W&M went on a 17-2 run to tie it, went up 1, and Charleston's John Meeks made the winning shot with 1.1 second left that bounced on the rim twice. It was 74-73, and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypkyjynM84U has highlights. In the loss, W&,'s Brandon Carroll did a great combination of statistics for the first time from 2010-2011 (as far back as the Sports Reference College Basketball Play Index goes) to now, and read twitter.com/evanj3535 if you want to find it. Charleston freshman Reyne Smith made 6 of 11 threes and scored 25. Three of Charleston's six CAA games were decided by 1, and they lost the first two.

Cooks is the 619th player to 2,000 points. 408 have 2,100, 270 have 2,200, 174 have 2,300, 106 have 2,400, 74 have 2,500 (Jenkins is 70th), 21 have 2,750, and 10 have 3,000.

Glad to see Charleton win, maybe they won't be as hungry against us...looks like W&M, though competitive, is reverting to the mean.

Ray will tied Buie's record of 141 games for us, and Ray is 1 behind JWF for second in threes.

Edit: The CAA free throw percentage record is .921 by JMU's Kent Culuko in 1993-1994. Estrada (.936), Ray (.925), and Charleston freshman Reyne Smith (.939) could break the record. It requires 80 attempts. Estrada and Smith are on pace for that many, while Ray needs postseason success and/or to attempt more per game. If Smith breaks the record, it will be the second time in four seasons that a CAA record was broken by a freshman. UNCW's Kai Toews had 253 assists in 2018-2019, which broke the old record of 251. Juan'ya Green had 243 as a senior.

We're 2.5 point favorites in this game with an O/U of 157.5. or maybe 80-77. It should be a close game with a lot of offense.

ESPN gives us a 53% chance of winning...closer than what I would have expected both on the spread and winning percentage.

They have lost some close games and are getting a lot of production from their FRESHMAN guard a kid from Australia. However now that we're healthy and at almost full strength we will be a tough team to beat. If Cooks is contributing we're a very formidable team.

https://static.caasports.com/custompage ... M#team.ind has their statistics. Half of their 16 players are freshman, albeit three have played 2 minutes. They get 36 percent of their points and 39 percent of their minutes from freshmen. They are sixth of 358 teams with 42.1 rebounds.

https://cofcsports.com/news/2022/1/26/c ... arena.aspx is their preview.

https://s3.amazonaws.com/sidearm.sites/ ... a_Home.pdf is their Game Notes.

http://stats.statbroadcast.com/statmonitr/?id=367931 will have statistics.

The overall Sagarin expects us to win by 2.21. Team Rankings predicts 80.0-77.7.

Even looked like Cramer was practicing judging from the pictures that were posted from SC.

If Cramer plays, we could use ten players for the first time since a 73-71 loss hosting Drexel on February 6, 2021.

I'm surprised Jerry Beach hasn't written I'll Be Quirky yet.

Edit: Here are the statistics links for the other CAA games, which are all at the same time:

Delaware at Towson: http://stats.statbroadcast.com/statmonitr/?id=370337
W&M at Elon: http://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=367252
Northeastern at UNCW: http://stats.statbroadcast.com/statmonitr/?id=371165
Drexel at JMU: http://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=369235 (on NBC Sports Washington, only televised game)

Edit: http://defiantlydutch.blogspot.com/2022 ... eston.html is Jerry Beach's "I'll Be Quirky: Hofstra at Charleston." Our 72-70 win at Northeastern was not a unicorn score (the first time we won by that score), but it was our first 72-50 win since we beat Baltimore in the third game of 1956-1957. I don't know if that Baltimore still exists or has a new name. We are 12-7 for the second consecutive season. It was our biggest margin of victory against Northeastern since a 94-70 win in the America East on January 26, 2001. We ended our 51 game streak of games vs. Division I teams decided by under 20 points. That was the longest active streak, which now belongs to Northern Kentucky with 46 games. Three of the five active 2,000 point scorers played for or against us this season in Cooks, Detroit Mercy's Antoine Davis, and Richmond's Grant Golden, albeit Golden reached 2,000 after playing us.

We are using the same starters that don't include Cooks or Ray.

Curious starting lineup again. Two of our better perimeter shooters (Ray and Cooks) are on the bench.

EDIT: we're leading 11-0. What do I know.

To EvanJ, I just looked up the U of Baltimore. The college has not had sports since 1983.

Ray is lost in the offense. Estrada and Cooks are too ball dominant. Ray rarely touches the ball and often rushes a shot when he does.

Cant say its a good win, but its a win. Estrada is on another level. What a game from him.

Unsure why Speedy didnt use a timeout on the 2 possessions to end the game. The offense was stagnant and we had 2 piss poor shot attempts. Just happy we won.

HU ahead by 3 with only a few seconds left, why doesn't Speedy have the team foul? I am not sure that this was the only time Speedy has decided on the strategy of not fouling. Does anyone know why? Wags, you are very good at explaining why this was the choice.

Estrada took the team on his back and was clutch. Speedy has to figure a way to get cooks and Ray to play together. Maybe run some off the ball screens for Ray to free him up to get better looks. A win is a win and its on the road so we will take it. We better play much better if we want to win at UNCW.

Been saying it all season, through the good and the bad games. Another no-show game for him, his sixth of the season and second in a row. Not all his fault. His teammates and his coaching staff are not involving him enough and he can't get into a rhythm. Part of it's on him. He needs to more aggressively look to be part of the offense. He's too passive (that didn't start this year). And he also needs to inspire faith in his teammates to get him the ball more by taking advantage of the limited opportunities he gets some games, instead of the 1-for-4, 1-for-6 we're seeing from him too often.

This will come back to bite them in March if it continues. Estrada can be the top guy, Cooks second on most nights, but Ray needs to be a big key, more like he was against Delaware and Drexel. Thank goodness for Estrada, or they'd be under .500 in CAA play instead of 5-2. He never had a 30-point game in his career before this four-game win streak. Tonight, his second one of those during the streak.

Dubar continues to be big. After Estrada, his overall play and the rebounding of Iyiola were invaluable tonight.

It's good to see them come out ready and not resting on the laurels of a three-game streak and instead, right from the start, come out looking for a fourth straight win. Leading 13-0 and 20-5 right from the outset was what this game tonight. The players and the entire staff deserve credit for starting the game with that mindset. Hope that continues at the start of almost every game going forward. It really puts the opposition on its heels.

Stop! We won the game on the road and covered. We are not the Warriors.
