That said, I'm pretty confident that state funds cannot be used for NIL funding.

Stony Brook's biggest donor, Jim Simons, passed away last year. In 2023, his foundation announced a gift of $500 million over several years. He probably also left money to Stony Brook in his will, so the school will benefit further from his generosity for many years to come:

NIL and the freedom to transfer without sitting out a year are killing mid-majors. That is why we have to "re-recruit" our current players (or at least the ones we want to keep).

No Endowmwnt money goes to NIL. Schools don't fund NIL, donors and sponsors do... St John's has a big NIL donor, he owns Vitamin Water and he's a big horse racing guy as is Pitino....he's the reason why Pitino came to St. John's and it has paid off to all.

JoJo sad but true for all the big boys...something needs to be done but probably nothing will happen.

Not really.
R.J. Luis is 11th here, but no other St. John's player is in the Top 100 and there are a lot of players in the Top 100 that are on teams that aren't doing anything close to what St. John's is doing this season:

Now, if you want to talk paying Pitino vs. other coaches they could have settled for and paid less, and how that has helped take St, John's to where they are today, that's fair.
But just as with the pros, yes, money helps, but it doesn't guarantee success and success, although more difficult to attain without money, can still be achieved through a lot of other factors.
