http://defiantlydutch.blogspot.com/2023 ... eston.html is Jerry Beach's "I'll Be Quirky: Charleston." The 82-65 win at Elon was our sixth unicorn score of the season, meaning the first time we won by that score. We are 3-4 when trailing at halftime. We allowed under 70 points for the seventh consecutive game, which is our longest streak since a nine game streak from January 1 to 31, 2013. We went 2-7 during that streak because of horrible offense, including having five consecutive losses allowing 65 or fewer points. That was the season of the four thieves. Winning by 17 ended our four game streak of games decided by at least 20, but extended our streak of games decided by double-digits to seven. We had a seven game streak of that in 2019, and our last streak of at least eight consecutive games decided by double-digits was ten games from January 19 through February 16, 2010. We have a 20 game winning streak in road or neutral Thursday games. Our next road or neutral Thursday game will be in the NCAA Tournament or next season. Our 1 free throw attempt was our fewest since at least 1986-1987.

https://defiantlydutch.blogspot.com/202 ... tball.html is about Charleston Coach Pat Kelsey. All of their players were recruited by him. He said we have the best offense in the CAA.

https://fieldlevelmedia.com/ncaab/hofst ... harleston/ is titled "Hofstra out to derail No. 18 Charleston."

The CAA is down to 24th of 32 in the Conference NET. There is one remaining nonconference game before the postseason, which is Hampton against fellow HBCU Norfolk State next Saturday.

Today's first big news is that Jyare Davis is not playing for Delaware. He is four in scoring, thirteenth in rebounding, and tenth in assists. If he is out a while, it helps Drexel, Charleston, and UNCW, all of whom go to Delaware. Delaware leads 42-36 at halftime hosting Northeastern.

Right - Best and Galgano both played in the UNCW game so I was assuming they weren’t in a boot. Unless they got hurt since then.

As I have posted here before in different threads I believe and I could be wrong but in the UMASS game I saw a different kid on the bench maybe was even warming up that I never saw before. I saw him in pre-game warmups after that? I posed that question here and never got an answer?

We are starting our usual starters. Charleston is starting Reyne Smith (guard, 11.4 points), Dalton Bolon (guard, 13.2 points), Ryan Larson (guard, 10.5 points), Jaylon Scott (guard, 4.5 points), and Ante Brzovic (forward, 10.6 points). Despite starting four guards, they are elite at rebounding.

Marshall is wearing the boot. He is on the bench. He is not the same player who was on crutches last week.

Edit - we are down 1 with 3:48 left in first half. AE has really come alive the last few minutes and has taken over the game.

update - we are down 2 at the half. AE is playing great. They really are not doubling him, so he is going off (23 pts and 5 threes). Interesting mix of players we are using. JQ has not played the last 10 minutes. BW has about 11 minutes and has a couple of threes. We have seen GB play the last 10 minutes (no pts, but no mistakes either). Early in the game, JQ got beat badly on several drives and I wonder if Speedy wanted some more size in the game (just wondering bc you certainly would not expect JQ to sit out for so long).

2 fouls a piece on Carlos and Thomas making Speedy go deeper into the bench. Some real nice minutes from Washington.

Estrada obviously phenomenal. Need some more help from Dubar and the bigs in 2nd half

Ahah - did not recall JQ picked up a second foul. That explains GB getting 10 minutes with AM out hurt. Yes Dutch, I agree, we need more from Williams and Dubar in the 2nd half.

Stats tell the story too. Charleston limited to 35 points after scoring 46 in first half. They tried to comeback shooting the trey. Bad move they shot 5-31 beyond the arc. That tells the story.

Big W on the road! Carlos and Dubar HUGE in the second half.
Congrats to Speedy and the staff!
We better get Estrada practicing free throws. Those two missed one and ones should have been more crucial.

Tremendous credit to Speedy and the staff! To score 41 pts in the 2nd half with only 2 coming from Estrada was really impressive. Carlos really growing up before our eyes, starting to see why Speedy has been so steadfast in his confidence to play the kid. Absolutely no fear, LOVED how he wanted the ball in his hands down the stretch...even got a huge rebound with like 1:30 left. Also how do we get Dubar to bottle that 2nd half and bring that level of effort on a more consistent basis?? What an x-factor he can be when he's on. On the Estrada FTs... between the George Mason game and tonight hope it doesn't get into his head in the next big spot.

Conference really seems to be turning into a 3-team race b/w us, Charleston and Towson (I know UNCW is right there but after what we saw last week don't think that team has the offensive firepower to keep up). Makes that Towson game on Thurs that much more critical...if Hofstra loses very likely going to be locked into at best that 2-3 spot, and beating Towson and Charleston back to back in March is gonna be super tough. Now if Hofstra could somehow win out and someone else picks off Charleston...

But we can worry about all that later, and celebrate a great win today!

We won 85-81. Estrada (25), Dubar (18 to end a five game streak of scoring single-digits), Thomas (17), and Carlos (15) combined for 75. They are our first group of four teammates to score at least 15 since Estrada, Abayomi Iyiola, Jalen Ray, and Dubar in a 87-80 win at James Madison on January 9, 2022. Barrouk scored 6, and each forward had 2 points and 1 rebound. Williams fouled out. We got outrebounded by 5, which is impressive. If I knew before the game that Williams and Boachie-Yiadom would combine for 2 rebounds, I would have expected us to get outrebounded by 15. Dubar had 8 rebounds, and Estrada and Thomas had 7. Estrada scored 2 in the second half by shooting 1-6 and free throws 0-2. He shot twos 4-13 and threes 5-9. Estrada (6), Boachie-Yiadom (4), and Carlos (3) had all of our assists. Estrada had 5 assists in the second half. Boachie-Yiadom had 3 blocks, Plotnikov had 2 in 4 minutes, and Thomas had 1. He is our second player from 2010-2011 to now to have at least 2 blocked shots in 4 or fewer minutes. Andre Walker did that three times in 2016-2017. We made half of our twos (23-46), half of our threes (11-22), and 75 percent of our free throws (6-8). Ante Brzovic led Charleston with 18 points. Ryan Larson had 15 points, 5 rebounds, and 6 assists to tie Estrada for the lead, but he shot 5-14 and fouled out. Reyne Smith (1-7), Dalton Bolon (0-6), Brzovic (1-6) and Larson (1-7) made and attempted about the same amount of threes. Bolon is their leading scorer, and he scored 7, shot 2-10, and committed 5 turnovers. He led all players with 9 rebounds.

Delaware won 81-78 hosting Northeastern. Monmouth won 79-64 at North Carolina A&T. Towson trailed 11-2 before winning 92-73 hosting William & Mary. Stony Brook won 71-66 at Hampton. Elon won 72-58 hosting Drexel. The CAA started the day with three teams undefeated or winless in conference, and now has none.

Are we all okay now? This is why we can't overreact to a loss to NC A&T or a blowout loss at Towson.

As I always say, it's a long season. Let them play the games.

Dubar was the key in this one. He had been so quiet for so long, but he balled out today to add to that nice balance they had at the top today:

Estrada 25 pts (not great at 9/22, but good enough, and 5/9 from 3 was great)
Dubar 18 pts (8/11)
Thomas 17 pts (7/13)
Carlos 15 pts (6/11)

What a win! Glad to see they took this one very seriously and paid Charleston back for last March. Now they have Towson to pay back from MLK Day next.

https://gohofstra.com/news/2023/1/28/me ... d-win.aspx is titled "Road Warriors! Hofstra Stuns #18 Charleston For Third-Ever Ranked Win." It says Thomas had 7 assists when it meant 7 rebounds.

https://gohofstra.com/boxscore.aspx?pat ... l&id=12120 is the box score. The attendance was 5,109. Charleston's announcer said they have a capacity of 5,200 and the rest of the season is sold out.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3sbYXFYydI is highlights.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uYn_NpxZg58 is the press conference.

https://cofcsports.com/news/2023/1/28/m ... fstra.aspx is titled "No. 18 Cougars Fall to Hofstra."

On Thursday, Charleston is at Drexel, who is trying to recover from losing by 14 at Elon. According to KenPom, Thursday will have the hardest remaining game for us and Charleston.

Through 64 of 117 games, the standings are:

1. Charleston: 9-1
2. Towson: 8-2 (1-0 vs. Hofstra)
3. Hofstra: 8-2
4. UNCW: 7-3
5. Drexel: 6-4
6. North Carolina A&T: 6-5
7. Stony Brook: 4-5
8. Delaware: 4-6 (1-1 vs. Northeastern and 1-0 vs. William & Mary)
9. William & Mary: 4-6 (0-1 vs. Delaware and 1-0 vs. Northeastern)
10. Northeastern: 4-6 (1-1 vs. Northeastern and 0-1 vs. William & Mary)
11. Hampton: 2-8
12. Elon: 1-8 (did not play Monmouth, win is against Drexel, Monmouth's win is against North Carolina A&T, and Drexel is higher)
13. Monmouth: 1-8

Now that Charleston's bubble has burst, I can see the Cougars losing another game or two before the playoffs.

I do not know why Cameron Holden did not start. He played 30 minutes. He became the first sub from 2010-2011 to now to have at least 24 points, at least 10 rebounds, at least 10 assists, and at least 3 blocks. I wonder if it is the first triple-double by a bench player in CAA history.

Every CAA game today had a team get their first CAA win, a team get their first CAA loss, a bench player having a triple-double, or a player scoring 34. Northeastern's Coleman Stucke and Stony Brook's Frankie Policelli scored 34.

If Hofstra had taken 31 shots from 3 out of 63 total shots and only made 5, while Charleston went 11/22 from 3 out of 68 shots and won, we would all be saying HU relied too much on the 3 again and Charleston had the better approach, and it's why their in first place, etc.

But it was just the opposite and great to see that approach from HU today.

The 11/22 from 3 on 68 total shots was actually HU, which took the right 3s.

The 5/31 from 3 on 63 total shots was actually Charleston, with four of their starters all almost equally bad from 3: 1/6, 1/7, 1,7, 0/6.
