Delaware @ MBB, Saturday, 1/15/22, 2 PM

Post by Jojogunne »

Hofstra hosts Delaware on Saturday. Having faced the Pride 97 times before, the Blue Hens rank as our No. 1 MBB opponent.

Hofstra leads the series 63-34 and has taken 9 of the last 11 meetings, but the Hens are a veteran team with multiple All-CAA candidates. Should be a good one.

Jojogunne linked to the preview, but not to the Game Notes at https://s3.amazonaws.com/sidearm.sites/ ... game17.pdf which still has Silverio as a starter. If Cooks doesn't play, he will stop qualifying for statistics, and this game will decide who takes first because five of the next six are Estrada, Ray, and Delaware's Ryan Allen, Jameer Nelson Jr., and Dylan Painter. They all range from 14.1 to 14.9 points. If Painter scores 30, the five guys above him score 15 or fewer, and Cooks doesn't play, Painter will jump from seventh to first.

Today is the last of 41 consecutive days without hosting a Division I team.

https://bluehens.com/news/2022/1/14/men ... fstra.aspx is Delaware's preview. They have 40 days between home games, and they have five consecutive conference away games for the first time.

https://s3.amazonaws.com/bluehens.com/d ... fstra1.pdf is Delaware's Game Notes. They are one of three teams to return their entire roster, and they have 17 players. We have 42.2 percent of our minutes from returning players.

http://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=368970 will have statistics.

The CAA has four games tomorrow. Also at 2:00 P.M., Drexel is at Northeastern. At 4:00 P.M. Towson is at Elon, and JMU is at W&M.

Rather than bumping up the JMU topic, I'll respond about us starting freshmen when we weren't rebuilding. In 2003-2004, Stokes became a starter during his freshmen season and started 21 of 29 games. We were 14-15 after being bad in our first two CAA seasons, so it was building, not rebuilding. I define rebuilding as being average or bad after being good. Agudio started as a freshman in 2004-2005 when we were 21-9. Jenkins started as a freshman in 2006-2007 when we were 12-18. Chaz Williams and Halil Kanacevic started as freshmen in 2009-2010 when we were 19-15. Jordan Allen started as a freshman in 2012-2013 when we were 7-25, and two of the thieves were starters. Somebody mentioned Jamall Robinson who started as a freshman in 2013-2014 when we were 10-23. Pemberton started as a freshman in 2016-2017 when we were 15-17. Stafford Trueheart started 13 games as a freshman in 2017-2018 when we were 19-12. I don't count that because it was a minority of games, but I decided to mention it. Cramer started as a freshman in 2020-2021 when we were 13-10. Stokes, Agudio, Jenkins, Williams, Kanacevic, Allen, Robinson, Pemberton, and Cramer are nine players in 19 seasons including this one. Kenny Adeleke started as a freshman in our first season in the CAA in 2001-2002 when we went 12-20. I'm not checking if any of our other 2001-2002 or 2002-2003 starters were freshmen. Cramer had the best winning percentage at .565. Williams, Kanacevic, Allen, and Robinson were four consecutive players who transferred, and Cramer lost his starting spot this season.

So what about this game? We're 5.5 point favorites playing at home. Delaware returns all its starters from last year and is 11-5, 2-1 CAA having beat COC and Drexel and losing to UNCW. I wonder if Bey can hold his own against Painter and will we defend the three point line. This could very well wind up being a three point shooting contest and we need to hit our shots and defend the perimeter. Delaware was the pre-season favorite to win the conference but clearly is beatable.

Definitely more than I thought but to clarify I was talking about true freshman. Some on those lists were redshirt freshman.

Agudio and Jenkins redshirted, but it doesn't matter to me. I was surprised to see that https://gohofstra.com/sports/mens-baske ... er/2021-22 has a drop-down menu with a page with our roster for every season, and we started in 1936-1937.

http://defiantlydutch.blogspot.com/2022 ... fstra.html is Jerry Beach's "I'll Be Quirky: Delaware at Hofstra." Claxton is our first coach to start 9-7.

Ray didn't start. I hope you meant him when you said no Cramer. If Cooks, Ray, and Cramer are out, our bench is Carlos, Simmons, and guys who haven't played all season.

We lead 8-1. The video keeps jumping back to earlier in the game. ESPN's video is more reliable than Flo.

Edit: You meant Cramer. I don't know why Burgess started over Ray. We went up 11-1, but Delaware is on an 8-0 run with two threes and their first two-pointer by Painter who will try for a three-point play after the timeout with 11:55 left in the half. We haven't scored in 3:03. Silverio has 8 points and half of our 12 field goal attempts. We have 5 fouls (2 by Dubar) and 3 turnovers, so Delaware is close while shooting 3-15.

Edit: Ray made threes 43 seconds apart, and the lead is back up to 10 at 23-13. We just committed a shooting foul for our seventh foul with 7:13 left in the half. Dubar and Silverio have 2 fouls. Dubar missed his only shot. Iyiola made a free throw and hasn't attempted a field goal, but he has 5 rebounds. Carlos hasn't shot in 5 minutes, but he's our only player with 2 assists.

8-0, Hofstra (19-10)

14-3, Delaware since trailing 26-15 (32-29, Delaware)

Hens 1/8 from 2, but 8/14 from 3. HU still can't guard the 3 effectively. Gonna be their undoing this season if they don't fix that.

We’re down by 4 at the half. Ray 11, Estrada 10 and Silverio 8 who had to sit with 2 fouls. Dubar also sitting a lot of the half with no points. 35-31

After being up by 10 early we are down by 4 35-31 Delaware. Are we ever going to be 100% healthy this season?

Yup. And that's only part of it. Have to be committed to stopping that as a team. It can't just be, "Well, if they make them, they make them." No, teams make them today. You HAVE to guard, you have to take it away as much as you can. If you do that and they still make them, tip your cap. But no excuse for getting burned, for not closing out, for not communicating, for not rotating effectively. And if you do, you'll lose. Teams take and make too many of them to get away with that, especially when you're not matching it yourselves (Hofstra just 5/16 from 3 in the first half).

Hofstra led in the first half for 15:53, Delaware for 3:24, yet it's the Blue Hens by four starting the second half.

We trail 35-31, and a long three missed by Carlos was not a good way to end the half. Neither Iyiola nor Simmons attempted a field goal. We led in rebounds 8 to 5, but Delaware has 11 of the last 15 to have more, 19 to 15. Ebby Asamoah, who averages 3.3 rebounds, had 4 rebounds in 1:52 and leads all players with 7. Iyiola, Burgess (who averages 1.1 rebounds), and Dylan Painter have 5 rebounds. Ray (11), Estrada (10), Silverio (8), and Iyiola (2) have our points. Burgess, Silverio, and Dubar have 2 fouls, we have four players with 1, and Ray doesn't have any of our 10. Silverio didn't play the last 8:38, and maybe that was a bad idea beceuase we were +9 while he played. He could have sat with 2 fouls and came back. Burgess, Estrada, and Carlos have 2 assists. Delaware made 2 of 9 twos and 8 of 16 threes. We will have bad games if we don't defend threes better. In our last 2.5 games, our opponents shot threes 37-76 (.487). We could end today averaging over 10 threes made per game and over 10 threes allowed per game. Gianmarco Arletti, who averages 3.9 points in 13.5 minutes, did not play for Delaware.

7-2 Delaware start to the second half extends the run over both halves to 27-7. Blue Hens have their largest lead, 42-33. after Hofstra's biggest lead was 26-15.

In addition to the earleir 3s now, Painter starting to hurt them down low also.

Good defense by Hofstra on Painter later though... stopping Painter down low, then after Painter got his miss back, forcing him into a bad pass and a turnover that led to a breakout and a fastbreak three-point play for Dubar. Hofstra back within 42-40.
