has two games: Puerto Rico on Thursday, Feb. 24, at 7 p.m. and Mexico on Sunday, Feb. 27, at 1 p.m. It looks like you can watch live on Courtside1891.com or wait for the free replay on YouTube. Two more games are schedule for July.

As for Justin's new G League team, this really is his old team, the Erie BayHawks. They just relocated to Birmingham. This is the third time an "Erie BayHawks" franchise has relocated to another market. The original BayHawks franchise (2008–2017) relocated to Florida as the Lakeland Magic. The second BayHawks franchise (2017–2019) relocated to Georgia as the College Park Skyhawks. I know it's cold in Erie, PA, in the winter, but really, three relocations???

USA, Mexico, and Puerto Rico advanced, and Cuba is eliminated. USA is 2-1 through 3 of 4 games that carry over to the Second Round, where USA will play three of Brazil, Uruguay, Chile, and Colombia.
