Hofstra Baseball 2018

Post by EvanJ »

Hofstra lost their first 2, but is now on a 5 game winning streak. In 2017, Hofstra won 14 games with a longest winning streak of 2. In 2016, Hofstra won 15 games with a longest winning streak of 5. Hofstra's last winning streak of more than 5 games was a 9 game winning streak from March 24 through April 5, 2013. 2013 was our third best winning percentage out of 16 complete seasons in the CAA. Our next games are on Saturday against Mount Saint Mary's of Maryland and Maryland-Baltimore County. Maryland-Baltimore County is hosting the tournament, and we play them a second time on Sunday.

Just a few weeks after Seamus Brazill threw the first no hitter in program history, he and John Rooney just combined for the second one!

So we are now 7-2 on the year. Yes the competition has not been the best but I am looking forward to this season. When John Russo first became coach here I noticed that our ballplayers were mostly between 5ft8 to 6ft0 tall. We were small. John told me we will get better and bigger. Well if JAM is looking for a front line for the team look no further than the baseball team. Give you size and position of several players
(P) Seamus Brazill 6ft9 260
(P)John Rooney 6ft5 225
(P)Matt Weissherir 6ft6 265
(P)Zach Altieri 6ft4 215
(OF)Ted CIllis 6ft2 215
(C)Vito Friscia 6ft3 225
Not bad size for baseball players or basketball players either

Despite the wins, we have a bad RPI of 234th out of 297, and the second worst in the CAA ahead of Towson. We have the third easiest schedule. The CAA is 15th out of 31 in the Conference RPI. In the NCAA's RPI through March 8, we're behind four winless teams.

That’s because of our SOS. So we have to see how the pitching holds up against better competition

Two ways to look at it. First our SOS is not strong. So we are doing it against weak competition. The second way is we are dominating this weak competition where in the past we were winning but not like we are now. The jury is out till we start playing conference games.

Fair enough, but it’s still nice to see the improvement from previous years. Last year and years prior, the schedule was also pretty weak, but our pitching was not good, for the most part. In the past, there were games with good pitching, but more often than not it was bad. It’s a good sign that it’s been consistently good this season, regardless of the opponent. Also helps with who our pitching coach is, although he’s been with the team for the past few seasons.

Enjoy Haybian for another year. after that he is gone. His contract runs out and I doubt that Rabinowitz will empty the piggy bank to keep him

Maybe Stu - i don't know what the guys plans are, but he is a local Suffolk County guy. Has roots going back many years on LI. Maybe he wants to stay local. Maybe he's eying the SBU head coach position? As far as baseball goes, that would be a step up for him.

If he is willing to move, you are 100% correct. He would have no trouble hooking up with a high end program as pitching coach, or even a solid mid level program as head coach.

Hofstra taking on Delaware at home today. Up 7-0 in the sixth, with John Rooney throwing a one hitter so far. Just a few scouts here to see him...

Wow, they're making it very obvious and this performance, Rooney doesn't even seem fazed by it. Now up 9-0 headed to the 9th.

Hofstra's only lead was a 5-4 win after a 3 run walkoff home run by Rob Weissheier to sweep Charleston, who was in first in the CAA before the series. Hofstra is now 17-15. They're 7-8 in the CAA with remaining series against first place Northeastern and the Virginia teams who are the bottom two.

Baseball wins 1-0 against W&M. We are 8-8 in conference. 12-9 should get us in the CAA tourney

John Rooney faced 2 more than the minimum in the shutout win.

Hofstra won't go 12-9 in the CAA because there are 9 teams and 24 CAA games each. There are 21 CAA games each in Softball.
