MBB: Game 22 vs. Drexel on 1/25/2020 at 4:00 P.M.

https://gohofstra.com/news/2020/1/24/me ... rexel.aspx is Hofstra's preview titled "MBB: Hofstra Returns To Action Saturday Versus Drexel."

https://s3.amazonaws.com/sidearm.sites/ ... game22.pdf is Hofstra's Game Notes.

Desure Buie is 5 points behind 32nd place Ameen Tanksley and 21 points behind 31st place Richie Swartz.

https://drexeldragons.com/news/2020/1/2 ... ntest.aspx is Drexel's preview titled "Dragons Head to Hofstra For Key CAA Contest."

https://s3.amazonaws.com/drexeldragons. ... _notes.pdf is Drexel's Game Notes.

https://static.caasports.com/custompage ... m#team.ind has Drexel's statistics.

James Butler leads the NCAA with 247 rebounds. When it comes to rebounds, the Butler family did it. His dad Vernon was teammates with David Robinson on Navy. When they graduated, Robinson had the most career rebounds in the CAA with Vernon Butler second, and it remained that way for over 30 years until Gustys finished with more than Vernon Butler, and last season Cacok knocked Vernon Butler down to fourth in CAA history. James Butler played 25 minutes in 4 games for Navy before transferring to Drexel. With three seasons at Drexel, he won't break Robinson's CAA record, but he could still be the eleventh player in CAA history to 1,000 rebounds. James' sister Natalie transferred from Georgetown to Connecticut to George Mason, and as a graduate student in 2017-2018 she broke the NCAA record for rebounds by a woman in a season. She won A10 Player of the Year and was taken in the WNBA Draft.

Camren Wynter, who is from Hempstead, has a chance to break the CAA career assists record. He's on pace to finish close to Navy's Doug Wojcik, who was teammates with Robinson and Vernon Butler. At his season average, Wynter would need 82 games to break Wojcik's record. Giving him 32 games per season, (13 nonconference, 18 CAA, and 1 CAA Tournament) would give him 73 games left. Therefore he needs CAA Tournament wins, other postseason tournaments, and/or to increase his average to break Wojcik's record, but it's possible.

http://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=289708 will have statistics.

Today's CAA schedule and lines:

Delaware at Northeastern at 12:00 P.M. moved up from 4:00 P.M. (Northeastern favored by 7)
We are favored by 8.5
James Madison at Elon at 4:00 P.M. (James Madison favored by 1)
UNCW at Charleston at 4:00 P.M. (Charleston favored by 13)
Towson at William & Mary at 4:00 P.M. (William & Mary favored by 5)

Huge game for us and Drexel. We need to right the ship right here and now to stay in the hunt for first place and even a top four seed. Log jam at 5-3 and we need to separate ourselves.
Time for the seniors, especially Eli to step up...we also need a big game from Ray who has been somewhat invisible lately and Kante needs to slow down their big guy and get another double double.
ESPN has us favored by 8 points at home...A MUST WIN!

At the first timeout, Hofstra should honor Buie for breaking our record with 129 games. The record of 128 is shared by Jenkins, Lester, and Buie. Having 8 games in an injury redshirt season helped, but even if you subtract 8, Buie would break the record in the second-to-last game before the CAA Tournament. Ray is on pace to graduate with more than Jenkins and Lester. The CAA Record Book does not have a games played section. Andrey Semenov, who played for James Madison for six seasons including a redshirt season with 7 games and a redshirt season with 4 games, played 132, so Buie should pass Semenov on Thursday February 13 hosting Charleston on CBS Sports Network. Four games after today will be more than two weeks after today because we do not play on February 6 before hosting Northeastern.

I think it is more key for Hofstra than it is Drexel. I also think your guys wont be happy with how the Delaware game went and will be angry today. Its a bad matchup for Drexel. I think this will be a runaway. Spiker is also 4-26 on the road in CAA play. As a Drexel fan I am praying we play 100% zone today, but I doubt that happens.

Delaware and Northeastern are tied at 21, and a majority (11) of Delaware's points are by Ryan Allen and Johnny McCoy, neither of whom scored against us. Jordan Roland and third leading scorer Bolden Brace haven't scored yet, and Guillen Smith is starting for the first time. Shaquille Walters, who normally starts, hasn't started or been one of the first three subs, so I'm guessing he's unavailable. Myles Franklin, who averages 3.8 points, leads all scorers with 8 and hasn't missed.

Edit: Roland scored 14 in the last 7:34 of the half, and Northeastern leads 42-29. Bolden Brace, who averages 10.9 points and 6.5 rebounds, has no points and 1 rebound. Tyson Walker, who averages 2.0 rebounds, is tied for Northeastern's lead with 3. Myles Franklin, who averages 3.8 points, scored 8 in the first 11:14 by making 2 threes and 1 two without a miss, but he hasn't shot since then. Ryan Allen leads Delaware with 8, but he shot 2-7. Justyn Mutts scored 2, so at that rate it would take him 7.5 games to score the 30 he did against us. He leads all players with 5 rebounds. Northeastern shot great and committed only 3 turnovers. Rebounds are tied at 14, which is low. It's a pace for 28, and the NCAA average is 36.0.

Edit: Northeastern had deja vu from last Saturday. Last Saturday they blew a 16 point lead at 57-41 and lost 76-74. Today they blew a 16 point lead at 58-42 and lost 76-74. Nate Darling, who scored 11 at us, more than tripled that with 34. Justyn Mutts, who scored 30 against us, scored a fifth of that with 6. Forwards Mutts, Dylan Painter (4 points), and Collin Goss (no shots) combined for only 10 points. Kevin Anderson had 12 points from 4-5 shooting, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2 steals. He shot free throws 4-6 including missing 2 with 22.2 seconds left that weren't costly. Jordan Roland scored 27. Maxime Boursiquot scored a career-high 18. Tyson Walker had 11 points and 6 assists, but shot 4-12 and had 4 turnovers and 4 fouls. Bolden Brace, who entered averaging 10.9 points and 6.5 rebounds, had 2 points and 3 rebounds. Northeastern was -20 in his 28 minutes and +18 in the 12 minutes he didn't play.

We went from up 4-2 to down 8-4 to up 108. In the first 8:12, Drexel has 6 turnovers, and we have 3.

Edit: We went on a 10-0 run to go up 14-8, Coletrane Washington made 3, and Pemberton scored 4 to go up 18-11 with 8:52 left in the half and make Drexel call timeout. Buie has 2 points on 1-5 shooting. Drexel has 9 turnovers.

Edit: Drexel scored 5 to go down 2, and we called timeout with 8:17 left. It's rare for each team to call timeout within 35 seconds other than late in the game.

We lead 33-32 at halftime. With 25 seconds left, Pemberton missed a layup. With 22 seconds left, Schutte got the offensive rebound (Kante had 2 fouls). The shot clock resets to 20 after an offensive rebound, so Hofstra had to shoot but could have shot too late to give Drexel a chance. Silverio, who had 1 missed three at that time, made a 2 with 19 seconds left. Camren Wynter scored 2 with 2 seconds left, so the margin is the same as if Silverio hadn't shot then and Hofstra missed with a couple of seconds left. Both teams have shot field goals .500 and not attempted many threes, with Drexel 1-5 and us 2-4. Drexel committed 7 fouls, but late in the half they stopped fouling. We attempted only 6 free throws, and Buie, Pemberton, and Kante made 1 of 2. Drexel shot free throws 7-8. Rebounds are low for both teams, with 13 for us and 12 for them. Drexel has 10 turnovers, but none of them late in the half. We have 6 turnovers and a bad assist-to-turnover ratio because we only have 4 assists. Coburn, Buie, Ray, and Schutte have 1. Pemberton shot 4-6 and scored 9 without attempting a three. He had only 1 rebound and no assists. Coburn scored 7 on 3-4 shooting including making his only 3, and led us with 5 rebounds. Kante scored 7 on 3-4 field goals and 1-2 free throws. He had only 2 rebounds, and had 2 fouls and 2 turnovers. Buie had 6 points on 2-8 field goal shooting, missed a free throw, and had 1 assist as I said before. Ray scored 2 on 1-4 shooting, and Silverio scored 2 with Hofstra's last shot. Silverio led the bench with 6 minutes). Schutte (4 minutes), Burgess (4 minutes), and Trueheart (1 minute) didn't shoot. That's only 15 bench minutes. Nobody played 20 minutes for us. Coburn had 55 seconds off, Pemberton had 1:44 off, and Buie had 2:02 off. Buie, Ray, and Kante had 2 rebounds each, and Coburn with 5 was our only player with more.

Drexel was led by James Butler with 10 points on 5-7 shooting, but his 4 rebounds are only about a third of his average of 11.8. Camren Wynter scored 8 on 4-6 shooting and had 2 steals, but only 2 assists, no rebounds, and 3 turnovers. Five Drexel players scored 2, 3, or 4, and two Drexel players were scoreless. Sam Green started and played 12 minutes without scoring.

I didn't watch the beginning of the second half, and we went down 8. It's now 45-37 with 14:30 left, and we have the ball. We shot 2-11 to start the half, including 0-3 by Buie to make him 2-11. Butler has 16 points on 8-10 shooting and has 8 rebounds, meaning he has 4 in the second half.

Edit: We went on a 7-0 run in 1:15 to go down 45-44 and make Drexel call timeout. Each team has 2 timeouts left.

UNCW came back and leads by 3 at Charleston. Towson leads 50-39 at W&M.

Edit: It's 46-46 with 11:23 left. Buie shot 2-13, and Ray shot 2-9. Pemberton (4-8) and Kante (5-7) should shoot, but Kante is on the bench with 3 fouls.
Schutte had an offensive rebound and basket.

Charleston retook the lead hosting UNCW.

Edit: Butler had a three-point play, and after Buie shot an air ball, Coburn made a 3 to tie it at 49-49 and give him a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. We double-teamed Butler, and Drexel called their second-to-last timeout with 10:15 left.

Edit: Coletrane Washington scored to go up 51-49, and Ray made a three for our first lead since before Drexel's first basket of the half with 19:43 left. Pemberton made 1 of 2 free throws to make us a possibly costly 4-8. We tipped a pass to force a shot clock violation to get the ball up 53-51 with 7:57 left. Drexel had a shot clock violation after winning the opening tip.

Edit: We're on a 13-0 run to go up 62-51, and Drexel called their last timeout with 5:36 left. Buie made a layup to improve his shooting to 3-15. Coburn has 22, and it's now a 15-0 run to lead 64-51.

Edit: It's a 17-0 run to go up 66-51. The last timeout is with 2:33 left, and Drexel will shoot 2 free throws to try to end their drought. Three-point shooting is a big advantage for us at 6-13 and Drexel at 2-14. Drexel entered allowing opponents to shoot threes only .298.

What a great game by Coburn. He was everywhere. He was scoring inside and outside but his hustle really carried the team to the win.

Buie had an off night shooting tonight but still was active defensively. I’m not sure what up with Eli - he can’t hit anything outside of a layup. I really though the NE game was going to be a springboard for him, but it’s been quite the opposite since.

Kante is turning into a very reliable player. He is starting to really find his groove (had a great driving layup) and unlike Taylor last year we have him for two more years. Hoping he continues to grow.

A very needed win tonight - glad they were able to take control in the 2nd half and cruise for the last few minutes.

Probably best game by Coburn since he knocked down those 7 or 8 3's in the first half of a game last year. Maybe JMU at the Mack.

I really like this post Pride 97 u r spot on this was Coburn's moment in the sun this year. Except for his last game he has really upped his game making big time plays on both sides of the court grabbing O rebounds and hitting three's. His effort is second to none and even when his shot is off he still plays hard.

Kante every game seems to play a bit better and I think the difference is that he's playing with a lot of confidence. He's really feeling it now and doesn't even hesitate to take a mid range shot now because a lot of teams show him no respect 12 feet out and he's hitting some of them.

I feel the same way about Burgess that he's a relentless defender and that's his strength now but he has to show people he can score and in this game he got a bit rattled and made an errant pass that led to a breakaway layup. Joe pulled him right after that.

Eli has totally lost his confidence in his jump shot. He even looked a bit tentative from the foul line. I'm sure they're looking at his release or just his mechanics in general but he's tough when he's in the paint and his shot will come back.

I don't think anyone talked about the fact that if we would have beaten Delaware on Thursday that we would be tied for first place today. Lots of upsets that again speaks to the parity of this league. We need to stay close because apparently people have found the secret in beating W&M.

Coburn scored 24 shooting field goals 8-10, threes 4-4, and free throws 4-4. He tied James Butler for the lead with 12 rebounds. He had 1 block, which gave him sole possession of the team lead with 9 (0.41 per game). Schutte has 8 blocks. Kante shot field goals 6-8 and free throws 1-2 to score 13, but only had 4 rebounds. Pemberton scored only 12 because he didn't shoot much, and he had only 3 rebounds and no assists. He was +3, so we were +10 in the 4:51 he didn't play. Buie started shooting 2-14 before ending with 3 of 6 to finish 5-20. He had 12 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 block, and 3 steals. It ended his streak of 44 games without a block. His previous block was on December 19, 2018 at Stony Brook. It was his seventh career block, and his second block at home. His previous block at home was against Elon on January 28, 2016, and players who played then and didn't have redshirt seasons aren't in college anymore. Ray shot 3-11 and scored 7. He had 5 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals. Silverio and Schutte scored 2, and Burgess and Trueheart didn't shoot. The bench played 21 minutes with 4 points, 3 field goal attempts (2 by Silverio and 1 by Schutte), 2 rebounds (by Schutte), 1 assist (by Schutte), 3 fouls (2 by Trueheart and 1 by Silverio), 1 turnover (by Burgess), and 1 steal (by Burgess).

James Butler shot field goals 10-13 and free throws 1-1. He had 21 points and 12 rebounds, but nobody else on Drexel did great. Zach Walton scored 14, but shot 2-6 twos/2-5 threes/4-11 field goals/4-6 free throws. He had 4 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal. He entered averaging 0.8 blocks, but didn't have any. Butler had their only block. Camren Wynter scored 10 by shooting 5-11, missing all 3 threes, and not attempting a free throw. He had 3 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 fouls, 5 turnovers, and 3 steals. Coletrane Washington and T.J. Bickerstaff scored 5, Make Okros and Tim Perry Jr. scored 2, and Sam Green and Matey Juric did not score.

We made our last 6 free throws to go up to 10-14 (.714), which is below our average, but better than when we were shooting free throws 4-8. In the second half, we had 5 steals and only 1 turnover. We finished with more steals (8) than turnovers (7), and committed only 13 fouls (the NCAA average is 17.5). We had 4 more rebounds, 10 fewer turnovers, and 3 fewer fouls. That gave us 11 more field goal attempts and 1 more free throw attempt. Our season points differential is negative for field goals and very positive for free throws, so our +13 from field goals and +0 (10 each) from free throws is unusual. Points off turnovers were 21 to 4! We had more second chance points, 19 to 12, and more points in the paint, 38 to 30. Drexel had more bench points, 12 to 4, and more fast break points, 5 to 4. I would think some fast breaks come from turnovers, so I'm surprised that we had 17 more points off turnovers and 1 fewer fast break point. We shot threes 6-13 (.462), which is better than we shot twos (22/48 = .458) against a team who was allowing opponents to shoot threes .298. In Drexel's first 20 games, their opponents' highest three-point field goal percentage was .381. This week they let Northeaster shoot threes .529 and us shoot threes .462. Their opponents' three-point field goal percentage rose from .288 to .304 in two games.

I already posted about Delaware's comeback from down 58-42 to win 76-74 at Northeastern. Here are the other three CAA games.

Towson won 70-58 at W&M. Towson got most of their points from three players as Jason Gibson led all scorers with 21, Brian Fobbs scored 17, and Allen Betrand scored 16. Dennis Tunstall led all players with 8 rebounds, but only took one shot, which he made to score 2. Nathan Knight scored 20 and shot okay. He and Andy Van Vliet tied for the team lead with 6 rebounds. Van Vliet was their other double-digit scorer with 10. Point guard Thornton Scott played 31 minutes without scoring and had only 1 assist. W&M shot threes 4-21 (.190) and had only 24 rebounds. Their leading rebounders have 6 is tied for the fewest by their leading rebounder(s) in a home game in Knight's four seasons. W&M trailed by 2 when Towson went on a 12-2 run in the last 4:27.

Elon led most of their game hosting JMU, led 60-43 with 10:38 left, and won 82-73. Elon didn't shoot field goal well, but JMU's 28 fouls let Elon shoot free throws 26-31 (.839). Matt Lewis led all scorers with 33 and made 6 threes, but he entered averaging 3.9 assists and didn't have any. Julien Wooden was their only other double-digit scorer with 10. Darius Banks (9 points) and Deshon Parker (5 points) combined to shoot field goals 4-21 (.190). Dwight Wilson had 6 points and 6 rebounds to be well below his averages of 10.6 points and 10.5 rebounds. He didn't shoot much and didn't miss a field goal, but he missed both free throws. He committed his first foul with 17:09 left in the half, his second foul 4 seconds later, and sat the rest of the half. He finished with 3 fouls, which doesn't normally mean a lot of time missed due to foul trouble, but in this case he played only 19 minutes. Marcus Sheffield II shot great, led Elon with 31 points, and had 9 rebounds. Hunter McIntosh had a double-double with 12 points and 10 assists. Hunter Woods had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. If Sheffield II had one more rebound, they would have had three double-doubles! Elon had 2 more rebounds and 5 fewer turnovers.

Charleston led 36-28 with 1:50 left in the half and 36-32 at halftime. Their lead went back up to 8, but UNCW tied it with 16:33 left and took the lead with 14:51 left. Their lead peaked at 5 with 14:20 left. Charleston went up 1, but UNCW led or was tied for most of the time until Charleston went up 63-61 with 3:33 left. Two free throws by Jaylen Sims with 36 seconds left were the final lead change, which put UNCW up 65-64. Grant Riller made a three with 4 seconds left to go down 1, and UNCW made 1 free throw to win 72-70. Riller led Charleston in scoring, but it was only 16. Brevin Galloway (12 points) and Jaylen McManus (10 points) scored double-digits but combined to shoot field goals 6-24 (.250). Zep Jasper shot 1-7 and fouled out with 2 points. Charleston's second best player was DeAngelo Epps, who made 2 threes and 2 twos to score 10 without a miss. Charleston had 47 rebounds and 5 turnovers. I don't have a way of finding out, but it must be rare to have 9.4 times as many rebounds as turnovers in a loss. Sam Miller scored 6 and didn't shoot well, but was the only double-digit rebounder with 14. McManus had 8 rebounds. Shykeim Phillips led all players with 17 points, shot well, and had 6 rebounds. Ty Gadsden tied Riller for the second most points with 16, and he led UNCW with 4 assists. Mike Okauru had 6 points, shot 3-10, and had no assists which is shocking because he leads UNCW in assists. Marten Linssen had 8 points and led UNCW with 8 rebounds, but shot poorly and committed 4 fouls in 17 minutes. Imajae Dodd, who subs for Linssen, had 6 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 blocks. Charleston attempted 17 more field goals, but made only 3 more, and UNCW attempted 17 more free throws. Charleston's problem was that they shot threes 6-33 (.182).

The packed CAA standings are:

W&M 7-2
Charleston 6-3 (2-0 three-way head-to-head)
Hofstra 6-3 (1-1 three-way head-to-head)
Towson 6-3 (0-2 three-way head-to-head)
Drexel 5-4 (1-1 three-way head-to-head, beat W&M)
Northeastern 5-4 (1-1 three-way head-to-head, lost to W&M, 2-1 vs. teams tied for second)
Delaware 5-4 (1-1 three-way head-to-head, lost to W&M, 1-2 vs. teams tied for second)
Elon 2-7 (beat UNCW)
UNCW 2-7
JMU 1-8

Winning at us and Northeastern didn't move Delaware up if you factor in the tiebreakers.

Edit: The CAA's Bill Potter corrected me about 6 and 7. After Drexel's win over W&M makes Drexel 5, it goes back to the beginning and Delaware wins head-to-head over Northeastern. Northeastern, who was picked third, and JMU, who was picked fourth would both play in the First Round if the season was over now.

Great game for Coburn. If only he could do that consistently. They are a vastly different team when he's a significant contributor vs. when he's not that productive.
Same as in the past with him, but even more so this year. Buie was 5/20, putting up airballs, Ray only 3/11, and yet they still get to 72 pts and win with Coburn getting it going.

But they won this game with the defense, which continues to be much better this season than we've seen in past years under Mihalich. Winning games in the 60s wasn't thought of under him before. They're doing that this year. Today, they give up the bad 11-2 run at the start of the second half and they fall behind 45-37, and then really didn't allow Drexel much (just 14 pts over the final 14:45).

Down 51-49, with 9:56 left, they scored 17 straight before Drexel scored again, on a FT, with 2:33 left. And Drexel's next basket didn't come until there was 2:09 left. By then, it was already game over. I'll have to go back and check, but Joe said it was 11 straight stops. To win in D.C., that's what they're going to need. It's good to know for that tourney that the D is becoming more and more capable of doing that against CAA teams. Even in the loss against Delaware on Thursday, it was around an 8-minute stretch in the first half that they held the Hens without a bucket. Those stretches are huge in a conference tourney. They're showing they can do that more and more. While people are talking about Coburn (and they should be), I saw a lot of defense turning into offense today... stops, steals and runouts... hence the 21-4 edge in pts off TOs today, which was the difference in a 13-pt. win.

We're allowing 2.6 points fewer than last season, which is a bigger improvement than the NCAA average of 1.1 fewer this season before yesterday, but our CAA ranks are worse this season. In points per game allowed we were fifth last season and are seventh now. In opponents' field goal percentage we were fourth last season and are ninth now.
