MBB Game 23 Towson, Feb. 3 (Sat), 6 PM

Post by Jojogunne »

Our schedule gets a little tougher on Saturday when we welcome Towson to the Mack Arena.

The Tigers (13-8, 6-2 after last weekend) are a top four team, tied with Charleston behind first-place Drexel. We are 11-10, 4-4.

This game will feature all three of the CAA's players of the week. Darlinstone Dubar and Towson's Christian May shared Player of the Week honors today (Monday), and Towson's Dylan Williamson was named Rookie of the Week.

The game was moved to 6 pm because it's on the CBS Sports Network. For what it's worth, this game is "winter homecoming" with Speedy Claxton jerseys for the first 500 fans and a car giveaway.

May, Tarke, and Williamson will be tough but if Dubar, Thomas, and Carlos play well offensively, they can neutralize or even outdo whatever damage those three might do for the Tigers.

I think the real challenge will be in dealing with Charles Thompson. Another guy (like Northeastern's Doherty) who feels like he's been in the CAA forever, now in his fifth-year. He's the type of typical strong, physical presence we normally see every year from Towson up front, and Thompson, at 6-7, 250 could pose a problem for this HU roster to deal with on the glass and in the paint.

We're around a 2.5 point favorite. Clearly an important game need to win at home.

ESPN has us as 3.5 pt favs and gives us a 66.9 % chance of winning. Our record against the spread has been really poor, don't expect it to be any different this time around...another one point win at the buzzer will be just fine!

It mistakenly says "Stony Brook had a chance late to win but Hofstra held on for the one-point victory. "

Khalil Farmer getting major minutes out of the blue.... maybe he's been hurt for a while and we never knew?

Hofstra has to rotate better on D and stop giving up wide open corner 3s. And if this team could ever clean up the turnovers against teams that actually play defense...

Should not be tied, Hofstra had an opportunity to build a nice cushion and blew it

Why was Dubar on the bench so long?

He picked up a very early foul. But I agree Speedy fell a little too in love with Farmer there at Dubar's expense

We led by 9 in the first half, but it was 28-28 at halftime. Towson went up 38-31 with 15:05 left. Now we are on a 17-4 run to lead 48-46 with 7:36. Towson had the first 13 second chance points before Thomas got an offensive rebound and made a three. Christian May, Dylan Williamson, and Charles Thompson combine to average 32 points, and they have 2 each. Towson is dominating points in the paint 20 to 4 and fast break points 7 to 0.

Fun while it lasted, but might be time to get Fritz and German back in there to close it out? Tough decisions way that group was playing there for a bit

EDIT - Speedy did just that

Heart attack city. For a team that's so good on half court inbound plays, it blows my mind how incompetent they are at breaking a press. And at this point have to expect them to miss any critical 1-and-1 front end in a big spot. But yet they won...again! In some ways feel like these last 2 games almost even out the Northeastern and Campbell losses - 6-4 is about right for this team's talent vs their flaws/mistakes.

Big picture, Hofstra keeps their faint hopes at a top 4 seed alive, not having to play Towson again could prove huge with tiebreakers down the road. Still feel this team is too flawed and makes too many mistakes to win 3 games in 3 days in DC, let alone 4, but can't knock the effort level lately. And kudos to Tyler for making his hero shots today, and the 9 assists.

Seemed like a good atmosphere on TV, hope the students actually come back!

We went up 9, blew it, went up 59-54 with 42 seconds left, and held on to win 59-56. While down 59-54, Towson's pressure made us call our last two timeouts, and they eventually stole the ball from Thomas scored to go down 59-56 with 8.8 seconds left. With 8.0 seconds left, Carlos missed the first of a one-and-one. Towson did not have a timeout. Dylan Williamson got in okay position for a game-tying three, but shot it too far. Dubar got the rebound, and Towson tried to foul him, but time ran out without a foul being called. Even if they had called a foul and Dubar missed the first of a one-and-one, the clock would have started, and Towson would have needed to make a three from by their basket like Eli Pemberton did.

Thomas was easily the player of the game with 23 points by shooting 9-17 including threes 4-8 and free throws 1-1 which was a four-point play, tied Carlos for our lead with 7 rebounds, and had a career-high 9 assists, which was more than Towson had. In the second half, Thomas had 14 points and all 6 of our assists. Dubar scored 14, which was more than anybody on Towson, but had only 4 rebounds. Carlos had 8 points, 7 rebounds, and 1 assist, which was with 13:10 left in the first half. Washington (4), Farmer (4), and Sunday (2) gave us 10 bench points. Fritz shot 1-5 including missing three layups and both free throws. He was scoreless until his layup with 2:16 left. Robinson did not shoot.

Towson's double-digit scorers were Nendah Tarke with 12, and Tomiwa Sulaiman with 10. Christian May, who leads them in points per game, scored 5. Sulaiman, Charles Thompson, and Messiah Jones tied for the most rebounds on either team with 8. Dylan Williamson shot 2-7 to score 5, and led Towson with 4 assists.

Towson had more rebounds 42-32, but that is not bad by our standard. Towson had more offensive rebounds 17 to 6, and more second chance points 17 to 3. Towson had more bench points 21 to 10, more points in the paint 24 to 8, and more fast break points 9 to 0. We won consecutive games with no bench points in one game, and no fast break points in the next game. Towson's field goal percentages were easy fractions with field goals 18-60 (.300), twos 12-36 (.333), and threes 6-24 (.250). We shot field goals 23-51 (.451) including twos 12-28 (.429) and threes 11-23 (.478), which was better than we shot twos. Thomas and Dubar made 4 threes, Carlos made 2, and Washington made 1. Towson normally shoots free throws poorly, but they shot 14-15, and we shot 2-6. We had more assists 12 to 8, and both teams had 10 turnovers. We committed only 3 turnovers in the second half. The teams combined to commit 22 fouls, with 10 by us, including a technical on Claxton, and nobody committed more than 2 fouls.

Most attended game this season.... by far. Lower student section full and upper student section 75% full.

Rest of arena was pretty full as well. Finally!! Good to see!

The attendance was 3,743. In 2006-2007 we averaged 3,623.

An announcer said we have a 50 game winning streak when allowing under 60 points. We have a 9 game streak of games decided by single-digits.

Thomas played the whole game, and the bench played 43 minutes. I wonder if Thomas leads Division I in the amount of games he played more than his team's bench.

Delaware won 84-80 hosting Monmouth. Delaware's Jyare Davis had 19 points and 12 rebounds.

William & Mary led Charleston early, blew it, and made a halfcourt three at the first half buzzer to take a 44-41 halftime lead. Charleston went up 9, but W&M would not go away. Charleston made 2 free throws to go up 79-71 with 32 seconds left. W&M made a three, stole the ball, made a three 8 seconds after the previous three, and fouled while down 2 with 15 seconds left. Charleston made 2 free throws, W&M made a layup, Charleston made a free thrown to go up 82-79, and missed the second. Charleston fouled to stop W&M from attempting a three. W&M made the first, and missed the second, which I am assuming was intentional. Charleston got the rebound, W&M fouled, and Ante Brzovic made 2 free throws to make it a two possession game. W&M made a three at the buzzer of each half, but their last three let them lose 84-83. The teams combined for 12 scoring plays in the last 1:03. Chase Lowe led W&M with 21 points and 11 rebounds.

In the CAA's last nonconference game before the postseason, Hampton came back from down 12 to defeat Howard 63-61 at a neutral site in New Jersey. Hampton made the winning three with 24 seconds left.

Elon won 69-65 at North Carolina A&T.

Stony Brook played a similar score to us, as they won 59-55 hosting Northeastern. Northeastern had Joe Pridgen leave the team, and Chris Doherty did not play, so they did not have anybody averaging at least 4 rebounds. They still used ten players, and Harold Woods had 8 rebounds. Jared Turner led all players with 15 points, and he did not start.

UNCW was favored by 14.5 hosting Campbell, but it was much closer. UNCW made the winning shot with 3:44 left and won 77-74.

The standings are:

Drexel 8-2
Towson, UNCW, and Charleston 7-3
Us and Delaware 6-4
Stony Brook, North Carolina A&T, Monmouth, and Campbell 5-5
William & Mary, Northeastern, and Elon 3-7
Hampton 0-10

After the 1-3 start, this is not bad at all with eight games left. Take nothing for granted, but with a trip that starts at Hampton and NC A&T, there's a great opportunity to make it 7-1 since the 1-3 start and to be 8-4 at the two-thirds mark of CAA play before starting the brutal find third at Drexel.

Nice to start winning the close ones. Wins by 1 and 3 after losing three CAA games by a total of 7.

Also, it's extremely difficult to go 2-0 when being outscored off the bench 20-0 in one game and outscored 17-3 in second-chance points the next, but they did find a way to win both.
