2022-2023 Mid-Majors Who Could Get At-Large Bids

Post by EvanJ »

Joe Lunardi expects the AAC, ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, MWC, Pac-12, SEC, and WCC to get multiple bids. This post includes the other 23 conferences. Rankings refer to the NET unless otherwise specified. Teams are in alphabetical order:

Charleston (Colonial Athletic Association):
Good:
Ranked
9 seed from Joe Lunardi, so he would give them at-large consideration with a CAA Tournamentt loss
1 loss, which was at North Carolina (34th)
3-0 vs. Quadrant 2 including defeating Virginia Tech
Win over Kent State could help if both teams need at-large bids
Bad:
49th
22nd in Conference NET
Best remaining opponent is us in 103rd
Last five games are against bad enough teams that they could fall while winning
Would need to be chosen over better teams from better conferences to get an at-large bid if they needed it and teams were chosen now

Florida Atlantic (Conference USA):
Good:
13th
1 loss
10th in Conference NET
4-1 vs. Quadrants 1 and 2 including two wins over North Texas, who is 47th
SOS 72nd
Won at Florida (48th)
Bad:
Lost by 13 at Ole Miss, who is 8-9, and will probably have their record get worse from SEC games
Not getting recognition, as they are unranked (we will see if that changes tomorrow), and get a 12 seed from Joe Lunardi

Kent State (Mid-American):
Good:
38th
Only losses are by 2 at Charleston (who has 1 loss), by 5 at Houston (has 1 loss), and by 7 at Gonzaga (who has 3 losses)
Bad:
No Quadrant 1 or 2 wins
Best win is hosting Toledo (111th)
Do not have any remaining games against a team in the Top 110
SOS 130th, which will probably get worse
17th in Conference NET

North Texas (Conference USA):
Good:
SOS 43rd
4 losses that were all to teams with 5 or fewer losses, and 3 were close
Could lose the CUSA Final to Florida Atlantic without it being a bad loss
Two games against Alabama-Birmingham (UAB) (74th) and two games against Charlotte (82nd) are better opponents than who other mid-majors have left.
10th in Conference NET
Bad:
47th
Lost 63-33 at Saint Mary's
Lost to Florida Atlantic twice in chances to get great wins

Sam Houston State (Western Athletic):
Good:
Won at Oklahoma (45th) and at Utah (64th)
Bad:
46th
Lost by 18 at Nevada and by 14 at Oklahoma State
5 losses
3-3 in the WAC, which is 11th in Conference NET
No more games against teams in the Top 115

The numbers think Florida Atlantic should get in easily, while humans think Charleston is the best of the five. Sam Houston State could get included in bubble lists to be generous, but it would be shocking if they got an at-large bid.
