Is Northeastern that bad? Or are we a much better team when Cooks is on the floor?

We won 72-50 to be under by 19.5. We shot twos and free throws well, and threes below average. We made 9 of 11 free throws, as we continued to not attempt many, and we probably still have the fewest missed free throws per game of 358 teams.HofstraMathew wrote: The over/under is 141.5 so the best bet on this game with our defense might be to just bet the over and stay away from that spread.
Their 8 game losing streak is their longest since they lost 9 from December 29, 2010 through January 22, 2011. That year January 22 was a Saturday, and they won a home game on January 24. They host UNCW on January 24, so they have to hope January 24 is the day to end losing streaks.stuball888 wrote: Is Northeastern that bad? Or are we a much better team when Cooks is on the floor?
Stu I think you can answer that question yourself but probably a lot of both. They have guys returning from injuries so they were playing out of sync but they don't score a lot and realistically is this a very close game without Cooks on the floor definitely not a blow out. Cooks can be huge.stuball888 wrote:Is Northeastern that bad? Or are we a much better team when Cooks is on the floor?
So was just curious is this the least amount of points we have held a D1 opponent to Evan??EvanJ wrote:We won 72-50 to be under by 19.5. We shot twos and free throws well, and threes below average. Cooks led all scorers with 19. He started 5-5 before making 2 of 8 to finish 7-13. He played 25 minutes off the bench, so he didn't play almost the whole game. He had 2 assists, and led all players with 3 steals. Estrada started 0-6 before improving to 6-14, and he shot threes 2-7 by making his last 2. His first free throw was short, and he made 2 of 3. He tied for the most rebounds on either team with 8, and tied for the most assists on either team with 3. Dubar scored 7 in the first 5:32 and didn't score again until a three-point play 29:18 later. He shot 4-6 including threes 1-2, and free throws 1-1, to score 10. Iyiola scored 9 by making 3 twos and 3 free throws without a miss. His 4 rebounds were way below his average, and he split playing time with he and Simmons playing 20 minutes each. We were +4 when Iyiola played, +16 when Simmons played, and +2 in the 21 seconds with both of them on the bench. Simmons scored 6 by shooting 3-4, and missed his only free throw, which was the first of a one-and-one, and his first attempt of the season. He had 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and our only block. Burgess made 1 of 2 twos and 1 of 2 threes to score 5. Both of his makes and one of his misses were in the last 3:00. We were pnly =3 in his 16 minutes, and he had 1 rebound and no other nonzero statistics. Silverio made a three 2:27 in, but scored 2 the rest of the game to finish with 5. He shot 2-7 including threes 1-5. He tied Estrada for the most rebounds on either team with 8, which was the first time in his career he led us in rebounds. Ray shot 1-5 including threes 0-4 to score 2, and he only attempted 1 shot in the second half. He played 23 minutes and didn't do much else with no rebounds, 1 assist, and 2 steals. Carlos did not shoot in 8 minutes, and tied Estrada, Dubar, and two Northeastern players for the most assists with 3.
Northeastern's only double-digit scorers were Jahmyl Telfort and Chris Doherty. Telfort scored 11, but shot 4-13 and committed 5 turnovers. Doherty shot 5-10 to score 10, and led them with 7 rebounds. Coleman Stucke had 7 points and 7 rebounds. Shaquille Walters shot 2-9 to score 5, and Telfort passed him for the team lead in points per game.
We had 4 more assists, 2 fewer fouls, and 3 fewer turnovers. Our ratio of 15 assists to 11 turnovers was good, but worse than our average. We dominated points off turnovers 20 to 9, and fast break points 11 to 2. We had 1 more rebound. Northeastern had 5 more offensive rebounds, but only 2 more second chance points. Because Cooks didn't start, we had more bench points 27 to 15. Each team had 30 points in the paint. We had more steals 7 to 3. Here are the shooting percentages with us, them:
Field goals: 28/56 = .500, 21/60 = .350
Twos: 21/33 = .636, 15/36 = .417
Threes: 7/23 = .304, 6/24 = .250
Free throws: 9/11 = .818, 2/5 = .400
Estrada kept our lead in points per game with 16.4 that is a slightly lower exact value than before the game. Cooks went up from 16.1 to 16.3. Ray fell from 15.5 to 14.7.

We led 34-23 at halftime, and each team scored 4 more in the second half than in the first half.
https://gohofstra.com/news/2022/1/22/me ... -rout.aspx is our recap that answers that. It was our fewest points allowed to a D1 team since we beat Drexel 61-43 in the CAA Quarterfinals on March 8, 2020, and the 2020 Quarterfinals and Semifinals might be the last times I ever go to Hofstra game considering where I am now.triplec2195 wrote: So was just curious is this the least amount of points we have held a D1 opponent to Evan??
And, of course, 11+11=22, and this game was on the first 22 of '22 (1/22/22). Not sure what any of this means, but you started with the 11 and 11, so... loljoeg1 wrote:We outscored Northeastern by exactly 11 points each half. That has to be incredibly rare, to outscore an opponent by the same amount of points each half, much less by exactly 11 points! Fascinating! I wonder if we have ever been outscored by the same amount of points each half, whether or not the margin was 11?

This year, yes, by far. But ever? Definitely not. Remember, we had Pecora as the head coach for nine years, with a lot of rock fights over that time.triplec2195 wrote: So was just curious is this the least amount of points we have held a D1 opponent to Evan??
So, looking it up real quickly, Pecora's penultimate season as HU's coach, 2008-09, sure enough, HU was down 17-15 at the half and won, 54-44. HU also beat Fordham, 60-40, that year.Wags wrote:This year, yes, by far. But ever? Definitely not. Just off the top of my head, I remember a Hofstra home game during that era against Manhattan in which I think the Jaspers were held to 44 (the final was something like 52-44) and I think there was another home game against William & Mary that was something like 17-15 at halftime, in which I think W&M might've been held in the 40s. I think there may have been others too.
UNCW with a big gut-check win to get to 5-0 in CAA play. I asked after they went 4-0 with the 3-pointer to win at JMU if it was time to start taking UNCW seriously or if they'd fall back to Earth. I expected the latter and considered Towson the team to beat in the CAA then. After today, I have no choice but to say that at least for now, UNCW is very surprisingly the team to beat.joeg1 wrote:What do we root for? Fantastic!EvanJ wrote:Our previous game where both halves had the same margin was a 73-71 loss hosting Delaware on January 23, 2020. The first half score was 40-26, and the second half score was 33-19. The previous time we won with the same margin in each half was a 90-58 win at Towson on January 2, 2016. Each half was 45-29.
I remember that 90-58 game, and while many were rightly talking about the easy win and HU playing so well, I was thinking about the 45-29 in each half because that's probably one of the more unlikely things you'll ever see in a game - not just that each half was the same, but as we know, normally, teams up 16 at the break might win by less than that or pad their lead only a little bit and win by 20 or 22, or so. Rare that it would've been +16 for them each half and on top of that, the exact same score in each half. Imagine the prop bet payout on something like that!joeg1 wrote:Fantastic!EvanJ wrote:Our previous game where both halves had the same margin was a 73-71 loss hosting Delaware on January 23, 2020. Perfect. That's all people need to know to sell more tix (shhh, don't mention that NU is 0-7 in the CAA). lolJojogunne wrote:At 6 p.m. ABC channel 7 news showed a couple of plays from the game and mentioned that Hofstra has beaten the three top teams in the CAA preseason poll.
