He's got a chance to get life changing money. I can't fault him. I do wish though that they didn't make it seem like he was coming back. Before that I figured 0% chance of him staying, would have made this much easier to swallow.
Program building is so hard in the NIL era. If they could have brought both those guys back (and I assume Cruz leaves now too after this news) it could really have changed the trajectory of this program, and really of the university.

Yeah this is the really sad part because this decision will surely sway Cruz to leave as well. Cruz was coming back based on Preston's supposed decision to stay. Domino effect!

So much for all this:
https://www.midmajormadness.com/ncaa-to ... uardfather
“Hopefully, those two guys will be back with us and we’ll be building around them,” Claxton said optimistically yet cautiously minutes after being bounced from the NCAA Tournament. “I’m confident, but who knows? The season just ended. We’ll sit down with them, their mentors, and kind of see where we’re at with things.
“They can be the foundation. I’m pretty sure if we bring them back, we’ll be [the] preseason No. 1 pick in the league, which doesn’t truly mean anything. As long as those two guys continue to work on their game, which they will, and get better, the future will be bright here at Hofstra.”
I'll never believe another word about supposedly staying again until they actually do.
Why tell Speedy you plan to come back and basically make it seem in interviews like you plan to come back just to hit the portal? Very frustrating.
I wish him the best, he's a great kid, I can't blame him, and will root hard for him (just like I was rooting for David Green in the NIT title game last night). But why do these guys do that? Just leave it open and say you'll see. Don't make it seem like you're coming back only not to. That's twice now. Respect for Cruz who didn't say anything, stayed, and still doesn't say anything now. So, if he leaves, it's not a gut punch.
I guess The Guardfather will have to get to work again with recruiting.

Tough to hear the news on Edmead but the guy hit one of the 5 biggest shots in program history. We sure as heck don’t make the dance without him. Best of luck to him and wherever he goes I’ll be rooting for him.

Ah damn. Heartbreaking, but really can't say unexpected despite the stories at the end of the season. He earned every cent of whatever absurd bag a P5 school is gonna give him. Hopefully Jaeden Roberts stays now. And we trust in Speedy to find the next guy. All we can do in the current world of CBB.
Best of luck to Edmead, and thanks for the memories.
Just finding this out and really a gut punch. So everything that was said by Edmeade not wanting to go anywhere else and that this was the best decision of his life this apparently was all words. I'm more apt to believe that this was the April fools joke but definitely a very disappointing day for Hofstra basketball. Just blown away.
I figured if anyone would buck the trend it would be a 170 pound freshman from Long Island who went to Speedy’s camps as a kid. I get the feeling he could get pushed around at a higher level at this age. As far as what he said you know an 18/19 year old is going to waiver, it’s in the nature of a teanager. Tough to accept but what he did in March will live in Hofstra history forever.

To clarify you’re talking about Preston posting this on IG. As someone reading this thread would likely think you’re saying Cruz posted on IG that he’s leaving (he has not as of yet).

This is truly a heartbreaker for all of us that have this passion for HU sports and basketball specifically. Is he leaving mainly for the money that we didn't/couldn't give him or the chance to play at a higher level. Both probably!

This situation is hard for us, especially for mid-major programs, and honestly, it’s making things messy for college basketball as a whole.
I don’t hold any player responsible. These days, there’s a lot of money and not many rules or true loyalty, so things are wide open.
The days of 'dancing with the girl that you took to the prom,' meaning sticking with your original team out of loyalty, are over.
I don’t know how anyone enjoys being a mid-major coach now. You work hard to find and develop overlooked players, but then you just watch them leave.
Again, I understand where the players are coming from. It’s hard for good coaches at HU not to consider following the same path—taking a smaller role at a bigger program for a bigger paycheck. Good luck to PM, and probably CD too. We didn’t have much time together, but thanks for the memories.

A bummer as was hoping could get him for one more season at least, but not a shock despite what he previously said knowing money he was going to get thrown. He is still forever a Hofstra legend for getting us back to NCAAs and that long-awaited tourney appearance softens the blow in my mind.

The real coaches in college basketball are the mid major coaches
Sorry, but those are in the P5. I'm not really coaches anymore.
Their teams are bought and paid for
We were talking to a Michigan State fan down in Tampa
He said his university allocated $12 million to men's basketball.
How does a mid major compete with that?
The mid major coaches have to rebuild every year

Even some of the P5 teams are not immune to this insanity
The Tennessee women's basketball team has exactly 0 players coming back
Coach needs to put in 15 new players and start from scratch
Now that is insanity

Very disappointing to hear about Edmead. Guess money talks no matter what the kids or their families say. Think he would be better off staying with us another year but so be it. It is the the way things go in this new era. Here today, gone tomorrow.

It looks like Green had six years of eligibility. How did he ever pull that off?

I am wondering if entering the portal is always leaving the team. Of course if he is blown away with the dollars and gets to play in a packed stadium, why not?
If Hofstra came up with a semi competitive offer might he stay?
What I liked most about Edmead is he played with no fear. You cannot teach that. Tremendous Freshman poise. A winner.

Players can withdraw from the portal and return to their teams, but I would guess that Hofstra's ability to counter offer with enough money would have probably been discussed before Edmead chose to enter the portal. And the fact that he hit the portal as soon as it officially opened rather than waiting until say, next week, tells me it was a pretty easy decision for him to go.

The transfer portal system brings out the worst in people. Example: Preston Edmead. Money talks, loyalty walks.

If you are a freshman in college and Michigan offers you 500k to come play for them this might be your best payday as a basketball player.
You get paid even if you tear up your knee and never fully recover. Basketball is his passion and if somebody can pay him big time dollars even his current coaches will advise the move.
What will be painful for Hofstra fans is to see him wearing a St Johns jersey next year. Remember he prefers to stay local so his family and friends can easily watch him play.
On the other hand, remember how many of us thought Hofstra basketball would suffer losing Arunguren last year among others. Speedy and crew did a fine job of assembling a nice team. Edmead exceeded all expectations but the surrounding cast bought in and some good players did not get much exposure. I now have confidence that the coaches will reload and the current culture will excel.
