Jaquan Carlos Could Lead the CAA in Assists

Post by EvanJ »

Jaquan Carlos is second in the CAA with 4.45 assists, and William & Mary's Anders Nelson leads with 4.59, which would be the fewest by the CAA leader since 1991-1992. We already had Aaron Estrada, Caleb Burgess, and Desure Buie lead the CAA in assists in the previous three seasons. That is the first time in CAA history that scoring, rebounding, or assists had three consecutive leaders that were different players from the same team. VCU holds the record for consecutive seasons with the leader in one of those. Eric Maynor led in assists in three seasons starting in 2006-2007, and Joey Rodriguez led in the next two seasons ending in 2010-2011. If Estrada leads in scoring and Carlos leads in assists, we will be the first team to have the scoring and assists leader in consecutive seasons regardless of how many players were involved.

Estrada scoring and Carlos feeding him is a big part of the equation here not to mention the scoring of Tyler Thomas. Carlos has two prolific scorers to pass to as they're 2 and 3 in scoring in the conference using CAA stats only. Estrada at 20.6 and Thomas at 18.3. This has behooved Carlos and should continue thru the season.

Well if he played the way he's playing now from the beginning of CAA play who knows he would be one of the leading rebounders, lol!!

I have been in his corner since his early recruiting days in hs. He has in progress star potential.

He has not burst on the scene quickly as I had hoped, his offensive game still requires development, and he is susceptible to ineffective D at his size, but he has countered that with his known true PG ability handling and dishing the rock, and a surprising talent for rebounding the ball. He also works hard on the D end, even though he's not a great matchup in every case. He'll get beat at times, but it's rarely from lack of effort. He is starting to come into his own, and he's really just getting his foundation set - he can be a lot more.

This is why you don't force your stars to play point 'just because' they're great or to try and mask stuff or the overplayed excuse of getting the ball in their hands - that's the literal point of a point guard - guys like AE and JWF and others are superior players, but they are not points. Period. And if you really want to be a balanced team built for championships and to win in the long term, you have to have a real floor general - that's JC.

I'm looking forward to his continued development his Jr and Sr years. He is finally starting to show case the reason for the hype, next two years he has a chance to make his mark and become the next star PG at HU.
