MBB Game 27 Northeastern, Feb. 17 (Sat), 2 PM

Post by Jojogunne »

We get a chance on Saturday to redeem ourselves against Northeastern (10-15, 5-7), who beat us 71-68 at their place back on Jan. 5.

In that game, the Huskies led by 19 at the half. Tyler Thomas scored 26 second-half points to help us tie the score, but we lost in the end. Luke Sakota paced Northeastern with 19 points.

More recently, the Huskies dropped five of six CAA games before defeating Campbell and Monmouth, two teams we could not beat.

As of tonight (Wednesday), the Huskies rank 10th in the CAA. They host Charleston tomorrow.

Both MSG and FloHoops will carry our game.

6.5 point favorites with a 85% chance of winning this game per ESPN. Fingers crossed NE always a thorn in our side!

Need to start winning close games lost quite a few games by close scores that we really could of/should of won. Don't like the trend of going back to the TT taking center stage show. Need a balanced attack and Dubar has to start showing out. Hopefully he gets the touches to do just that.

Even if Dubar doesn't get the touches, need him to not sulk and let it affect his effort in other areas of his game. I'm more concerned about Dubar's number of rebounds than shots, if he gets that back to the 7-10 range it'll show he's fully engaged in the game, and then the points will come naturally

https://gohofstra.com/news/2024/2/16/me ... urday.aspx is our preview titled "Pride And Huskies To Face Each Other On Saturday."

https://s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/side ... game27.pdf is our Game Notes.

https://defiantlydutch.blogspot.com/202 ... fstra.html is Jerry Beach's "I'll Be Quirky: Northeastern at Hofstra." Dubar's double-digit streak ended at 27 games, so we do not have anybody who scored double-digits in every game. I wonder how many teams have somebody who scored double-digits in every game. It is the first season since 2015-2016 that we lost two games with double-digit leads at halftime. Jerry cites Jonathan Wagner from here who wrote that we led with under seven minutes left in all five of our CAA losses. Dubar moved up to 27th with 1,193 points, which is 26 fewer than 26th place Aaron Estrada. Thomas moved up to 32nd with 1,157 points. He has 2 fewer than Ted Jackson, 27 fewer than Rokas Gustys, and 29 fewer than Brian Bernardi and Juan'ya Green. Thomas is shooting threes 23-51 (.451) in his last six games. Thomas is our first player to score at least 30 in two losses in one season since Justin Wright-Foreman in 2018-2019. Thomas was the first player to have sole possession of our most points, rebounds, and assists in a game since Estrada on February 19, 2022. Thomas had his second game with at least 30 points, at least 5 rebounds, and at least 5 assists. The Sports-Reference College Basketball Play Index goes back to 2010-2011, which was Charles Jenkins's senior season. Thomas is tied with Jenkins and Estrada for the second most 30-5-5 games in that time. Writght-Foreman did it five times. Green and Desure Buie did it once.

On Thursday, Carlos had 3 assists. Today he got 4 assists in 4:06. We lead 18-14. Chris Doherty has 9 points and is going to the free throw line. Dubar made two threes, and will rest while Washington plays. Washington got in before Farmer or Robinson.

27-18, Hofstra at the U8 (7:53).

Towson, one of the two teams Hofstra trails by only a game for a top-four CAA tourney seed, trails at Hampton, 26-16, in the first half (Hofstra has a H2H tiebreaker over Towson).

Really nice sideline report from the broadcast... talking about Tyler saying the game sped up on him with all the defensive attention he was getting earlier in the season, and now it's slowed down and he's more confident in reading the defense

Better mix of Thomas (3/6 fg) and Dubar (4/7 fg) than last game leading the way today.

Carlos deserved that prayer 3 falling to end the half... chefs kiss for his best all around half of the season. Dubar looks more engaged as well

Still a long way to go as we've all learned the hard way. Will they keep up the intensity on the defensive end for a full 40 min for once? First 2-3 min of 2nd half are critical, they let Monmouth and Drexel go on quick mini runs right out the gate of 2nd half in both those collapses

The assists are back for Carlos. After 11 total (and no more than four in any game) over the last four games, he has nine - matching Northeastern's nine - in the first half. Pride with the game's biggest lead, 41-30, at the break, closing the half on a 9-2 run. They also led by the same margin at 32-21.

Sakota did virtually nothing in that half. If they continue to keep him in check (he hurt them in the first half in Boston) and Doherty continues to be the only one really doing damage, they'll win.

Carlos need one more assist in the second half to match his career-best against a D-I team and four more to equal his overall career-high (13 against Old Westbury last year).

We led by 11 at 32-21. Then we went 2:14 without scoring, and Northeastern went down 32-28. Dubar made a dunk, Plotnikov made 2 free throws from a one-and-one when we often do not reach the bonus in the first half, Carlos stole the ball and passed to Washington for a layup, Collin Metcalf made a dunk, Metcalf blocked Sunday's shot, we recovered the ball at midcourt without the shot clock resetting, and Carlos made a three an extra step behind the three-point line to beat the shot clock and give us a 41-30 lead at halftime. He scored with 7 seconds left, and Northeastern missed a three after that. Northeastern's only lead was 2-0 for 57 seconds. Thomas had 10 points from average shooting, but had 0 rebounds, 0 assists, and 2 turnovers. Dubar and Chris Doherty tied for the most points with 12, but Dubar had only 2 rebounds. Carlos shot 2-3 and had 2 points until his late three gave him 5. He led us with 4 rebounds, and led all players with 9 assists. He had 7 assists before his only turnover with 2:01 left. There were not many rebounds, with 15 for us, and 12 for Northeastern. We had 6 team rebounds, and of our 9 rebounds by players, Carlos was the only player to get more than 2. Fritz committed his second foul 4:02 in and did not re-enter. He had 2 points, 0 rebounds, and 1 block. Sunday scored 2 in 9 minutes, and we played a significant amount of time without a forward. Doherty scored 10 in the first 8:06, but only 2 after that. Masai Troutman made both of his threes and scored 9. Rashad King had no points and 2 fouls in 14 minutes, but led all players with 5 rebounds. We have 3 offensive rebounds that led to 8 second chance points, and Northeastern did not have any. We had more bench points, points in the paint, and fast break points, while Northeastern did not have any fast break points. I am surprised that Farmer did not play, but we did well without him.

In the other CAA games at halftime, Hampton leads 41-33 hosting Towson, North Carolina A&T leads 28-23 hosting Delaware, and Drexel leads 38-26 hosting Campbell.

Carlos gets his career-high-tying 13th assist with 12:40 left on a short baseline jumper from Plotnikov, who has scored the Pride's last eight points.

What is the hofstra record for assists in a game, Carlos is at 17. Thought they robbed him of one on a plotnikov basket a little while ago too.

Carlos records his 17th assist for a new CAA record, a record that went back to 1986.
