Koons = high basketball IQ. Leadership on the floor, depth at Forward position and an inside outside threat. Do we dare compare him to Kieza.
Re: MBB recruits 2015
Let's get him on the floor and make sure he's healthy before he goes to the Hall of Fame!

Not quite sure a D3 transfer was who anyone had on mind, but welcome to the Pride regardless, Hunter Sabety. Will have to sit a year, and then has 2 years remaining.

I'm pretty sure he's our 13th scholarship, so I assume we're no longer in the running for Kahlil Dukes.

Hunter Sabety (Oceanside, NY) 6-8, 240
Sabety (pronounced suh-bay-tee) spent his freshman and sophomore campaigns at Tufts University (MA) and will have two seasons of eligibility remaining after sitting out the 2015-16 season due to NCAA transfer regulations.
During his senior season at Oceanside, Sabety averaged 22 points, 17 rebounds and eight blocked shots per game
Granted, that was at Oceanside, but crazy numbers! Will be a huge help if he can provide a fraction of that, especially with his size. Only problem is, it will be in the years after Juan'ya and Ameen will depart.

Who is this guy? No profile on verbal commits.
Re: MBB recruits 2015
Believe it or not, this is not a bad pickup. Even though he's a D-III transfer, he turned down 20 D-1 offers his senior year at Oceanside including Iona, Columbia and Marist, to go to Tufts. Talked to my buddy who is a head coach at a high school in Nassau County, and he told me he was the best big man in the county 2 years ago. At 6' 8, 240 lbs, put him along side Gustys and they should dominate the glass.
Re: MBB recruits 2015
And he's a shot blocker, which, for what he doesn't get his hands on, can also mean a shot alterer and deterrent for opposing guards penetrating into the paint -- something HU needs, especially with Kone's departure.Dooku25 wrote:Believe it or not, this is not a bad pickup. Re: MBB recruits 2015
Like him-wonder why he went to div3? maybe academics? tufts highly rated academically.
Re: MBB recruits 2015
Yeah, it seems like academics was the reason. Per http://liherald.com/oceanside/stories/S ... nt_source=
Sabety, who had nearly 20 offers from Division I programs, including Columbia, Iona, and Marist, selected Tufts for all the right reasons. “It was a tough decision, but, in the end, Tufts had everything I was looking for,” Sabety said. “The pre-med program is outstanding, and the basketball team is up-and-coming. The key is academics. That was the deciding factor.
Re: MBB recruits 2015
I like the idea of getting another big. At least we now know that Gustys and Walker will not be alone after the upcoming season. And with five openings, I can't imagine there won't be another big coming next year (2016/2017).
Hopefully he will be a contributor.

Re: MBB recruits 2015
Good to hear he was highly recruited. Was wondering about the decision to add him myself. Surprised to see that a D3 player has to sit out a year though.
Re: MBB recruits 2015
i think I answered my own question (would he be a contributor?) See the below video of him at Tufts. He is basically another Gustys from a size perspective, but he looks to have better hands and more of an offensive game - nice jump hook, short turnaround jumper, alley oops, etc. I believe he will contribute.

Re: MBB recruits 2015
from what I saw on the video has nice post moves, drop step and can create separation when he goes for the jump hook. Nice touch and hands. he is also aware of where the weakside help is coming from. hey he doesnt have to start just give us quality minutes and push walker and Gustys to be better. Will step in when Koons leaves.
Re: MBB recruits 2015
Tough to evaluate him against the level of competition he played. We'll need to trust the staff on this one, and as we know bigs are hard to come by.
Re: MBB recruits 2015
Certainly has the size & bulk and appears to move well for guy his size...let's see what he can do against taller, stronger, more athletic players at D-I level...like HUSID80 said it is tough to evaluate him based on competition he faced....he has a year and a half to prepare for D-I...hopefully JAM & staff sniffed out a sleeper
Re: MBB recruits 2015
Rokas will have someone to bang with in practice now
Re: MBB recruits 2015
Sabety seems like a solid addition. He was pre-med at Tufts, so maybe he'd like to go to medical school here.
As HUSID80 said, I don't understand why a D3 transfer has to sit out. D1 transfers going to D3 schools don't have to sit out a year. Maybe we can apply for a waiver. Sure would be nice to have another big body next year.
BTW, the Tufts "Jumbos" have one of the best team names in the NCAA.

Re: MBB recruits 2015
Would think that if they were planning to apply for a waiver that would have been mentioned somewhere. Maybe they don't want to? Might think he needs the extra year to learn the D1 game and gain some strength. I really like this pickup, unconventional but solid nonetheless. I'm happy that all of the scholarships for 2015 are finally used up so they can get on the 2016 game and see if they can get a head start on the game. I'm satisfied with the roster as it currently stands. Barring any injuries and transfers this team doesn't have any glaring holes, except for maybe a bench wing which Buie/JWF could turn into. I'm hyped for the season! Hard to pick a team in the conference and say they look clearly better than Hofstra right now.

Here's a Drexel fan's early "top 3" for next year, which he tweeted shortly after we announced the addition of Koon.Andersjorstad wrote:Hard to pick a team in the conference and say they look clearly better than Hofstra right now.
