Other CAA Teams on TV

Post by Wags »

If anyone wants to check out one of HU's conference foes playing in a venue of another of HU's conference foes today...

Temple vs. Elon in the Charleston Classic on ESPNU at 10:30 am (not a typo - very early tip time).

Elon blew a 7 point halftime lead and trails 62-48.

https://caasports.com/calendar.aspx?path=mbball has the CAA schedule including what games are on TV and where to watch online.

James Madison leading Virginia 24-14 at halftime on CBS SportsNetwork.

Nope, not football. The Dukes went on a 22-1 run after trailing 10-2. The Cavs missed their first 13 3s before finally hitting one just before halftime.

Caught the last 10 minutes of this one. Towson was impressive, only down 33-32 at the half and although they weren't going to win, they hung tough down the stretch, losing 85-74 eight days after then-top-ranked Duke lost on the same floor by five.

Biggest regular-season CAA game of the year is underway on CBS SportsNetwork.

2nd-place Towson leads 1st-place UNCW at Trask, 9-7, at the first MTO.

Yup, and it was packed and loud at Trask, and Towson silenced them. They were in control and just gradually grew the lead more and more from the first half and over the second half.

This is why I've been saying for weeks around here that Towson is the team to beat in the CAA and the one Hofstra has to worry about the most, and that it was a matter of time before UNCW fell back to Earth. Towson has a lot to contend with -- an inside game with Thompson, 3-point shooters (which is a big new element for them this year), and the usual toughness, rebounding, defense, and physicality they seem to have every year.

Tonight's result is good for Hofstra. Assuming Towson is the best team (as I believe they are), you could say maybe it's easier to pick a team off like that early (like in the semis) rather than in the finals. But I think if you are going to beat the best to be the best, you want as much confidence going into that matchup as possible - Hofstra in the finals would obviously make them more confident than playing in the semis, so I think it's best to avoid the best team for as long as possible.

Had UNCW won tonight, they'd have all but wrapped up the 1 seed. But now it gets interesting. UNCW and Towson are tied in the loss column with three L's each, and Hofstra is only a game back in the loss column of each with four losses. 2 seed or 3 seed doesn't matter if seeds hold to the semis, it's just which uniform you're wearing. But HU does have an outside shot at the 1 seed now. Tonight's outcome also makes it a lot more realistic that HU would face UNCW in a 2/3 game before taking its chances against Towson in the finals rather than facing Towson in a 2/3 game. A lot still to sort out, but tonight seemingly works in HU's favor. Regardless, if HU meets Towson in the semis or the finals, they'll have to play a lot better than the first two meetings. I think they can (especially since they've been a different team lately than in those two meetings), and they can beat Towson, but right now the Tigers are the class of the CAA. No surprise for those who saw how good they were against HU twice and knowing that UNCW was probably playing a little over their heads when they were 9-0 (just 3-3 since).

Would be interesting if UNCW finishes 5-4 after starting 9-0 and if Hofstra closes 9-0 after starting 5-4.

On SNY earlier tonight, a player with a perfect name to play for Hofstra -- Charles Pride -- hit a game-winning FT with no time left to advance top-seeded Bryant to the NEC finals with a 70-69 win over Mount St. Mary's.

Houston vs. Towson in the Charleston Classic on ESPN2 at 6:30 pm today.

Funny that Towson is playing on Charleston's home floor while Charleston is playing in state a couple hours north.

Charleston blew leads of 34-19 (first half) and 60-53 late. Vermont closed 20-4 over the final 4:23 to win, 73-64.

Charleston (1-2) is under .500 for the first time in 71 games (ended the Covid 2020-21 year 9-10) and for the first time during a normal season in nine years (also 1-2 on 11/20/14).

Charleston (1-3) lost again, this time to Wyoming, 67-60.

The Cougars have take 46% of their shots so far this season from 3, where they are shooting a brutal 18.8% (22-for-117).

Did they catch Hofstraitits?
They are volume shooters and rely on getting offensive rebounds
They play at a very fast pace

Charleston lost to ranked Florida Atlantic, but prior to that two CAA teams won at ranked teams. I am guessing it is the first time that two CAA teams beat ranked teams on the same day, but I do not have a way of finding out without checking season schedules. Drexel won at Villanova, and UNCW got their first win at a ranked team when they won at Kentucky. UNCW's only previous win against a ranked team was in the First Round of the 2002 NCAA Tournament, which was our first season in the CAA.

You guessed correctly (the conference mentioned it that day).
