Re: Tournament Closed to Public
I just heard Joe on WFAN and they were discussing the options and how this tourney should have been postponed. Also discussed the idea of extending scholarships Joe said there’s more reasons not to then for this. They played the Devils advocate here. He lamented about Buie and Eli getting short changed

May still get a bracket even if we don't get a tournament:

I like the comment that the teams secret play the game somewhere. Got to love it!Wags wrote:May still get a bracket even if we don't get a tournament:

Would much rather have written about what might've happened on Selection Sunday today and previewing Hofstra's next game, but wrote something sort of on the season and more on Hofstra dealing with the NCAAT being canceled after speaking with Joe on the phone for about 10 minutes on Friday.

To Wags, Thanks for the great article. Also, thanks for your coverage of HU all season long.

Thanks, Shadow. Appreciate it.The Shadow wrote:To Wags, Thanks for the great article. Also, thanks for your coverage of HU all season long.
Coach liked the piece and thanked me for what he said I do for he and HU, but I replied:
"You guys actually do more for me - Hofstra basketball has long been my favorite thing to cover and to write about."
That's the TRUTH!
p.s. I followed Hofstra Hoops as a Hofstra student, as an alum, when I had season tickets for 7 years in sec. 109, Row B, and now doing this. So, today's frustrating. But hey, this is a medical national emergency. Keeping people healthy should be the priority. It's sucks, but it's conceivable that the tourney could've spread the virus to tens of thousands and made this situation far worse.
Re: Tournament Closed to Public
This is so good, I told him he should send it to CBS Sports and the Turner Networks, who should then hire him to work on future One Shining Moments.

For the HU fans here, note the first five seconds and toward the end at the 2:46 mark!
It's really great, but it makes me long even more for a Selection Sunday and NCAAT we'll never have.
I always want March to go slowly and to take it all in. This year, I'm ready for mid-April.

Lunardi's final projection in the East: https://twitter.com/ESPNLunardi/status/ ... 1483214852
(14) Hofstra vs (3) Villanova in Albany.
And if not (6) Penn State, then a possible rematch with (11) UCLA, to get to the Sweet Sixteen at MSG.
Figures.

Simulated NCAA tourney: https://www.espn.com/mens-college-baske ... played-out
They have both of my alma maters as 14 seeds taking down 3 seeds. Figures, the first year they both make it in the same year and the simulation has both pulling off big first-round upsets in the same year... yet, no tournament. (But, the simulation has both losing to 6 seeds next).
No. 14 Hofstra over No. 3 Villanova
Whewwwwww. Here we go. Liberty over Auburn was fun, but now we're popping. Hofstra, making its first NCAA tournament appearance since the 2001 tournament, pulls off a massive upset, taking out Jay Wright's team in the first round. This is Hofstra's first tournament win in program history.
No. 14 Bradley over No. 3 Michigan State
Down goes Izzo! BPI remained high on Michigan State until the very end -- it gave the Spartans the best chance to win it all among Big Ten teams, despite a No. 3 seed. But that guarantees nothing. And instead, Cassius Winston's season ends with a very disappointing upset loss.
No. 6 Penn State over No. 14 Hofstra
Hofstra's first tournament win will be its only tournament win, at least this year. The Nittany Lions have completely shaken off the rough end to their season -- though they had the incredible fortune to play Hofstra instead of Villanova here -- and are moving on.
I think Hofstra would've had a great chance against Villanova. But I think if it came to this, they'd have beaten Penn State a little easier than Nova. Penn State had a good start, but were ripe for an upset. Not convinced they'd have actually beaten Villanova had that been the matchup, even though I do think they would have at least given Nova a battle. Nova was pretty good, but might have been weak for a 3 seed and Hofstra a little stronger than a typical 14 seed.
No. 6 Virginia over No. 14 Bradley
Tony Bennett's team takes advantage of an easier-than-expected opponent and discards the Braves. The Cavaliers are moving on.
Although I think this would've been a wide-open tournament and one of the most fun and interesting ones in a long time, I think this simulation is a little out there. It has no 1 or 2 seeds and just one 3 seed in the Elite 8. I didn't see any of the predicted Final Four teams (Wisconsin, Maryland, BYU, Virginia) as legit Final Four teams this year (maybe Maryland, but not really). And Wisconsin over BYU for a national title seems out there. But the simulation also can't be wrong, because we'll never know!

Listen, as far as I'm concerned, we're national champs. I want the NCAA championship banner hung up in November!

Ha! We do stake a claim to 1/68th of the title, anyway.Flying Dutchmen wrote:Listen, as far as I'm concerned, we're national champs. I want the NCAA championship banner hung up in November!

Yes National Champs what a dream but I also think we probably had a better chance of beating PSU then Villanova.
Re: Tournament Closed to Public
No surprise here - sounding more like what was expected here regarding this year's winter sports seniors coming back:
https://twitter.com/JonRothstein/status ... 5707444226
It's frankly the right move by the NCAA. In basketball, seniors really played the whole season. It's only a game or a few games in the postseason that they missed. Shouldn't give an entire year back for that.

Here's another one: https://www.sltrib.com/sports/2020/03/1 ... ament-was/
(3) Duke over (14) Hofstra: The Pride’s first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2001 is a short one, although this could be interesting given Hofstra can score.
Final Four:
Duke over Seton Hall:
Kentucky over Michigan State:

Lost some respect for Lunardi over this one. Since noon today, he's been tweeting a mix of simulations and his predictions for every game based on his final bracketology (that part is pretty cool).
But I really thought he knew Hofstra way better than this! C'mon Joe!

Not to worry Wags Joe knows we are a good second half team. We will bounce back
