MBB Game 04 Buffalo, Nov 20 (Mon), 7:30 PM

Post by Jojogunne »

So after lackluster showings against Princeton and GWU, Hofstra heads down to Fort Myers, Florida, to play three games in three days in the 2023 Gulf Coast Showcase.

Our first opponent will be the University at Buffalo Bulls, who lost their first two games, against FDU and South Alabama.

FloHoops will carry all games.

Maybe they'll have 12 men on the field, giving a second chance at a game-winning field goal like against Denver on Monday night. Oops, sorry. Wrong Buffalo!

Fun fact about that game though, which Evan will probably like (or knowing Evan, he probably already knew it)...
Only two games in NFL history have ever been 15-8 at halftime and they were BOTH Denver leading Buffalo at halftime, 62 years apart (in 1961 and again on Monday night). What were the odds of that?!

I don't have a way of finding scores at halftime. It is possible to get a list of games for each final score.

You'd know better than me, but that one on the two 15-8 halftime scores is a confirmed fact. I just wonder if someone could have bet on that, what the odds might've been.

Aaaaanyway, back to THIS Buffalo, and the next home game (vs. South Florida), Hofstra will be playing the Bulls twice over the next four games.

ESPN gives the Pride an 81.2% chance of winning, but the last two matchup predictors didn't go so well for them, so take nothing for granted!

I've found rare events where if odds for that were made before the game, I think they would be a five-digit number to 1.

I thought about other times we played two teams with the same name in the same season. We've repeatedly done it with the Towson and Princeton Tigers. In 2017-2018, we played the Clemson and Auburn Tigers in consecutive games, and Towson later. In 2011-2012, we played the Towson and Princeton Tigers, the St. Francis Brooklyn and Boston University Terriers, and the Rhode Island and VCU Rams. In 2014-2015, we played the Wagner and UNCW Seahawks. In 2009-2010, we played the Connecticut and Northeastern Huskies. Bulls, Tigers, Terriers, Rams, Seahawks, and Huskies are six names.

Welp, two things for sure:

1) HU isn't beating anyone playing the way they have thus far
2) ESPN's % calls stink lol

I'm going to be fair and give this a couple more games with this tournament to see if they start to show signs of intelligent life. They look like garbage right now, but rocking my blue and gold goggles, I still think this team CAN be something in time.

Not going down the list, but will say KJ is going to be a good one. One of the very few bright spots so far.

Speedy keeps claiming everything's going to be fine - I'm not onboard with the meaningless coach speak just yet, but hey it's his reputation on the line, so the results are his to own. The entire point of this tourney is for this team to get early experience playing 3 in 3 to understand and SHOW it has what it takes to dance. They've failed to win any of these so far, failed to dance, and they certainly aren't winning with a lazy ass game plan of chucking 3's all game. Let's see a real strategy and some D1 level execution.

There is no reason whatsoever we should see the same crap again next week unless this is just going to be a complete waste. With 3 games on tap, you HAVE to show some improvement - it doesn't take half a season to get experienced D1 guys to drive, rebound, and move the ball.

BASICS. Enough with the hero ball nonsense, that's for losers - play the game right. ROLL PRIDE

The Bulls won their first game of the season last night, defeating DII Roberts Wesleyan 89-83. They are now 1-2. Looks like they can score, but not defend.

The Bulls' last three games are all on ESPN+.

A six-point win over a D-II team after starting 0-2. This is a must-win for Hofstra. Buffalo has been a very good program in recent years but it looks like they're way down this season. After the losses to Princeton and GW, HU has to get this one to start righting the ship here in the early going. This is a TCB game against a team they should beat.

We're 9.5 point favorites over Buffalo according to Yahoo sports. Is Buffalo that BAD??

Yeah - that spread seems about right - thought itd be 7-8 points - but certainly should be one of our easier games this season.

They are. And if HU can't find ways to get wins on this trip then they'll deserve some harsh criticism. I'm holding out hope, but this team needs to show us something in FL.

The Gulf Coast Showcase starts today with four games:

Iona (156) vs. High Point (272) – 11 a.m. ET
Long Beach State (93) vs. Illinois State (194) – 1:30 p.m.
Louisiana (171) vs. Wright State (157) – 5 p.m.
Hofstra (146) vs. Buffalo (305) – 7:30 p.m.

The numbers in parentheses are today's KenPom ratings. We are #2 and Buffalo is #8.

FloHoops will stream all games.

Good to see that a local children's hospital will benefit from this tournament.

Oh by the way, we were 6-6 after last season's OOC play...the OOC is to get ready for the CAA....try different combinations, etc...of course we all want to see effort and some wins but in the end only the CAA games matter...

Yes experimenting with the lineup is what it's all about but I know Speedy will not be happy with sloppy play and losses. Maybe we found a player in Robinson who can shine here in his freshman year and if and when we see Wilmoth maybe he will be a pleasant surprise but he will have to work his way back into playing condition. A lot of ifs and buts??

Dubar has to step up his game, or else give Plotnikov a shot at starting in place of him or Washington.

Also, what's up with Parnell? He's supposed to be a legit scorer.

Buffalo had been a good program in recent years (under Bobby Hurley and Nate Oats). They had three NCAA tournament wins and a 27-win season and 32-win season back-to-back but they're on to a couple of coaches since then and they're down now. They allowed 83 points to D-II Roberts Wesleyan in their last game (their only win so far this year), and that was a game into the final minute. After being held to 67 and 60 in its last two games, this should be - HAS to be - the game HU's offense gets on track and gets over 80 points.

ESPN gives us an 85.2% percent chance of winning and the spread is now -8.5. We NEED to take this one!
