Game 7 - Detroit Mercy, 11/27/21 2 PM EST

Post by Jojogunne »

Winless Detroit Mercy (0-4) is next on the schedule. The Titans have been on the road since the season started. Their closest game was a 6-point loss @ Louisville:

You know things are bad when every thread starts to focus on things other than the game. HU really needs to start winning.

So, a winless team vs supposedly a really good 4 loss team :P . Detroit is currently bottom of the Horizon - picked to finish midpack. If HU really is better than their record says, and has any aspirations to be something, then I would expect HU to own this game on their home floor. The Titans are in desperate need of a win, so I certainly don't expect them to lay down. They haven't been a very good program in recent years though. Let's see how HU shows up after needing to be taught to play every game properly just 6 games in.

And they play NU next, so we'll get to see how these teams compare against a common opponent back to back.

This should definitely be a winnable game as most prognosticators have us something like 10 point favorites...then again, you never know who on Hofstra will show up, who's healthy, who's not, haha.

It could be that Iyiola is back in uniform. Just saying don't have any info. but 10 days seemed to have come and passed. They have a Cooks like guard in Antoine Davis who scores 20 ppg. Watch out for him we need to keep him from having a career day here.

Very good guard for sure. He will likely get his. They have little else though. HU should win, but we know this program and the "shoulda's". I have little excitement right now for this team based on the downward trend and red flags I've seen. Win at least 3 of these next 4, better yet go 4 for 4, and my interest will rise again.

I see nonexistent leadership from Ray or Cooks to take command of this group, so if they lose 2-4 and Speedy will be in danger of 'losing' this team. Let's see if they're going to get serious about their season or not.

And spare me the OOC doesn't matter nonsense. That garbage mindset is exactly how HU gets into situations where they do nothing or bomb in the end. It all matters. Time to see some quality play and wins, especially at home.

HU a 7.5 to 8 point favorite over UDM. Also, KenPom: HU #143, UDM # 218 and Massey: HU #143, UDM #235

Should be a relatively easy win if they come out with purpose and play 40 minutes. Hopefully some people will show up and make some noise that would also be a plus.

Noah Waterman played 12 scoreless minutes in one game. He's from Savannah, which is north of Interstate 90 between Syracuse and Rochester.

Davis is going to get his, the key is just to not let him do so efficiently. On our side, let's actually get drive to the basket and get to the line a bit.

Yes wouldn't mind seeing that that's how our NCAA team used to win games but be careful who goes to the foul line. No Burgess please and Cramer well he's a work in progress.

We lead 57-33. Silverio scored 22 in the first half. He made his first 6 field goals, with 5 of them threes, before his only miss was a two. He made 1 two and 2 free throws. Our record for threes in a game is 8, and the CAA record is 10. That was done four times, and the first player to do that was George Mason's Dre Smith on January 19, 2008. He is the only CAA player to make 10 without missing. Smith wasn't a star, and he averaged 8.4 points that season.

Antoine Davis scored 5 in the last two minutes to be the second leading scorer with 11, and he made 4 of 12 field goals. The other double-digit scorer was Cooks, who shot 4-6 and scored 10. Ray scored 8 and only attempted 5 field goals with 3 made. Dubar scored 8. He made all three field goals including one three, but shot free throws 1-5. Other than Dubar, we shot free throws 5-5, and Detroit shot 3-3. Estrada had 4 points, led us with 3 rebounds, and led all players with 5 assists. Burgess scored 3 from a three-point play with 34 seconds left. Cramer played only 9 minutes, and he committed 1 foul, so that wasn't why he didn't play more. He made his only field goal and scored 2, with 1 rebound. Madut Alec scored 7 and led all players with 6 rebounds.

I was typing while you posted. I don't have a way of finding out what our record or the CAA record is for points in a half. The NCAA record will be way above that, so I'm not checking. As I posted, we should focus on Silverio's threes.

Detroit had more rebounds, 12 to 11. According to the Sports-Reference College Basketball Play Index, from 2010-2011 to before today we played three games in which both teams had 24 or fewer rebounds. We won all three games, which were 86-72 hosting Charleston on January 19, 2019; 92-72 hosting North Carolina A&T on November 14, 2018; and 76-67 at Northeastern on January 8, 2011. We were on pace to score 114 and be outrebounded, which was done 23 times from 2010-2011 to yesterday., and never by or against a CAA team. 13 of the 23 times went at least one overtime, and 8 went at least three overtimes.

We shot field goals 21-29 (.724), but Hofstra's Guide doesn't give our team field record for field goal percentage in a game.

Edit: The lead went down to 72-63. Antoine Davis has 14 in the second half to lead all scorers with 25. Silverio has 2 fouls and no field goal attempts in the second half.

Edit: Silverio made his seventh three without a miss to go up double-digits and give him 25 points.

Edit: With 10:40 left, Silverio committed an offensive foul for his fourth foul, and was subbed out, so it will be hard for him to reach the CAA record of ten threes.

Edit: We're on a 7-0 run to lead 79-63.

Edit: We're on a 17-4 run to go up 89-67. Detroit has made over half of their field goals, half of their threes, all of their free throws, has 1 more rebounds, and trails by 22 with 6:34 left!

We won 98-84. Silverio made 8 of 10 threes to tie our record with 8 threes made, which he shares with Brian Bernardi and Jalen Ray. He made 9 of 13 field goals and scored 28. Cooks made 8 of 13 field goals, scored 20, tied for our lead with 5 rebounds, and had 5 assists. Estrada had 16 points, 5 rebounds, and 9 assists. Ray scored 15. Dubar scored 0 to give us five players in double-digits. He made all 4 field goals, but made 1 of 5 free throws and fouled out. Cramers made 3 of 4 field goals and had 6 points and 3 rebounds. Burgess had a three-point play and no other shots in 18 minutes, and he had 3 assists. Carlos played the last 3:41, and the only thing he did was 1 foul. Antoine Davis had 39 points, 7 rebounds, and 8 assists. He had 28 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists in the second half. Madut Akic had the only double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Detroit made half of their 22 twos and 15 of 29 threes to shoot field goals .510, threes .517, and free throws 1.000 (17-17).

We shot field goals 35-56 (.625) and free throws 15-24 (.625). It was the first time from 1998-1999 to now that our field goal percentage and free throw percentage were equal, with the possible exception of 2001-2002 that I do not have statistics for. On December 31, 2014 at Central Conneticut State, we shot field goals .532 and free throws .533.

According to the Sports-Reference College Basketball Play Index:

1. Detroit became the first team from 2010-2011 to now to make at least 15 threes, make more than half of their threes, and make at least 17 free throws without a miss. The previous team to do that was Utah Valley in a 82-76 win at Chicago State on January 23, 2016; so Detroit became the first team in that time to do that in a loss.

2. Antoine Davis became the player from 2010-2011 to now to score at least 39 points, make at least 8 threes, make more than half of his threes, make at least 11 free throws, have at least 7 rebounds, and have at least 8 assists.

3. We had 23 rebounds and 21 assists. It was the second time from 2010-2011 to now that we had 23 or fewer rebounds and at least 21 assists. The previous time was a 81-69 win hosting Siena of February 18, 2021, and the date means it was a BracketBuster.

Good win, Omar with a big-time prove it game. Hate letting Davis torch us like that but that is kind of his thing. The team is still a work in progress, but considering there's no Iyiola, have to be happy with it.

Step 1 of 4 - will take the W, although it was far from great - some may not like this, but I still don’t think this team is very good. But I’m giving them this four game stretch to show something. Detroit is bad, but Davis a great guard - lit up HU today. This game was way too close, but they won.

A stat fill game on O, poor D.

Congrats to Silverio… but thank goodness he didn’t break the record. That’s all we need. This is the worst thing that could happen, he plays lights out one game and fools himself and the staff and the fanbase that he’ll play like that again - he won’t. He needs to play less, sorry. He has cost more games than he’s won. He owes HU this performance and a lot more. I really hope Speedy doesn’t keep green lighting him - his shots were again way too deep and he has no business shooting like that on this team with his skill level. Gonna suck when he does this again next game and clanks them like normal. I have no interest in his game.

Amazing to see a team play such scrappy D in some ways and allow a team to shoot 50% - bad omen. Still no roster so they get gassed every second half.

Will take the W against the worst team they’ll face in this stretch, now we’ll see what they do against a quality one.
