Payments to College Athletes

This is an excellent article about how payments to college athletes are changing (destroying?) college sports.

We have already seen how these payments are affecting mid-major programs. But even big schools are feeling the impact, as well-heeled donors divert some of their giving away from college athletic programs and to NIL collectives/star athletes. One unintended consequence: sports that generate little to no revenue will suffer the most:

Yeah a good article showing how money will be earmarked for select players without the normal trickle down effect to other sports. Interesting!

Here's another article about an even seamier scheme involving payments to college athletes:

EDIT: Big League Advantage, the company profiled in this article, has a connection to Alabama's MBB program, and Estrada is in one of the photos.

Towson is going all in on payments to athletes. They're showing this commercial on Flosports today and have a page on their website with a lot of information:

Hofstra needs to get serious about establishing its own NIL collective. There's no reason Towson, which has accomplished less in the CAA than Hofstra, should have a jump start on the Pride with that.

100% here! And don't think it's coincidental Towson has so far been able to keep all their players this offseason

Right! Which goes to show that schools like Towson and Hofstra don't necessarily have to be relegated to being feeder schools in this new NIL era. Sure, they'll still lose players especially if their coaches actively try to do what's best for the future of their players (like Speedy and his staff did for Estrada), but there ARE ways to keep players even if you're not a power conference school - kind of what I was saying earlier when I was told I was "dreaming" when I suggested that you can slowly build a more successful program, one that starts making NCAATs and even winning NCAAT games at times, through a hybrid of keeping some players while also being known as a good feeder school.

If you have enough NIL money, even if it's not as much NIL money as many other schools, you can still find ways to keep players at home if you have enough NIL money to keep players happy and they like where they are (even though they could make more money elsewhere). I'll bet that even though Timberlake made more money at Kansas than he could have at Towson, the fact that it hasn't otherwise really worked out for Timberlake at Kansas helped Towson to keep their players now.

It's still an enormous challenge but it can be done with the right approach (like this hybrid one perhaps) and with being as serious about NIL as Towson is.

If everybody pays their players, nothing will change. The "best" players will continue to go to the "best" schools (where they can earn the most money). And Hofstra will continue to lose its top players to schools that can pay more. Hell, we might even lose players to Towson.

Moreover, paying players will not guarantee success. Just ask UNC. (I saw their well-paid big man hawking tax software in an NCAAT commercial yesterday.) Where were the Tar Heels last night? Oh, I forgot. They lost to Alabama and were watching the Final Four at home.

Finally, this whole scheme is rife for abuse. No oversight, no controls. It's just a bigger version of the payola scandals we have seen before.

Nothing guarantees success. But try winning without having some sort of NIL collective going forward and see how difficult that would be.

Well, not exactly the help Calipari will get at Arkansas from Tyson Foods' John H. Tyson, but it's something! :D

This looks like a fan-established thing, which is fine. But I'm guessing Towson started and pushed its collective? That's what Hofstra needs to do. Maybe David S. Mack can work with HU to help start that.

Personally, I think you're an idiot if you give to this. Let's start with this...who is auditing their books?

The Hofstra administration is behind this. They are pushing this.

Turnpikeunited.com says, "Turnpike United is not affiliated with the Hofstra University in any way."

And I have never seen anything in writing from the University where Hofstra endorses this organization.

But other than that, seems as legit as Bernie Madoff. Where do I sign?

So if we donate to the Pride club why should we donate here too
We have a limited fan base
Families on Long Island are already stretched to limit with their budgets
I can see donations for the $10 or $25 per month
after that unless you have thousands to give away I dont see many people donating

Pride Club donations are tax deductible and go to the support of a specific sport if designated or general support of the program. NIL donations are NOT tax deductible and go directly to an athlete as compensation as determined by the coach.

Thought this tweet from Jeff Goodman was worth flagging for this overall topic... there's a player asking for $1.5 million in NIL!

No surprise at all with representatives (agents) involved, seeking the maximum they can get for their clients. It's the same as the pros now, so likely, perhaps in the not-too-distant future, this $1.5 million won't seem like so much compared to what others will seek.

This could be why the # of players in the portal is growing significantly faster after the season than they did before.
