Strategy For Intentionally Missing Free Throws

Post by EvanJ »

After their comeback to win 98-96 at UNC with an intentionally missed free throw in regulation and unintentionally missed free throw in overtime that both resulted in offensive rebounds and baskets, Duke's Tre Jones told Duke's strategy for intentionally missing free throws, which I think is good. Can you guess the strategy? I'll post the answer later, and then you can say if you want Hofstra to do it.

UNC led by 13 with 4 minutes left in regulation, went down 5 in overtime, went up 5 with 21 seconds left in overtime, and lost. Justin Pierce, who transferred from W&M to UNCW, had 11 points and 4 rebounds in 20 minutes.

To tell people other than Polito, Duke's strategy is to miss to the side. That has multiple advantages compared to aiming for the front rim. If a player aims for the front rim and shoots too far, he could accidentally make it. If a player aims to the side, shooting it a little longer than intended won't make it go in. If a whole team knows the strategy of where the shot will be, it makes it easier to get an offensive rebound.
