MBB: Game 21 - vs. Delaware (Thu 1/23, 6:30 pm)

Post by Wags »

Just wanted to get this thread started to make sure everyone who's coming to the game knows that it's at 6:30 pm, not the usual 7:00 pm start.

And to also let those who aren't coming to the game, but who have CBS Sports Network, know that the game will be televised there.

Thanks for the reminder Wags - I would have been planning for a 6:45 arrival.

It will be our first televised home game since February 16 or 18, 2017. In December 2016, we played Kentucky, and then I thought it was horrible that we weren't on TV for over two months, and I didn't know at the time that the CAA would lose its TV contract after that. We were supposed to end the 2016-2017 regular season Thursday at home-Saturday at home-Thursday away-Saturday away, with the first, second, and fourth of those on TV. However, I remember one of the games having a sudden change and not being televised, so that's why I said February 16 or 18.

https://gohofstra.com/news/2020/1/21/me ... twork.aspx is our preview titled "MBB: Hofstra Hosts Delaware Thursday On CBS Sports Network."

https://s3.amazonaws.com/sidearm.sites/ ... game21.pdf is our Game Notes.

Delaware has not written a preview but did make Game Notes at https://s3.amazonaws.com/bluehens.com/d ... fstra1.pdf

Hofstra opens as a 7 point favorite. Really no reason we shouldn’t win.

4-5 of those points due to us playing at home hopefully we will get a decent turnout on a Nationally televised game. Delaware is a decent team that likes to shoot the 3 ball and shoot at a .363 percentage. They have a size advantage now starting Painter who is 6'10" and Mutts who is 6'7" and is an animal rebounder. Maybe more then anything else we need to focus on our guards rebounding and not letting them getting 2nd chance shots. Statistically speaking they seem to do everything well except they give up more points 74.1 then they score 70.7(CAA stats). As already stated we should win this game and get ready for another tough game against Drexel surprise team of the league.

I would think the 6:30 start and the fact that it’s on tv would make it likely our worst crowd of the conference slate. Heck I may just stay home and watch it on tv. Also has to be harder for people who work to make it by 6:30 but obviously tv controls that so nothing Hofstra can do about it.

Well Hof Judge99 that's an option but when I can always want to support this team in person the team and coaches deserve this much. Just my own feeling and I don't live that far away!

Unfortunately this will be the first (and probably only) home game I am going to miss this year. Will be stuck at work so won't even be able to watch on tv.

Well that sucks we need all the fan support we can get such a positive to have fans backing this team. Unfortunate! This should be a good game.

HU by with a 149.5 O/U. Equates roughly to an expected 78-71 Hofstra win.

Big week for HU. Only 1-1 in the very small CAA sample at home thus far, so they really need to get both this week, tonight and Saturday, to have a winning CAA home record (rather than being a very mediocre 2-2 in the league at home) by that point. More importantly, they would finish the first half of CAA play on Sat. at 7-2, on pace for a very solid 14-4 season in conference play.

http://defiantlydutch.blogspot.com/2020 ... aware.html is Jerry Beach's "I'll Be Quirky: Delaware." KenPom predicts us to win 77-70.

http://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=289707 will have statistics. It says the game is at 7:00 P.M., so hopefully the statistics start at 6:30 P.M. (more like 6:35 P.M.) at tipoff. There was a game last week that StatBroadcast didn't work for about the first ten minutes.

Statistics for CAA games at 7:00 P.M. links:

Towson at Elon: http://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=283446 (Towson favored by 5.5, KenPom predicts Towson to win 79-75)

Drexel at Northeastern: http://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=277395 (Northeastern favored by 8.5, KenPom predicts Northeastern to win 73-66)

JMU at W&M: http://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=277395 (W&M favored by 9, KenPom predicts W&M to win 83-72)

UNCW and Charleston have off and play at Charleston on Saturday. After today and Saturday, all teams will have played the same amount of games, which won't be true again until the last week.

Streak first half for both teams:

7-0, UDel (to lead 14-5).
20-1, HU (to lead 27-17).
19-3, UDel (to lead 36-30).
8-1, HU (to end the half, down 38-37).

I don't believe in individual +/-, but this is an interesting one:
In a one-point game at halftime, Trueheart was a +20, playing 6:33 in the first half. He mainly played during much of that 20-1 HU run.
At the other end of the spectrum for HU, Coburn (12:29) was a -14. Buie (18:53, the most time for the Pride) was a +1.

First 8 fouls of the game were called on Delaware, but 9 of the last 11 of the half were called on Hofstra.

Now, 8-2, UDel to start the 2nd half (to lead, 46-39).

With us down 2, Delaware accidentally fouled with 6.1 left. Ray made 2 free throws. Kevin Anderson made a layup with 0.3 left to win 73-71. Delaware shot threes 0-8 in the second half, but we shot threes 2-8 and make a third of our field goals in the second half. Delaware shot field goals better and had 6 more rebounds. Buie's 8-18 was the best field goal percentage of our starters. He had 19 points and 6 assists. Kante had 16 points and 9 rebounds, but he shot field goals 4-11. After missing his first free throw, he made his last 8. His previous season-high and career-high was 6 free throws. We made 18 of 20 free throws.
Justyn Mutts was the star with 30 points by shooting field goals 14-17 and free throws 2-2, and he had 13 rebounds. Nate Darling and Ryan Allen scored well below their averages. Allen fouled out without scoring, which sounds horrible, but he had the best +/- on Delaware. Considering how little we use our bench, it's surprising that the best +/- on either team was Trueheart's +18.

Northeastern beat Drexel 85-52. Drexel did 60 points worse than in their last game.

Oy vey... 2 in a row - this team never seems to win big games at home lol

UD beating JM at his own game with talented transfers

And beat by a guy we wanted in Mutts - breakout game for him... why am I not surprised it’s against HU.

Fellas need to regroup - 2 very close losses, let’s turn them into wins next time

We need to tcb on Sat vs. DREXEL. Disappointing loss tonight...but good game to watch on national tv except for sparse crowd.

-2 in the second half though. I noted above, he was a +20 in the first half because the 6 1/2 minutes he played then were primarily during that 20-1 HU run. That run was all but wiped out by a 19-3 Delaware run in the first half. That's how this game went. Every time HU would go on a nice run, they'd give up a UDel big run, so it was basically an even game. They played well in spurts but just couldn't sustain anything. They did an awful job on Anderson's game-winner. Joe took blame for that. He said they worked on situational plays like that in practice yesterday and he said that didn't go well and then the same happened tonight to lose the game. No reason Anderson should get right down the lane so easily in that situation. They talked about it during the timeout before that, between the Ray FTs that tied it, but the players just didn't execute. Trueheart came real close to blocking that last shot, but Anderson got it just high enough to clear his hand and fall through the hoop to win the game.

Four straight games decided by two points (won the first two, lost the last two) -- first time in about 40 years that's happened for Hofstra. That streak started with the win at NU, which was part of NU's streak of four straight games decided by one possession for them. Just another wild year in the CAA in which you really have to be ready to play every single game. Just the type of league it is.

This is the first time Hofstra has lost consecutive games since the end of last season (CAA Finals and NIT) and the first time they've lost consecutive games against CAA opponents in about two years (1/20/18 at Charleston and 1/25/18 at home against Northeastern). They had also won 11 of 12 (10 straight in the regular season) against Delaware before tonight.
