.... and then Cornell gives up a home run to the first batter she faces. Long balls have been her biggest weakness all season.

Gave up two more HRs, now down 4-2 in the second inning.

Cornell lasted 1 2/3. Hofstra scored 2 in the third to tie it and James Madison took the lead with 1 in the third. Hofstra hit a grand slam to go up 8-5 with no out in the fourth, with two of the baserunners reaching by being hit. Payton Buresch was 22nd with a 0.98 ERA before today. With no out in the fourth, Hofstra scored the most runs James Madison has allowed in regulation. James Madison allowed 9 in an extra inning loss. Buresch was taken out after allowing 14 baserunners in 3 1/3.

Yeah, this is NOT the pitching matchup any of us expected. Interested to see who starts game 2 for both of these teams.

JMU wins game 1 with a walk-off home run in the 7th, their 6th of the day. What an awful pitching performance, certainly not one that should've come from a top 25 team. 0 adjustments to their batters.

Same story in game 2 so far. We've got nothing.

Hofstra has now given up 10 home runs on the day, and they're not out of the 5th inning of game 2.

Hofstra lost 6-3. James Madison scored 15 runs with two-thirds of them coming from batters. Does the NCAA define winning and losing pitchers differently than MLB? Dandola is charged with a loss with 0 runs allowed, which is impossible in MLB. In MLB a pitcher can get a blown save by allowing inherited runners to score but cannot get a loss that way.

Crazy our worst nightmare realized here. We need to regroup today in a big way!

I stunk in sports, but I can influence statistics without playing. Here's an e-mail I sent last night:

Subject: How Is The Losing Softball Pitcher Determined?

In Game 2 today, Sophie Dandola got a loss without allowing a run. That is impossible in MLB. MLB pitchers who let inherited runners score but do not allow of their own runs can get blown saves but not losses. What is the NCAA definition of what makes a pitcher get a loss?

to me
Hi __,

Thank you for catching that. The rules for determining wins and losses are actually very different for NCAA softball than MLB (there are inning minimums, etc.) but in this case, Dandola should not have been given the loss. I will let James Madison know, as they scored the game.

Thanks again!

The Newsday article about Cornell and Dandola was in today's Newsday. Do you think newspapers should put stories online before in print when the stories are not about current news that people want to know as soon as possible?

Hofstra trails 5-2 in the top of the sixth.

Kate Gordon homers with 2 out B7 to tie game

JMU leaves 2 runners on - going to T8
HU doesn't score T8 - leaves lead run on 3b
Madison leaves bases loaded - as Gordon (who homered to tie the game in B6 - grounds into FC) - on to T9
HU down in order - K, F8, K
JMU doesn't score - one out walk, with 2 out diving catch of line drive by 2b
T10 - 2 1b's and 2b by Petra puts HU up 2 - 0 out

Good gals up 8-6 in the top of the 10th!

.... and then the first 4 jmu batters reach base and tie the game. What an awful pitching performance, again.

No longer first place in the CAA, and very likely no longer ranked. Had multiple chances to win in the 7th and 10th today, but just horrible performances all-around couldn't get it done. Can't even use the excuse that our pitchers are young, considering JMU's are the same ages. Earlier in the game, HU Softball tweeted that they hit their record 58th home run of the season, seems like they gave up that many just in this series alone.

How in the world did UNCW and Charleston beat JMU?
