I think there's some misconception here - I don't think ANYONE is claiming that AW is a superstar or that he should replace RG or that he should play 30 min a game - I am DEF not clamoring for that - any chop busting in that regard has just been for fun
What I AM saying, and have for MONTHS now, is that a proper rotation and bench use MUST be developed, and that takes real PT, not practice time - it is completely ridiculous to think that a team is just so good at this level that they are too good to worry about depth - not in the CAA and winning the CAAT - are there complete flukes once every 20 YEARS? Sure - and HU just may be one, but that isn't proven yet.
I don't think it's any coincidence that JMU has given HU it's toughest test - it's a combo of talent (Curry) and major depth - some of you need to stop pretending like that's not a factor.
AW, JWF, and DB need a few minutes a game - but it has to be done right, as to not disrupt the flow of the starting 5, but to actually help them - I did not like the lack of use early on, but I am LOVING the use now - not much has changed in terms of actual PT, a couple of more minutes is fine and its enough to help - but what has really changed is the TIMING of their use - it has gone from end of game to the first half - that is actually a significant difference, even though the PT is still subtle
If AW for example is in for 5-10 max a game, and he produces 2 pts, 2 boards, and 2 blocks, with an emphatic dunk for a boost in momentum/morale, I think that's just what the doctor ordered - I like JWF and DB in that same 5-10 range, and they can have a similar impact in their position
To me it's really all about preparing for certain scenarios in advance of the CAAT, which is the only thing that matters - prepare for a certain matchup, breakup a certain game flow, give someone a breather, switch up the look to confuse the opponent, the 'I' word I won't mention, etc. My whole thing this entire season was not to give bench guys major minutes - it was and still is to give them a few minutes each game to develop JUST ENOUGH to actually be effective when they go in
And I think what JM is doing now in terms of how they're being used is paying off - we'll continue to see if that's the case - but for now, they deserve props for this adjustment - I'm quite serious when I say this could be a differentiating factor for this teams chances come tourney time
