I wonder how the writer found out about this incident and why Speedy would talk about it publicly?

Brian Mull is good at what he does. It's possible he was just interviewing Speedy in general, maybe that came up, and he explored it further. Speedy wouldn't have detailed the story if he thought it was damaging in any way, and I don't think it was.
