But more importantly Towson is at #6 and Charleston with a 5-1 record comes from out of nowhere to #8 and Iona now #11. Soooo how did Charleston who was not ranked move to #8 explain that one to me??
Charleston beat Virginia Tech who was receiving more votes in the regular top 25 polls than St Mary's. So they have a better win than IF Hofstra had beat St Mary's. This isn't rocket science. They also aren't receiving votes in the regular top 25's poll while Virginia Teach still is. So again they beat Virginia Tech who is ranked better than Charleston while we beat Iona who is ranked better than us in this poll.

So if Hofstra Beat St Mary's you probably would expect us to be ranked right around that #8 spot. Maybe a spot above or below Charleston depending on how much the voters valued Virginia Tech over St Mary's verse Hofstra being hypothetically undefeated. And Yes St Mary's probably would still be ranked above Hofstra in this scenario; probably right around the 4 or 5 spot.
Look this was part of Wags argument that you don't move up numerous places based on one win. They didn't beat N Carolina and I know they have a good record against teams that were in the NCAA tourney last year but u can't assume those teams r good teams this year. So they go from not being ranked to #8?? This just seems to contradict the argument Wags was using that's my point. I get they should have been in the top 25 mid major poll but that high?
The gripe about Hofstra at the time was: why weren't they make up more than 16 spots and pass Iona simply because of a close home win over Iona?

The complaint about the move from unranked to #8 for Charleston is: why should they move up so much after wins over Richmond, Davidson, Colorado State, and Virginia Tech.

It's pretty obvious why those two things aren't comparable and are heavily in Charleston's favor comparing the two.

Charleston came back to win 74-72 hosting Kent State, who entered 5-0. Kent State made a 3 to go up 3 with 3:26 left and did not score after that. Towson is at Charleston on CBS Sports Network on February 23, which is the second-to-last day of games before the CAA Tournament.

Thought this thread would appreciate this tweet. Like it or not this is how polls work. It’s not a conspiracy against ranking Hofstra above Iona.

New Mid Major poll. https://www.collegeinsider.com/mens-mid-major-top-25 Charleston 3, Towson 7, Iona 15 and we're still 17.

17 sounds about right. We have not had any big wins (I wouldn't call Iona a big win), and we've been inconsistent. Let's beat GMU, Purdue, UMass, and/or South Florida. Winning two or three of those games will make a statement.

Really don't think we have much of a chance to beat Purdue. They're ranked #5 6-0 and are coming off a statement win over Duke. They beat Gonzaga by 18 and Duke by 19. God only knows what they're going to do to us. All these other games are winnable games.

Speaking of Purdue, here is a short piece on the Boilermakers' 7-4 center:

I see GMU as winnable, South Florida is terrible and we should play Mass tough. As for Purdue, they are in another League right now. Hope we can survive that one and move on.

#4 Arizona lost by 15 at Utah tonight, so if Purdue beats Minnesota at home on Sunday (which they should), they should be #4 when they host Hofstra.

It won't matter much how they're ranked it could be ugly especially if we go into that game without any of our starters especially Estrada.

HU ranked 19 in the latest mid major poll slowly working our way out of the top 20. Charleston 2 and Towson 6. Charleston may be the team to beat in the CAA not Towson.

HU will be fortunate just to be included in a three-team race with those two. They are kind of on the outside looking in at the moment, but can get there. Work to do to get to the levels of Charleston and Towson and seriously compete with them by the time early March in DC arrives. Plus, we'll see if Charleston and Towson can maintain the levels they're at now and if they don't fall off some.

UNCW also emerging as a contender...they have a few pretty good wins.

Yeah, was going to mention them as a fourth team too because of those wins, but until we see what they do in CAA play, especially against Charleston, Towson, and Hofstra, I think they may be at the top of the next tier down in the CAA.
That said, they weren't supposed to much last year and surprised with an outstanding regular season in league play, so definitely have to keep an eye on them as well. This is not going to be easy for HU this year. Plenty of tough competition at the top. As usual in this conference, an NCAA tourney bid will have to be earned, whoever gets it. HU needs to stay healthy and needs to gel with the old + new pieces and then hope things fall into place as we move through conference play.

Agree Wags. We came out of the box pretty strong but the loss to George Mason hurt and now we're dealing with some injuries...maybe this brutal non-conference schedule, especially with so few home games was not the way to go for us...time will tell.

They beat Jacksonville -- which was coming off an 11-point win at VCU -- by 28 today.

With our latest bad loss we worked ourselves out of the top 25 now Charleston is 2 St Mary's 3(with 3 losses) Towson is 9 and Iona is 8.

So, for all the fretting about here, the pollsters were proven right not to put too much stock in HU's lone, narrow home win over Iona at the time.

What a difference a week makes and a win over a top 20 opponent. We're now #19 and Charleston is #3 UNCW #14.
