Since Buie and Pemberton are starting to rack them up, I figured I'd start a thread to track these - 5 out of the past 6 weeks that either Buie or Pemberton was named either the POW or placed on the weekly Honor Roll.

2/24/20
PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Desure Buie, Hofstra
Buie earns his fourth player of the week accolade of the season after posting 26.5 points, 7.5 assists and 3.0 steals per game as Hofstra clinched a share of the CAA regular-season title and extended its winning streak to eight games. The senior started his week with a 26-point, 7-rebound, 3-steal effort in Hofstra’s win at Drexel. On Saturday, Buie led Hofstra to the Pride’s NCAA-best 11th road win of the season, posting 27 points, nine assists and six boards as Hofstra defeated Delaware, 78-62.

2/4/20
PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Desure Buie, Hofstra
For the third time this season, Buie earns player of the week accolades, this
time after leading Hofstra to a 2-0 road swing through Elon and William
& Mary. The senior opened the week with his third career double-double,
recording 18 points and 11 assists in a win at Elon before recording a gamehigh 22 points while handing out seven assists in Hofstra’s victory at William
& Mary. The win pulled the Pride into a three-way tie atop the CAA standings.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Desure Buie, Hofstra
For the second time this season, Buie earns player of the week honors, this time after averaging 25.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists in a 2-0 road trip for Hofstra. Buie keyed the Pride’s 82-76 comeback win at James Madison, scoring all 15 of his points in the second half. At Towson, Buie was 9-of-14 from the floor, including a 6-of-7 mark from 3-point range, finishing with a career-high 35 points in a 75-67 Hofstra victory.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Eli Pemberton, Hosftra
Pemberton led Hofstra with 23.0 points per game as the Pride picked up wins over Princeton and Manhattan to close the conference with a 9-4 record. The senior opened the week with a 27-point effort at Princeton, shooting 9-of-13 from the field to go along with five rebounds, three steals, and two assists in 87-72 win. On Sunday, Pemberton posted 19 points and five rebounds in the win over the Jaspers.

11/25/19
PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Desure Buie, Hofstra
Buie averaged 21.5 points, 6.0 assists, 3.5 steals and 3.0 rebounds per game in a 2-0 week for Hofstra. In the Pride’s 88-78 win at UCLA, the senior posted a career-high 29 points while adding seven assists, three steals and three rebounds. On Sunday night, Buie recorded 14 points, five assists and four steals in a 22-point win at Cal State Fullerton. For the week, Buie was 13-of-22 from the field and a perfect 15-of-15 at the free-throw line.

Eli Pemberton
Pemberton had a senior day to remember, pouring in a career-high 35 points and knocking down 5-of-7 3-pointers. For the week, Pemberton averaged a CAA-best 26.5 points, hitting 8-of-13 3-pointers.

2/17/20
HONOR ROLL
Eli Pemberton
Pemberton averaged 25.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.5 steals in a 2-0 week for Hofstra as the Pride solidified its grasp on first place in the CAA. The senior matched his career-high with 28 points against Charleston before adding 23 points and five boards versus UNCW.

2/10/20
HONOR ROLL
Desure Buie
Buie keyed Hofstra’s second-half rally in a 75-71 win over Northeastern. Buie had 19 of his team-high tying 22 points in the final 20 minutes of play as the Pride moved into sole possession of first place in the CAA.

1/28/20
HONOR ROLL
Tareq Coburn
Coburn posted a career-high 24 points to go along with 12 rebounds in Hofstra’s win over Drexel,
going 8-of-10 from the floor and a perfect 4-for-4 from 3-point range. On the week, Coburn averaged
14.5 points and 7.0 rebounds.

1/15/20
HONOR ROLL
Eli Pemberton
Pemberton posted a team-high 24 points in Hofstra’s 74-72 win at Northeastern, including the
game-winning jumper with 0.5 seconds to play. The senior was 10-of-16 from the floor, adding four
rebounds and two steals.

1/7/20
HONOR ROLL
Desure Buie, Hofstra
Buie posted 44 points in Hofstra’s 102-75 win over Elon, matching the sixth-best total in CAA history.
The senior was 15-of-19 from the field, hitting 6-of-8 3-pointers as he went over 1,000 career points.

12/16/19
HONOR ROLL:
Desure Buie, Hofstra
Buie led Hofstra to a 71-63 win over Stony Brook, posting a game-high 20 points and six assists. The senior was 6-of-14 from the field while adding two steals.

12/2/19
HONOR ROLL:
Eli Pemberton, Hofstra
Pemberton averaged 22.0 points and 5.5 rebounds in a 1-1 week for Hofstra. The senior equaled his career-high with 28 points as the Pride closed its west coast swing at San Diego. On Sunday, Pemberton posted 16 points as Hofstra cruised past Holy Cross, 91-69.

Riller doesn't have any. There have been eight weeks, and I counted ties as 0.5:

Knight and Riller were co-Players of the Week. Buie might have had the best week in CAA history if his 35 and 44 were consecutively rather than having a game in between. Furthermore, a week is normally Monday to Sunday, but last week the CAA included Monday games as part of the previous week so that week would have two games. If the days of the week for our games were the same but it was during nonconference play where different teams played on different days, Buie's 35 point game would have counted. Knight averaged 19.0 points, shot 17-23 (.739) including twos 15-18 (.833), and averaged 11.5 rebounds. Riller shot twos and threes .500. He had a worse field goal percentage than Buie, but averaged 29.5 points to Buie's 27.0. Furthermore, Riller has improved his rebounding. He averaged 8.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists compared to 2.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists for Buie. Continuing to count ties as 0.5, Buie and Knight are tied for the season lead with 2.

Maybe two players that could finish 1st team CAA Buie and Eli with Buie in the discussion for player of the year. This would be very sweet throw in winning the conference regular season and championship finally. We all can dream!!

Buie winning POY is only possible if we win the regular season title, and even then it's unlikely. Voters could say that we were picked first and that Buie was expected to score more without JWF. Pemberton on the First Team is extremely doubtful. Start with Knight, Riller, Roland, and Buie. Then add Darling because I don't see a guy who averages 20.0 and leads his team by far finishing worse than Pemberton, who averages 15.7. Lewis averages 18.7 and more points, rebounds, and assists than Pemberton. Sheffield II averages 17.5 and leads his team by a lot. Maybe Pemberton would get more vote points factoring in team quality, but it's not certain. Fobbs averages 16.0 points, but is worse than Pemberton. Pemberton is ninth in points per game, and if the top six keep playing they will get more vote points than him. There's also the question of how much voters value rebounds and assists by guys who don't score as much. There's Van Vliet with 13.7 points and 8.6 rebounds; Butler with 13.2 points and 12.0 rebounds, Wilson with 11.0 points and 10.6 rebounds; and Wynter with 15.2 points and 5.2 assists.

Edit: The fact that all of our starters average in double-digits could make it harder for anyone other than our leading scorer to get recognition. Pemberton leads the CAA among scoring among the second leading scorer on each team, but five players are the second leading scorer and more ahead of their team's fifth leading scorer than Pemberton is.

So Desure Buie has raised his game way beyond what most of us expected.
He is scoring way more than he ever did. Plays great D and makes the top team in the league team go.
If I am a coach of the other CAA teams, he has to be in strong consideration as player of the year.
The award is for this year. Rlller, the pre season pick may be banged up but his play and that of his team has dropped like a stone recently. Nathan Knight has had a great career, and the stats are impressive again, but has he been more valuable and produced a better season for William and Mary than Buie for Hofstra? The award is for this year and Buie has been the linchpin of a great regular season for his team. If you see this team all season, Buie has been Charles Jenkins- like this year. Carrying this team on his back. (Eli you have been awesome as well!)
I think he should win the player of the year.

There is no question whatsoever that Buie should be and is a legit CAA POY candidate. Plenty of good individual contributors in the CAA, but Buie is easily in the top 5 on the best team in the league.

I think POY should come down to Knight and Buie. Here's how they stack up, rankings-wise in the CAA this year:

KNIGHT

- 4th in scoring
- 8th in FG% (Kante is 1st, by the way - credit to HU's staff for doing this type of thing three times with a big, with the high FG%'s for Rok, Taylor and now Kante)
- 2nd in overall rebounding
- 1st in defensive rebounding
- 1st in blocks
- Team is in 2nd


BUIE

- 6th in scoring
- 15th in FG%
- 3rd in FT%
- 1st in assists
- 1st AST/TO ratio
- 1st in steals
- 4th in 3-pt %
- 9th in 3-pt FGM
- 2nd in minutes
- Team is in 1st

It's close, but I think this shows that Buie's overall impact is greater and that he's more deserving of being the POY.

Scoring - not much difference.
Efficiency - Knight's FG% should be higher because of his position. Can't penalize him for that, but Buie ranks high enough + his 3-pt% & 3pt FGM evens that out some.
Defense - tough to compare because of positions; both defend well and Buie's steals cancels out Knight's blocks.
Uncomparable stats - I think Buie's impact is greater with his asts and ast/to ratio than Knight's rebounding.
Intangibles - Buie's leadership, taking HU from 5-3 to 13-3 (so far) easily supersedes Knight's team starting 6-0 and being 12-5 (so far), while Buie is 2nd in minutes.

Oh and by the way My POY vote goes to Desure for what he has meant to this team and its success.

I would venture that if you ask any coach in the League they would have to admit that Desure's play has vaulted Hofstra to the top spot.

There is NO other player I would take ahead of him in the CAA.

After the steal at :05, how he smartly uses his body at :08 to shield himself from a bigger defender, to avoid a chase-down block and finish with the layup.

At :17, the sweet, shifty moves to craftily confuse and knife through the Drexel D in the paint for a smooth, yet hard-earned layup.

The POY voting could be split like the Preseason team rankings where we were picked first without the most first place votes. POY has separate voting from the First/Second/Third teams, so having most POY votes makes you POY. The POY is not guaranteed to have the most points on the First/Second/Third teams voting. I wouldn't be surprised if Buie, Riller, Knight, Roland, and Darling all get POY votes. Many fans will complain no matter who wins. W&M fans said it will be a joke if Knight doesn't win. ESPN's Mock Draft and Top 100 available players have Riller as the top player for an NCAA team outside the top eight conferences, Gonzaga, and San Diego State. He's 42nd in the Mock Draft and the only player outside those eight conferences and two teams. He's the top player outside those eight conference and two teams, and only CAA player, in the Top 100 available.

If POY voting required a majority like the Democratic primary, it might take multiple ballots because I don't know if anybody will get a majority.
