MBB Game 25 @ NC A&T, Feb. 10 (Sat), 2 PM

Post by Jojogunne »

Our road trip continues to East Greensboro, NC, where we will face the Aggies of North Carolina A&T (7-16, 5-5) on Saturday at 2 pm.

Sophomore Landon Glasper leads NC A&T in scoring with 21.3 ppg. He is right behind Xander Rice of Monmouth and Tyler Thomas, who are tied for the CAA lead with 21.7 ppg. Nationally, Rice ranks seventh, Thomas eighth and Glasper 12th. (Tyler still leads DI in 3FG, with 85.)

NC A&T will be on the CBS Sports Network Thursday vs. Charleston at 8 pm

Our game will stream on FloHoops.

Looks like Landon Glasper did not play for NC A&T tonight as they got blown out at Charleston. We didn't exactly take advantage of Mullen being out for Hampton, but still something to keep an eye on for Saturday.

Glasper hasn't played since the game against Delaware which was on 1/25. Clearly a loss for them at 21.3 a game.

https://gohofstra.com/news/2024/2/9/men ... a-a-t.aspx is titled "Hofstra Looks To Continue Winning Ways At North Carolina A&T." North Carolina A&T scored only 58 at a Charleston team that allows 74.8.

https://s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/side ... game25.pdf is our Game Notes.

North Carolina A&T does not write previews, but their recap of yesterday says that not only were they without Landon Glasper's 21.3, it was also the second consecutive game missed by Jeremy Robinson, who is third on the team with 7.5. If neither of them play, point guard Camian Shell will be their only player averaging over 6.7 points, and KiJan Robinson can play without their being two Robinsons on the court. They are not a deep team. Like us, they used 11 players. One played 22 minutes, and one played 19 minutes, so only nine players average over one minute per team game. Taking away two leaves seven players. They used eight players yesterday, including Ahmad Hamilton who had 7 minutes before yesterday and played 12 minutes yesterday. If Glasper and Robinson do not play, their available players will average only 43.5 points per game. Nikolaos Chitikoudis had 17 points, 12 rebounds, and 4 blocks last night. Nobody other than Glasper makes many threes, and they shot threes 2-16 (.125) last night. Chitikoudis, Jason Murphy, Hamilton, and Uchenna Kellman-Nicholes combined to shoot free throws 1-11 (.091) last night. They shoot free throws .704, and are lucky that their opponents shoot free throws .684, which is the 37th lowest opponents' free throw percentage of 362 teams.

For what its worth ESPN has us as 11.5 favs and gives us an 86.9% chance of winning.

Don't think wever covered on a CAA spread this season.

https://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadca ... ?id=489258 will have statistics. We are starting our usual starters. North Carolina A&T is starting Kyle Duke (guard, 6.6 points), Camian Shell (guard, 12.2 points, 4.5 assists that is second to Carlos in the CAA), Jalal McKie (guard, 6.7 points), Jason Murphy (forward, 6.5 points, 6.2 rebounds), and Nikolaos Chitikoudis (forward, 6.3 points). Landon Glasper is still out. If he stays up, he will stop qualifying for statistics leaders after next Saturday. The announcer called him day-to-day. North Carolina A&T averages only 9.3 turnovers. They shoot poorly, and have a horrible -10.04 rebounding margin per game. The next worst in the CAA is our -3.33. North Carolina A&T is last in the CAA in rebounds per game and opponents' rebounds per game. They are last in the CAA in opponents' field goal percentage. Their statistics are worse than Hampton's.

We scored 2, allowed 2, and we are on an 11-0 run to lead 13-2. Sunday is the only sub we used, and I wonder if Farmer or Robinson will come in after the media timeout. Thomas missed 2 shots. Nobody on either team has attempted a free throw. North Carolina A&T has 5 offensive rebounds, we have 2, and nobody has any second chance points. North Carolina A&T is shooting 1-11. The teams have 3 fouls each. We have 3 turnovers, and North Carolina A&T has 6.

Northeastern leads 56-49 hosting Monmouth.

Edit: We led 16-2, and it is now 22-10 with 6:05 left in the half. Thomas scored his first 2 points with 7:12 left in the half. North Carolina A&T had a funny play when they saved the ball from going out of bounds by sending it over the backboard. They ended their drought and got to 4 points with a bank shot. They had two shot clock violations in the first 4:18.

Northeastern leads 66-56 hosting Monmouth. Monmouth Xander Rice will probably score more than Thomas today, as Rice leads all scorers with 21.

Edit: We lead 24-10. We have not made a three in the last 7:14, and North Carolina A&T is shooting threes 0-8. North Carolina A&T has more rebounds 19 to 15. That means a team with a rebounding margin of about -10 per game is on pace to have 10 more rebounds and lose by about 35 points.

Speedy should honestly consider benching Dubar the rest of this game after what he just did. That kind of lackadaisical nonsense is exactly why Hofstra is where it is this season, and not 10-1 in conference and up 30 already today

Uncw up 46-25 at the half at Hampton today with Mullen back in the lineup. That should tell you more about where Hofstra is than anything they do on the court today

The announcer said the ball slipped out of Dubar's hand, not that he was trying to show off. Plotnikov (17) played more minutes than Carlos and Dubar (16 each). Plotnikov shot 4-5 including threes 3-4 and was the only double-digit scorer on either team with 11. Thomas, Dubar, and Camian Shell scored 8. Carlos and Shell, who are the point guards, had 1 assist each. Thomas led all players with 3 assists and led all players with 3 turnovers. North Carolina A&T did not make a three, and did not have a possession with an odd amount of points until they made 1 of 2 free throws with 2:56 left. For a continous 15:46, we had at least twice as many points as North Carolina A&T, until the Aggies made 2 free throws with 1:30 left to go down 29-15. We responded with a two by Thomas (who missed his only attempt three), and a three by Farmer to lead 34-15 at halftime. After being outrebounded earlier, each team has 20 rebounds. We shot threes 8-11 (.545), twos 8-20 (.400), and did not attempt a free throw. Carlos and 0 points, 1 rebound, and 1 assist. Shell was North Carolina A&T's only player with more than 2 points. He scored 8 by shooting 1-6 and free throws 6-6.

Northeastern defeated Monmouth 77-65. Xander Rice led all players with 25 points, and Chris Doherty led Northeastern with 19. Monmouth used 15 players, and Northeastern used 11. Monmouth made 2 threes and had 12 fewer rebounds.

Edit: We allowed consecutive threes early in the half. The video did not know to take a timeout away from us at halftime because teams cannot call four timeouts in the second half. We led by as much as 26, and lead 62-37. Thomas made his third three to get up to 19. He leads all players in points, rebounds (10), and assists 4. Something bad is that we committed our seventh foul with 7:38 left, so after the timeout North Carolina A&T will shoot a one-and-one.

To Hofstra's credit they caught uncw... both teams wound up with identical 64-39 leads during the 2nd half of their games today

The good- Efficient game for Tyler "Taylor" Thomas ("Dunbar" a little more understandable slip up from the broadcast crew than that one). Nice to see him get back to the mid range and not settle for 3s. Nice efforts from German and Fritz too.

The bad - Dubar went back into his hole. Looked completely disinterested in taking the opponent seriously. Look no further than just 10 reb COMBINED last 3 games and his two lazy blown fast break chances today.

The ugly - Poor A&T. Without glasper that team is ROUGH.

Somehow though Hofstra has put itself squarely back in position to control its own destiny and grab a top 4 seed. Still FAR from convinced they'll pull it off... but it's all in front of them now. Sink or swim on the court now down the home stretch

We won 81-49, and UNCW won 95-65 at halftime, so we had the larger marin of victory. Today's four CAA games that are over had an average margin of 23.

Plotnikov led all scorers with 20. He shot 8-9 including threes 4-5. Thomas scored 19, led all player with 10 rebounds, and led all players with 4 assists. Fritz shot 5-6 and free throws 3-3 to have 13 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists. 4 rebounds is okay because he only played 19 minutes. Sunday had 6 rebounds in 21 minutes, but shot 0-2 and did not score. Each forward committed 4 fouls. Dubar scored 13 and shot 4-13 by shooting threes 2-5 and twos 2-8. Carlos scored 6, and Robinson and Farmer scored 5. Plotnikov had 7 rebounds. Carlos had 7 assists.

Camian Shell led North Carolina A&T with 14 points and 3 assists. He shot field goals 3-10 and free throws 8-8. Their other double-digit scorer was Ahmad Hamilton with 11. Jason Murphy and Nikolaos Chitikoudis tied for their lead with 8 rebounds.

We shot 30-59 (.508) by shooting twos 19-37 (.514) and threes 11-22 (.500). We shot free throws 10-12 (.833), with all of them in the last 18:04. We had more rebounds 37 to 34, and more assists 14 to 6. North Carolina A&T blocked 1 shot, and we did not block any. North Carolina A&T shot 14-52 (.269) by shooting twos 11-35 (.314) and threes 3-17 (.176). It was our lowest opponents' field goal percentage in an away game from 2010-2011 to now, which includes 196 away games, so our defense traveled. They shot free throws 18-24 (.750).

Jayden Henriquez made his NCAA debut by playing the last 2:46, and his only nonzero statistic was missing a three 9 seconds after he entered. The bench played 55 minutes, which is a lot by our standards.

Jerry Beach wrote that on Thursday, Plotnikov became the first Hofstra starter to finish with no points, rebounds or assists since Stafford Trueheart did so over 10 minutes in a 90-84 win over William & Mary on Feb. 15, 2018. I wonder if we ever had a player have zeroes for all three of those and have at least 20 points and at least 7 rebounds in the next game.

Here are Analytics leaders:

Efficiency: Plotnikov 27, Thomas 22, and Fritz 17
Game score: Plotnikov 20.0, Thomas 14.0, and Camian Shell 11.6
Net points: Fritz 5.2, Thomas 4.2, and Plotnikov 3.3 (Ahmad Hamilton's +0.7 was the only positive on North Carolina A&T, and it adds up to a negative number for all players combined)

Edit: https://gohofstra.com/news/2024/2/10/me ... ctory.aspx is titled "Hofstra Cruises To Fourth Consecutive Victory." We ended our team record streak of ten games decided by single-digits. Stony Brook had an 11 game streak of that end Thursday, meaning we entered today with the longeste active streak of that. Baylor trails 23-11 at Kansas, and if that game is decided by double-digits, the longest active streak of that will be 9 games by North Alabama, who extended their streak today, and East Tennessee State if their in progress game is decided by single-digits. Monmouth had a seven game streak end by losing by 12 at Northeastern. Dubar tied Rokas Gustys for 29th on our career points list, and Thomas moved up to 35th with 5 fewer points than Mike Moore, who led the CAA in points per game in 2011-2012, which was the first season after Charles Jenkins.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9uzKQeQ95FI is highlights. They are 1:37, which is shorter than usual, and that is with us making 30 field goals.

https://gohofstra.com/sports/mens-baske ... core/12804 is the box score. The attendance was 1,054, which was higher than the 1,004 at Hampton. Drexel gets low attendance, so we could play three consecutive away games that all get under 2,000. North Carolina A&T entered with an average attendance of 2,488, which is good by CAA standards.

Charleston won 80-70 hosting Drexel. Campbell won 95-77 as an underdog hosting Stony Brook. Delaware won 69-58 hosting William & Mary, and the margin of 11 was the smallest of today's six CAA games, which had an average margin of 18.8. Towson hosts Elon on Monday. The standings are:

1. UNCW 9-3 (2-0 vs. Charleston)
2. Charleston 9-3
3. Drexel 8-4 (1-0 against Us and Delaware combined, 1-2 against UNCW and Charleston combined)
4. Us 8-4 (1-0 against Drexel and Delaware combined, 0-1 against UNCW and Charleston combined)
5. Delaware 8-4 (0-2 against Drexel and Delaware combined)
6. Towson 7-4*
7. Campbell 6-6 (1-0 against Stony Brook and Monmouth combined)
8. Stony Brook 6-6 (1-1 against Monmouth and Campbell combined)
9. Monmouth 6-6 (0-1 against Campbell and Stony Brook combined)
10. North Carolina A&T 5-7 (1-0 against Northeastern and they do not play again)
11. Northeastern 5-7 (0-1 against North Carolina A&T)
12. Elon 3-8 (0-1 against William & Mary and they play again, Elon will fall behind William & Mary if Elon loses to Towson on Monday)
13. William & Mary 3-9
14. Hampton 0-12

* In the likely event that Towson beats Elon, the tiebreakers will make us third, Towson fourth, Drexel fifth, and Delaware sixth. In that case, one game will change the seeds of six teams.

Just embarrassing. It takes almost no effort and preparation at all to simply get the names right. And this is not like some of the foreign tennis names we see. It's not understandable at all to get it wrong. This is their job. It's ridiculous to not get ALL of the names right, but especially a couple of very simple two-syllable names. They need to do way better or hire competent people.

dutchPride86 wrote: Sat Feb 10, 2024 5:09 pm Nice to see him get back to the mid range and not settle for 3s.
Probably the smartest game Thomas has played all season. Love to see this. Shot great from 3 (3/5) and yet still only took 5 3s out of his 16 total shots, along with game-highs of 10 rebounds and four assists. He is really playing differently over the last three games, like he wants to lead this team to wins the right way rather than just recklessly jacking up 3s. The 3s are now a good PART of his overall game rather than the focus of his game.

dutchPride86 wrote: Sat Feb 10, 2024 5:09 pm Nice efforts from German and Fritz too.
A combined 33 pts on 13/15. If they're doing that, and Thomas, Dubar, and Carlos are doing their thing, they can beat anyone in the league.

Finally, a laugher. Hofstra's first seven CAA wins this year were by a total of 37 points. Today, they win by almost the same (32).

Hofstra 7-1 in the CAA after a 1-3 start. Drexel 1-4 after a 7-0 start. And now they are both 8-4 and suddenly heading in opposite directions before meeting on Thursday. That's why we have to let the season play out.

Had to be the first game in Hofstra history in which their team name in team colors were painted on an opposing team's floor (AGGIE PRIDE in yellow letters against the blue backdrop on the baselines).
