MBB Game 15 vs. Drexel on December 30, 2018 at 4:00 P.M.

Post by EvanJ »

https://gohofstra.com/news/2018/12/29/m ... agons.aspx is Hofstra's preview titled "MBB: Pride Looks To Slay Dragons."

JWF's combination of at least 25 points, at least 3 assists, a field goal percentage of at least .500, a three-point field goal percentage of at least .400, and a free throw percentage of at least .850 is something nobody has done in a complete season since at least 1992-1993.

Who will contain Troy Harper tomorrow? Although NU beat Drexel, 93-83, Harper had a career-high 28 points for the Dragons:

Probably more the question should be who's going to contain Justin then Pemberton Coburn and Buie. It was definitely raining treys yesterday and could be more of the same tomorrow then the bench comes in with Ray a respectable 3 point shooter and Trueheart capable of hitting beyond the perimeter. If they lay off Taylor he's showing he will put up a twelve footer. There r no patsies out there everyone capable of burying it so I don't think Harper really should be that big of a concern. Some of their players are going to score but will they offset our balanced attack.

      Hofstra by 14 1/2
      O/U 158 1/2
Translates to about an 87-72 Hofstra win

(or based on the 11 points Hofstra was favored by against Delaware, HU wins by 48 or 49) :D

Wags, would be nice but I'll settle for a nice 10 point W.

Yeah, I was only kidding. Though, I do think there's a good chance they win this one by 18-20 or so.

We're basically charting new territory with this team because realistically none of us are used to seeing a JAM team that actually plays defense. Looking quickly at stats for the CAA teams going into conference play we are the #1 team in a lot of statistical categories both offensively and defensively. Image that happening but statistics have a way of changing and we'll see how we fare in conference play. Certainly we have a lot to feel optimistic about and I feel confident in rolling the dice this year.

Drexel shoots field goals and threes slightly worse than Hofstra, but Drexel plays worse defense. Opponents shoot field goals .425 against Hofstra and .486 against Drexel. Opponents shoot threes .308 against Hofstra and .383 against Drexel. Drexel is at +4.8 rebounds and +2.4 assists, but they have other bad differentials. They commit 2.4 more turnovers, have 1.9 fewer blocks, and have 2.5 fewer steals.

      http://realtimerpi.com/rpi_209_Men.html expects us to win 87-67. http://sevenovertimes.com/teamsummary.p ... eamid=2275 expects us to win 84-68.

https://drexeldragons.com/news/2018/12/ ... unday.aspx is Drexel's preview titled "MEN'S BASKETBALL TRAVELS TO HOFSTRA ON SUNDAY."

https://s3.amazonaws.com/drexeldragons. ... _notes.pdf is Drexel's Game Notes. JWF is 14 points behind Chris Fouch, who had 1,744, which is the most by a Drexel player in the CAA.

http://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=237140 will have statistics. I will not be home at the beginning.

We lead 34-16. JWF has 13. All of our starters have scored more than anybody on Drexel.

Edit: We lead 47-27 at halftime, which is our largest lead. We could have scored 48 in the first half of consecutive games, but Pemberton missed a free throw to not have a 3 point play. He missed both, and JWF made 5 of 7, to have us shoot free throws .556. We shot field goals (.621) and threes (.600) better than free throws. In addition to poor free throw shooting, we have only 14 rebounds. JWF and Buie are tied for the team lead with 3. Dwyer has 2 and Taylor has 1. Here's the good stuff. JWF has 16, Pemberton has 9, Buie has 7, Taylor has 6, Coburn has 5, Ray and Dwyer have 2, and Trueheart played 2 minutes without shooting. Buie has 7 assists and 1 turnover. Hofstra has 13 points of turnovers and Drexel has none, so Hofstra has 34 points off turnovers without allowing any in their last one-and-a-half games. We have fewer fouls (6 to 9) and fewer turnovers (5 to 10). We don't have anybody with more than 1 foul. Drexel is led by James Butler with 6. Troy Harper has 5 free throws, but missed all 8 of his field goals. Alihan Demir and Camren Wynter have 4. Trevor John has 3, and he made Drexel's only 3 in 9 attempts. Drexel has only 4 assists. Hofstra has more steals, 7 to 1.

Hofstra is currently a mindboggling plus-65 over its first 60 minutes of CAAHoops basketball this year.

Pemberton scored his first 2 of the second half to go up 72-64 with 8:18 left. I'm mad the Mihalich called timeout because we have 1 left and he could waited for the under 8 timeout.

Edit: We lead 81-65 and Drexel called timeout with 4:14 left.

The new video boards weren't ready for 2019. They got frozen in time with 7:17 left, and Hofstra up, 72-65.

They're actually up 83-67 now, with 2:50 left.

Today would mark Joe's 100th win at Hofstra (he's 99-79 and 364-282 overall).

Would've ended almost identical to this, at 87-73, had Drexel not fouled with under :30 left and let Hofstra run out the clock.
But the final ends up 89-75.

All in all - a pretty good night - certainly stat-wise, especially for our starting 5.
First half was like an extension of Fridays game vs Delaware - Second half got a bit sloppy, but to the credit of HU we remained composed and won.
      ST in the Casa Bow-Wow
Like - HUSID74, you take a 10 point win and walk away - we did better then that, so....
Hoping we are catching a wave - I brought some friends (that shared tix with in the past) and they were impressed and are thinking of coming back.
JAM is putting a good product on the floor - players are playing - and I like it!!!

Very interesting that after the absolute drubbing we gave Delaware two days ago, today Delaware tops Northeastern 82 - 80.
