MBB Game 27 @ Monmouth, 2/11/23 (Sat), 2 PM

Post by Jojogunne »

Monmouth is on a roll. The Hawks (5-20, 4-8 CAA) have won four games in a row. Their only other victory came back on Dec. 4 at Manhattan. Monmouth and Elon are the first CAA teams this season to lose 20 games.

From the Monmouth recap, it appears that the Hawks played a furious, trapping defense against Stony Brook tonight. We'll have to prepare for that. On offense, the Hawks went scoreless (0-9) from the arc for the first time in more than 13 years.

The game is on SNY.

Confused about who's coming back or not. Estrada and Thomas both have another year or not? Both Bigs, Williams and Nelson BY do not? Anyone have an answer? Thanks.

Thomas and Estrada both have another year of eligibility; we will have to wait and see if either decide to come back to Hofstra or not.

Williams and NBY are both playing for a 5th year and have no eligibility remaining after this year.

My understanding is that our bigs are one and done.

AE and TT both have another year of eligibility. That being said, as I recall, last year AE filed for the NBA draft (which many high caliber players do to test the waters) to see if there was interest and to get feedback from pro scouts, etc. There is a specific date by which a player who has filed can back out and not lose his amateur status (meaning he can go back to play college). I think there are many college players who are on the NBA draft bubble that take this route. I think JWF did the same after his junior season (he got feedback from the pros, came back to HU for his senior season, worked hard to improve, and then got drafted). In AEs case, not sure what he heard from the pros, and based on what he heard has he improved enough this season to up his stock and better his chances of getting a pro contract. I think he could do the same thing he did last year and leave himself some flexibility.

TT could do the same thing (although I think AE is further along in the process of moving into the pro ranks). If HU loses both, it would be devastating, conversely, if we keep both.. :D :D :D

https://gohofstra.com/news/2023/2/9/men ... urday.aspx is titled "Headed To The Jersey Shore; Hofstra To Face Monmouth On Saturday."

https://s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/side ... game27.pdf is the Game Notes. I was going to type the statistics comparison with us and then Monmouth, but Page 2 of the Game Notes is way off for Monmouth, and I e mailed Stephen Gorchov.

Here is the CAA schedule with CAA records, statistics links, and KenPom expectations:

KenPom expects us to win 76-62 with an 89 percent chance of winning.

Towson (9-3) at Drexel (8-5) at 2:00 P.M.: http://stats.statbroadcast.com/statmonitr/?id=425151
KenPom expects Drexel to win 65-64 with a 51 percent chance of winning.

North Carolina A&T (7-6) at Stony Brook (4-8) at 2:00 P.M.: http://stats.statbroadcast.com/statmonitr/?id=428325
KenPom expects North Carolina A&T to win 70-69 with a 52 percent chance of winning.

William & Mary (4-8) at Elon (3-9) at 2:00 P.M.: http://stats.statbroadcast.com/statmonitr/?id=425241
KenPom expects Elon to win 72-69 with a 61 percent chance of winning.

Charleston (11-2) at Hampton (3-9) at 4:00 P.M. http://stats.statbroadcast.com/statmonitr/?id=425748
KenPom expects Charleston to win 85-68 with a 94 percent chance of winning.

Northeastern (4-8) at UNCW (9-4) at 7:00 P.M.: http://stats.statbroadcast.com/statmonitr/?id=426898

https://monmouthhawks.com/news/2023/2/1 ... fstra.aspx is titled "STREAKING MU RETURNS HOME SATURDAY TO HOST HOFSTRA."

https://s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/side ... ofstra.pdf is Monmouth's Game Notes. It gives the Twitter and Instagram for all of their players. I wonder if the team requires players to use Twitter and Instagram to promote the team, or every player did it voluntarily.

ESPN also gives us a 94.9 percent chance of winning.

Sagarin says we're 12 point favs even on the road, although Monmouth has been playing much better lately.

The Sagarin has a Recent component that is about the same as the other parts. Monmouth is on a four game winning streak, but we are also doing well recently.

http://defiantlydutch.blogspot.com/2023 ... mouth.html is Jerry Beach's "I'll Be Quirky: Hofstra at Monmouth." Carlos had 7 assists in the last 12 minutes, was Jerry's top star. The 72-53 win was our ninth unicorn score of the season, meaning the first time we won by that score. Of 18 wins, we never trailed in 5, and trailed by no more than 2 points in 6. Estrada is 37th in career points, and is 1 behind Darius Burton, 10 behind Derrick Flowers, and 31 behind Ameen Tanksley. Christian Tomasco scored his first points since the season-opener against Princeton. We covered the spread for the sixth consecutive game. We are 27-29 (.482) in our game before each Super Bowl.

We lead 28-6 with only 5 points by Estrada, and 4 by Thomas. Our players other than Estrada scored over double Estrada and Monmouth combined. We have more rebounds 20 to 8.

Edit: We have no field goals and 2 free throws by Williams in the last 4:02, but still lead 30-12. The other CAA games have margins of 0, 0, and 1.

Edit: We took our largest lead at 37-14, and lead 37-16 at halftime. Estrada has as many turnovers as points with 5 of each. Dubar scored 5 early, then committed his second foul with 6:01 played, and sat for the rest of the halftime. Our seven players other than Carlos scored, and Carlos leads all players with 7 rebounds. Williams has 6 rebounds, and Estrada has 5, so we are on pace to have three double-digit rebounders with Monmouth having none. We shot free throws 3-5 including Williams missing the first of a 1-and-1. Monmouth shot 6-35 (.171), and we have a whopping 30 rebounds. One-third of our wins have been with 30 or fewer rebounds, including when we beat Monmouth by 20. I wonder how rare it is for a team to have as many rebounds in the first half of the second game against an opponent as the team had in the first game against that opponent.

Towson led 9-2 early, but host Drexel leads 31-30. Drexel's Yame Butler scored 11, and Towson's Cameron Holden scored 10.

North Carolina A&T blew a 23-20 lead at Stony Brook, who leads 34-31. Elon's Kam Woods and Stony Brook's Tyler Stephenson-Moore scored 10.

Elon leads 32-29 hosting William & Mary. Neither team led by more than 5. Max Mackinnon leads CAA players with 14.

Edit: Estrada has 2 blocks. His only previous career game with 2 blocks was on December 8, 2021 at Stony Brook. He had 1 block this season before today.

Edit: Estrada got his career-high third block. Thomas got his second block to tie his career-high previously done four times before this season. Williams has 2 blocks. We lead 60-37.

Edit: We shot threes 4-16 in the first half and 9-11 so far in the second half. We have our largest lead at 72-42. Thomas has 23 points including shooting threes 4-6 in the second half. Estrada just made two threes to get up to 13 points, and Dubar has 12. Andrew Ball is shooting threes 3-3 and leads Monmouth with 11 points despite playing only 13 of 33 minutes.

This team is really hitting its stride at the right. Took control right from the start and our defense buried them in one of Aaron's porest games.
Every night someone else steps up!
Mark of a great team!

We led by as much as 32 and won 86-57. We had 11 more rebounds in the first half, and 1 fewer rebound in the second half. We used 11 players, and 10 players scored. I'll post more later.

I don't want to read too much into this (and we shouldn't) but may be worth noting that Hofstra was up 10-0 (surprisingly without Thomas scoring as he normally does early), 28-6, 37-16 at halftime and coasted all game at a place where Charleston trailed at the half.

Drexel beat Towson today, leaving UNCW a chance to move into third place with a win tonight). Probably not what we want. I still think Towson is better than UNCW and would rather Charleston & Towson meet in the semis, so one can knock off the other, and UNCW be the 4 seed, but the way Hofstra is locked in, it appears they'll be ready for anyone in DC, however it pans out.

That's now 10 of 12 CAA wins by 13+ points for HU, with half of the 10 by at least 20 points.
