Game #15 vs Towson

Post by stuball888 »

So what does everyone think the outcome will be I see a life and death struggle as Towson makes adjustments from this past game

Towson is always a physical, gritty type of team, year in and year out. For that reason, probably one of the toughest in the CAA to sweep in a strange scenario like this, beating them one day and having to turn right around to play them the next day. But they did play Mon/Tue and had to travel here while HU was already here those two days after playing last Sat/Sun in Delaware and traveling back. So that may help give HU a slight conditioning edge with HU and TU playing the second of the back-to-back today.

HU was favored by 6 on Saturday. I don't see a line out yet on today's game.

ESPN has us as 6 pt favs again...I'd say that's about right.

If we play with some intensity and get a lead we should be ok...I don't see Towson coming back against us...that's not their style.

Statistics links:

Us at 2:00 P.M.: http://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=318621

JMU at Northeastern at 12:00 P.M.: http://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=319166

Delaware at UNCW at 1:00 P.M.: http://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=319121

Edit: We are starting the same players as yesterday. Towson switched from starting Cam Allen, who averages 2.2 points in 17.1 minutes, to Jason Gibson, who averages 8.9 points in 25.7 minutes.

Edit: https://www.vegasinsider.com/college-ba ... las-vegas/ has a line of 5.5 and over/under of 140.5, which makes 73-67.5. JMU at Northeastern was similar with a line of 5.5 and over/under of 142.5, and that is an upset. JMU led by 14 at halftime and leads 78-70 with 31 seconds left. Delaware leads 37-36 at halftime at UNCW. UNCW was favored by 3. Tyson Walker scored to go down 78-72, and Northeastern called their final timeout with 22 seconds left.

Edit: JMU won 79-72. JMU is 2-1 in the CAA, which is as many wins as when they went 2-16 last season.

Coburn entering the day: 11/37 (29.7%)
Coburn starting from 3 today: 5/6

So almost half as many 3s as the entire season for him to start.

He's now 5/7 from 3 today. Ray also 2/3 from there.

26-17, HU at the 2nd MTO (10:07).

Coburn (18 pts) and Ray (10) have accounted for 28 of HU's 36 points.

36-26, nearing the under-4 MTO, to match the game's biggest lead.

Coburn hits his sixth 3-pointer (on eight attempts) to give him a game-high 21 points and Hofstra the game's biggest lead, 39-28 before the last MTO of the half now, with 2:58 left. Coburn's career-best is 28 points, accomplished twice this year.

Halftime in Hempstead. Coburn (21 pts) has half Hofstra's points. Ray (13 pts) has accounted for 62% of the other half.

42-34, HU. Led by as much as 39-28.

To keep Towson at bay in the second half, HU will have to clean up the defensive glass - half of Towson's first 14 rebs (15 total at the half) were on the offensive glass. Typical Towson team this year as in many years past - their best offense is often a missed shot and getting another opportunity. Fortunately, Second-chance points are even though, 4-4, despite the TU offensive boards.

With his 13 first-half points, Ray now has 1,156 career points and is three shy of Ted Jackson for 28th place in program history.

He was 33/96 = .344 shooting threes this season before today.

Coburn scored 21. He made 6 threes, and is on pace to break the CAA record of 10 shared by William & Mary's Connor Burchfield, Northeastern's Bolden Brace, Georgia State's R.J. Hunter, and George Mason's Dre Smith, who shot 10-10. Brian Bernardi has our record with 8 threes made. We made 9 of 18, so we're on pace to make 18 of 36. Our records are 20 makes and 38 attempts. I checked how rare it is to make at least 15 threes and attempt 5 or fewer free throws. It has happened twelve times this season, including our January 9 loss to Northeastern, and Towson's 89-54 loss to Virginia on November 25, 2020. We got 6 combined points from Kante, Burgess, and Cramer, who average 14.4 points per half. We have only one free throw attempt, which Coburn made. Kante leads us with 3 rebounds. Cramer's only shot was an air ball three. Despite those bad things, we lead 42-34. Towson freshman Darrick Jones Jr. made his first field goal. He entered with 1 point in 4 minutes. He went to Oak Hill Academy.

Correct - I meant CAA games only for the numbers I mentioned.

Not liking this current run - 8-2, Towson, using pressure to rattle HU. Tigers within single digits again at 57-49. Looks like some other past runs we've seen this season. Offense drying up, leading slipping away a bit. They have to stop it soon.

Delaware rallies to beat UNCW on the road, 67-62. Two CAA games, two road wins today. Let's not make that 3-for-3.

57-51, HU with 10:52 left.

Coburn hasn't made a shot since his 7th 3-pointer with 18:46 left. This is what I was afraid of earlier with Coburn and Ray doing the heavy bulk of the scoring.

Huge 3 from Masic from the right wing to end a 13-4 Towson run and help Hofstra breathe a little easier at 62-54 just before the under-8 MTO (7:24) now.

Towson will not go away.

Where is Coburn??? Scoreless since his 7th 3 with 18:46 left. This is what I mean in other threads about him needing to get to the line when teams take the 3 away from him. He was looking to be (and talking about) being more than one-dimensional earlier in the year, but then slips back into just 3s... also a good time to do what I mentioned with Kante, who got a big bucket and a big assist to Cramer down the stretch here.

70-69, HU. Towson ball with :38.6 left and 20 to shoot.

Towson offensive foul with :23.7 left.

1-and-1 for Cramer... rattles in the first... and hits the second... 72-69.

One thing you can say about this team is that they know how to blow a lead. Geez.

I think with a normal schedule, you'd hard more on the blown leads, or near-blown leads. But with these tough back-to-backs, I think you're just happy to escape with Ws.

That said, they do need to work on closing.
