MBB Game 11 Old Westbury, Dec. 10 (Wed) 7 PM

Post by Jojogunne »

Finally, we're back home!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFOi0pf ... rt_radio=1

Hofstra alum Bernard Tomlin, one of several talented transfers Coach Roger Gaeckler brought to Hofstra in the early 1970s, is in his 19th year as coach of the 1-6 Panthers.

Bernard played one year at Utah before coming to Hofstra. According to his Old Westbury bio, Bernard holds the Hofstra record for field goals made in a single game (20) and was the season scoring leader and free throw leader in 1974-75. The New Orleans Jazz drafted him in the sixth round in 1976, but I don't think he ever played in the NBA.

Because this will be our first home game since Coach Gaeckler passed, I'm hoping there will be a moment of silence or some other tribute.

MSG, FloCollege and WRHU will cover the game.

*****

After Old Westbury, we have three more games in December:

Dec 13 (Sat) @ Syracuse 4 PM

Dec 21 (Sun) Quinnipiac 1 PM (Tom Pecora returns)

Dec 29 (Mon) Campbell 7 PM (CAA play begins)

I still like the idea of an RG design in front of the HU bench.

Hofstra will be honoring Roger at the Old Westbury game. Fitting as Bernard is one of his former players.
I was at the game where Bernard hit 20 FGs, is was against Oral Roberst in Tulsa Oklahoma. No 3 point Fgs in those days.
He only took and made 2 free throws for a total of 42 points.
Oral Roberts was beating him up yet there was only one foul!!!
Bernard coud have been an NBA player but a knee injury slowed him down considerably.
He is a first class acr...also coached Stony Brook men's basketball for quite awhile!

Yes he was a very good shooter remember him playing back in the PFC after you left the game your back was aching sitting on bleacher seats. I also remember losing that game against Oral Roberts.

Just looked him up. He was drafted by the New Orleans Jazz (6th round, 94th pick) in the 1976 NBA draft. Local product from Malverne.

During the first of his two years at Hofstra (after playing at Utah), he averaged 19.8 ppg on 48.1% shooting.

Good FT shooter - 87% (100/115) over his two years at Hofstra. If they had called the fouls you mentioned, he may have had over 50 points in that game at Oral Roberts.

Wags, he definitly should have had more than 50 that night. He was getting beaten up every time he had the ball.
I wish I still had it but the play by play recorder for Oral Roberts was actually editorializing in the document that he was getting KILLED!

https://gohofstra.com/news/2025/12/8/me ... esday.aspx is our preview titled "Finally Home Again; Hofstra Hosts SUNY Old Westbury On Wednesday."

https://s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/side ... game11.pdf is our Game Notes.

https://defiantlydutch.blogspot.com/202 ... tbury.html is Jerry Beach's "I'll Be Quirky: Old Westbury."

https://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=612055 will have statistics. Before it has lineups, it has rosters. It used to have our roster have 15 players, but now it has 13. Carlos Lopez (who will miss the season due to injury) and Trey Boyd III. Boyd III is a junior who transferred after playing for two non-Division I schools including Pace last season, when he made the Northeast 10's Third Team. Adelphi is in the Northeast 10. SUNY Old Westbury has 14 players.

https://www.flohoops.com/live/214397 has video for people like me who do not get MSG and pay for Flo.

The offensive did not have a good first couple of minutes, but now we lead 27-8. Patterson has 10 points and 7 rebounds in 7 minutes off the bench. His only miss was a free throw. Davis has 7 points and is getting a rest. Edmead has 5 points and 2 assists. Onuetu has 6 points and 3 rebounds. DeCady and Sunday have not shot. Roberts shot 1-3. Wills has not played, so he could still be sick. One of you said you him wearing a mask. As I typed, Davis re-entered, and made a basket to make 9 points and make the score 31-8.

Edit: Roberts made his second three to go up 40-10, and there is 2:51 left in the half. After Onuetu missed 2 free throws, Patterson battled and got an offensive rebound, which led to a 3 by Roberts. Patterson might have a double-double by halftime, and Edmead is on pace for a double-double with 5 points and 5 assists.

Again, why does the NCAA count these games? If you have to fill the calendar, if you want to bring an old friend like Tomlin here, great. But let it be an exhibition only. Can't blame Hofstra at all. Everyone does it. But the NCAA should have never let these games count.

We lead 47-10 at halftime.

Edit: We lead 69-19. We're shooting field goals better than free throws. Old Westbury is shooting field goals 7-42, and free throws 1-2. We have more free throw attempts 15 to 2, and with each team having 2 second half fouls, it is possible that neither team will reach the bonus.

Edit: We lead 73-21. Our five starters and Patterson are on the bench. Davis leads us with 22 minutes, but Roberts will pass him soon. Wills has 10 minutes, so he is not too sick to play. We have used twelve players, and we might not use anybody else this season. We committed a lane violation, and Old Westbury committed one 2:07 later. It is very rare for teams to have lane violations that close together.

We won 92-23, which broke our margin of victory record by 1. We beat St. Joseph's (Long Island) by 68 last season. Last season we beat Old Westbury 89-62, so the big difference tonight was defense. Old Westbury shot field goals .157. We shot field goals .563, which was better than both team's free throw percentage (.500 for Old Westbury and .412 for us). We had twelve players play at least 10 minutes, and I wonder if we ever did that before. Half of our attempts were threes.

In the three Analytics statistics I give, ten or eleven of our players were better than Old Westbury's top player. In efficiency, Patterson led with 26, and Edmead and Roberts tied for second with 16. In game score, Patterson led with 17.6, Roberts was second with 13.3, and Edmead was third with 11.1. In net points, Roberts led with 16.7, Davis was second with 13.0, and Patterson was third with 9.6. Roberts made 5 of 11 threes, but 1 of 7 twos, and 0 of 2 free throws. In 10 minutes, Amir Williams had 4 points, 3 rebounds, and led us with 3 steals, which tied an Old Westbury player.

South Florida defeated Charleston 81-75, so Charleston covered as a 13.5 point underdog.

To steal a phrase from the great Warner Wolf:
"If you took Old Westbury +65...You lost!"

Unfortunate that we put this beat down on such a class guy in Bernard Tomlin. Shame we can't come up with a more competitive games at home.
The OOC home schedule this year is a joke.

Just for a local comparison...

-Iona with their 1st yr no college experience head coach has hosted us, fordham, Princeton, bryant (last night) and is playing St John's at msg this weekend

-last night alone in northeast mid majors you had Merrimack at Princeton, Maine at BU, New Haven at NJIT, FDU at Fordham, Colgate at St Bonnaventure

I dont understand how we cant get any even low level D1 team for a game like last night instead of wasting time with a bad d3 team
