Hofstra's Lawrence C. Levy Wrote That Suburban Voters Are...

Post by EvanJ »

https://www.cnn.com/2020/11/11/opinions ... index.html is titled "These are the gatekeepers who let Biden win." CNN says "Lawrence C. Levy is executive dean of the National Center for Suburban Studies at Hofstra University and a former columnist and editorial writer at Newsday who has covered eight presidential elections. The views expressed in this commentary are his own." Republicans did better than expected in the Senate and House, and Republicans did better than expected in at least the last four Senate elections. Suburban voters switched from supporting Trump 49 percent to 45 percent to supporting Biden 50 percent to 48. Suburban voters in Georgia moved farther left than the national suburban average. Not coincidentally, the Democrats only House seat gain other than two from redistricting in North Carolina is Georgia's District 7. The Democrats now have 6 of 14 House seats in Georgia, which is a higher percentage than they have in states south of Virginia and east of New Mexico. Those states are Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, West Virginia. A far left person a on Twitter said that Democrats in swing districts should support Medical For All, and I told him or her that he or she has been proven wrong by multiple elections. Using FiveThirtyEight's Trump Score of what percent of the time every member voted with Trump, the Republicans with the highest Trump scores lost in 2018 at a higher rate than the Republican average. Nebraska's District 2, which is mostly Omaha, voted for Biden by 6.6 percent and gave him 1 electoral vote in a state that isn't winner take all, while Republican incumbent Don Bacon won by 4.8 percent, meaning his margin was 11.4 percent better than Trump's. Bacon beat Kara Eastman for the second consecutive election. She is far left, and Bacon called her a Bernie Sanders Democrat. In two recent votes, Bacon was one of three Republican and one of seven Republicans to vote with Democrats. CNN has called eight House losses by Democrats, and six were among the 30 percent of Democrats with the lowest Trump scores, meaning that they vote with Trump less often than average Democrats. Other Democrats in that group won by less than expected.

Hofstra is lucky to have Larry and his years of wisdom covering politics. Has done great with Hofstra’s National Center for Suburban Studies.
