The Athletic's Tiers of Men's Basketball Coaches

Post by EvanJ »

It is from https://theathletic.com/3619418/2022/09 ... ngs-tiers/ but you have to pay. I will post the eligibility and the tiers. All coaches in Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, ACC, SEC, and Pac-12 are eligible if they meet the other criteria. Coaches in other conferences must have won a regular season title and/or conference tournament in the last three seasons. Coaches must be active, and they must have coached a complete season. Here are the tiers with coaches in alphabetical order:

Tier 1: 8 coaches
Tony Bennett (Virginia)
John Calipari (Kentucky)
Scott Drew (Baylor)
Mark Few (Gonzaga)
Tom Izzo (Michigan State)
Rick Pitino (Iona)
Kelvin Sampson (Houston)
Bill Self (Kansas)

Three of them are from conferences that do not make a coach automatically eligible, and the Big 12 is the only conference with more than one. There are none from the Big East, and Pitino is the only one from the region from Maine to Maryland.

Tier 2A: 10 coaches
Dana Altman (Oregon)
Rick Barnes (Tennessee)
Chris Beard (Texas)
Ed Cooley (Providence)
Mick Cronin (UCLA)
Leonard Hamilton (Florida State)
Sean Miller (Xavier)
Eric Musselman (Arkansas)
Matt Painter (Purdue)
Bruce Pearl (Auburn)

Tier 2B: 2 coaches
Jim Boeheim (Syracuse)
Bob Huggins (West Virginia)

Tier 3: 22 coaches
Randy Bennett (Saint Mary's)
Mike Brey (Notre Dame)
Hubert Davis (North Carolina)
Jamie Dixon (TCU)
Greg Gard (Wisconsin)
Anthony Grant (Dayton, formerly VCU in the CAA)
Chris Holtmann (Ohio State)
Juwan Howard (Michigan)
Dan Hurley (Connecticut)
James Jones (Yale)
Tommy Lloyd (Arizona)
Thad Matta (Butler)
Fran McCaffery (Iowa)
Greg McDermott (Creighton)
Niko Medved (Colorado State)
Porter Moser (Oklahoma)
Nate Oats (Alabama)
Shaka Smart (Marquette, formerly VCU in the CAA)
Kevin Willard (Maryland)
Buzz Williams (Texas A&M)
Brad Underwood (Illinois)
Mike Young (Virginia Tech)

I am not typing everybody. Jim Larranaga, who coached George Mason to the Final Four and now coaches Miami, is in Tier 4. CAA coaches Pat Kelsey (Charleston), Martin Ingelsby (Delaware), and Pat Skerry (Towson) are in Tier 5, along with Boston College's Earl Garnt who came from Charleston. Bill Coen (Northeastern), Takayo Siddle (UNCW), and Zach Spiker (Drexel) are in Tier 6, along with Mark Byington (James Madison) and Bashir Mason (Saint Peter's, played for Drexel from 2003 to 2007). 155 coaches were rated. The bottom tier was Tier 7, and it had 11 coaches including Patrick Ewing (Georgetown).
